I just work on my game all day/play games as research. Pretty much all I'm doing. I'm relying on my nest egg to keep me while I publish something. I'm not sure what I'm going to make, but I'm sure I can make a salary in 1.5 years (then my money runs out).

There is a huge market for historical and alt history games, it's a gigantic niche with disappointing games lately and yet no indie devs taking advantage of it. Probably because the amount of content required is too much for solodevs but you can make hyperspecific niche games focused on a single era, I got filtered trying to make a grand strategy map you need to be good at shaders to make it look really good.

My game is alt history in the most literal sense, probably. When you first get into the game and it's world it appears to be exactly the same as ours but as you go through the game and if you pay attention to the background stuff, you find out more and more differences between my world and the real world. But the alt history audiences probably won't like that.

In your pic, it is correct that it is not the engineer's job to determine the vision, but very importantly *someone* still needs to determine the vision. Whether you call them a game designer or an idea guy, there needs to be an actually good vision of the end goal for the team to align around. And before you go off on the typical "but you can't actually know the end goal at the start," yeah, obviously you can change the vision at any time. The point is to maintain alignment between team members.

Design is the most difficult task in any field. For example, you said

but no actual designer is going to say that. That's ideaguy bullshit. You do absolutely need to design around static end goals. That is the foundation of design. If later on in your project, you see that you're not capable of meeting those end goals, then you need to call your previous design a failure, and redesign around better end goals. The problem is that it requires a lot of expertise and experience to know what reasonable end goals even are, and even more expertise to know what's the most effective way to get there.

The fact that agdg cares only about the aircraft and not the experience of the passenger/customer probably explains a great deal about why agdg continuously puts out basically functional games that consistently fail to capture any kind of audience.

A game is not just any kind of computer software, it is computer software that also needs to deliver an incredible experience to get customers. What the customer experiences should define the static end goal or vision.

Just like in game dev. You need engineers to build the game, but you need the game designers (aka idea guys) to tell the engineers what kind of thing to build. I spent hours trying to figure out why I couldn't make a scene transition on Godot, until I realized that it had absolutely nothing to do with not being able to do scene transitions, and the actual problem was that I accidentally deleted "extends control" on the script of a root node. Oops haha!

My local theater company is NCM and you can setup a campaign with them via their website, no phone calls. But thatโ€™s in California. I just looked up who manages ads for my local theater. My theater is dead so itโ€™s only like $300/month but theaters in bigger towns push up to 6 or 7 hundred.

Yesterday night I spend hours researching western imperialism because I was so confused why all war games were always about shooting brown people and the only antiwar shooter I can think of was spec ops the line.
Even Fallujah was turned into a pro war dogshit game. When the reality was, city was largely destroyed, Massive civilian casualties, used depleted uranium munitions, leading to increased birth defects and cancer rates, forced evacuation of most civilians, US forces treated entire population as potential enemies, Collective punishment etc.
The US troops were the terrorists lol. Yet no games pit you against them. Strange. This is what "bringing democracy" actually looked like on the ground. The US military destroyed an entire city to punish it for resistance, used chemical weapons, and left a generation of children with birth defects.

It kind of made me think of creating games based on real-history. There are very pressing themes to hit on, it's just that people are conditioned to think it to be a bad idea. But I think the new gens are waking up. Now you're finally allowed to criticize Israel in the open. Times are changing and it's only a matter of time until a studio somewhere in china makes a shooter about fighting US terrorists.

How exactly are you supposed to learn how to code games

I understand CS principles and can code basics scripts but when I look at stuff like pic related, which is a YouTuber coding a terrain generator in Unity, I get overwhelmed and wonder how are you supposed to source this knowledge from scratch

Like if I wanted to implement my own version of a terrain generator or make alterations to this one, not only would I not know where to begin, I wouldn't know where to start learning to get on the path of knowing where to begin

At the end of a turn, the cards in hand are activated - they are visible to allow you to position yourself, strategize over whats coming.
So thats weapons firing automatically in their own set ways.
Effect cards buffing the character or specific tags, weapons etc.
Other cards that spawn helpers/puppets, etc.

You control the makeup of the deck via drops and the shop. Levelling up might give you a specific currency to upgrade cards increasing their stats.

Threadly reminder that even gamedev success can be a trap.
Imagine your game earns you 10 years of income. Would you quit your job and start making games full time? If so, you'd have fallen into the same trap I did.
The crux of the trap is the time you spend as a gamedev will count against you if ever need to get a job again. And the ironic thing is the more successful you are, the more dangerous the trap will be unless you earn enough money to never need a job again.
The only way full-time gamedev would be sustainable is if your games keep earning at least a year of expenses for every year worked... until you're literally 75. And I do mean literally. When you're 72, you'll need to sit down and make a game that earns you 3 years of expenses. Anything short of that and you'll eventually run out of money. And when you do, you'd have been 10-15-20 years out of the job market and good luck getting a job with that employment gap.
When you run out of money, it can take as little as a couple of months for your life to be ruined. That's what happened to me. I found myself broke at 45 and no job for the past 15 years except making games. And I'm looking at 30 more years of having to survive. I can't get job interviews, I can't afford to keep working on games, and I'm too old to get into trades. My life is probably fucked because my first project earned me 10 years of income and I quit my job like a dumb ass.
Anyway, the point of this is to warn you: DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOBS UNLESS YOU EARNED ENOUGH MONEY TO NEVER NEED A JOB AGAIN. If my warning saves even a couple of you, it's worth it.

Average return on an investment portfolio is said to be around 10%... before capital gains tax (10-20%) and inflation (2-5%). The real returns (again, before tax) are 5.2%. And you're not going to get your game earnings as a lump sum but over months or even years. Do the math.

Don't try to use the orbital camera. I don't know what it's supposed to be for but it's sure not for third person games.

What you do is you use a cameraTarget object that's parented to the character and positioned as you want the camera. Set up the cinemachine camera to follow and look at that object and then you control that object to rotate the camera.

I've been looking into taxes for Americans.
Here's what chatgpt says on a million $ revenue:
Maryland C-Corp 21% federal = $210,000
+ 8.25% MD = $82,500 23.8% dividend on $707,500 = $168,385 $460,885 total, $539,115 take home
I think the dividend taxes would be a bit less.

I would like to tell a story but I honestly have come to realize that I think I'm just a nothing person. Imho current day is a bit what agdg likes to call "skinner box."
There is a lot of emphasis put in the card design on making them EXCITING (the current credo is F.I.R.E. and E is literally for exciting). This leads to more and more nuance getting lost. The fact, the fact actually interesting for game design, is that in the normal, original MtG design it is already "exciting" (giving dopamine) to just hit your land drop for the turn. Or playing a creature card you like / relate to. The design is incredibly genius, you are just putting cards from your hand on the table and it gives so much satisfaction.
These days they are basically doing what Americans do with food, putting sugar into everything.

Mark Rosewater, the lead designer, had a good idea about "design space" for the longest while, where he basically opposed too many new cards getting released per year, on grounds that there was only a limited amount of interesting card designs that could be done, before quality would deteriorate.
Suits seem to have "convinced" him otherwise at some point, and now many new cards have 5 and more lines of text, giving incredibly niche pay-offs on incredibly specific triggers, which is plain annoying and makes me not even look at all new cards anymore these days, itโ€™s just too exhausting to parse all that.

It can work, if your game is impressive enough tech and the right person interviews you. Iโ€™ve had a number of applications where the company seemed to treat gamedev as "worse than NEET" somehow, but at the actually good openings they were quite respectful. I like this idea very much. Some of the most fun I had in Skyrim was starting off level 1, gathering supplies like arrows. And then going off on an adventure. Like trying to make it all the way west. Camping out, getting low on supplies, crawling through the tundra at night to avoid giants or whatever. Once you fast travel or get too obsessed with finishing quests, the fun goes away. The adventure is the fun part. Sounds like your game idea replicated that to some level.

You can have big goals and quests, I was just saying, once you start rushing everything, it can become more like a chore. It's why I don't fast travel anymore. It legitimately makes the game better as you have to more carefully plan your routes.
