What does your vidya makin schedule look like? Are you self-employed? Are you able to maintain things like a partner and a pet? How do you not burn out?
I want to dev but I genuinely believe my "fans" don't deserve an update, which puts me in a conundrum.
YOOOOOOOOOO IS THAT A GAME WHERE YOU GAMBLE AND CHOOSE BETWEEN 3 THINGS? GIMME GIMME
my game is suddenly getting more downloads because all the NSFW games in the same categories have been deindexed on itch.io
>>532676070>my "fans" don't deserve an updateIt's like you're not going to go to the bathroom because the weird guy is going to sniff your farts. Just like make game. Fuck em. If they receive it well then great, otherwise who cares?

>>532676061I just work on my game all day/play games as research. Pretty much all I'm doing. I'm relying on my nest egg to keep me while I publish something. I'm not sure what I'm going to make, but I'm sure I can make a salary in 1.5 years (then my money runs out).
>>532676061I tend to get lost online for a couple hours after I wake up. Then I try to get some dev done. Productivity varies from day to day. I have to stop deving at least a few hours before sleep or else I won't be able to sleep.
>>532675771 (OP)Can you imagine walking into a room and everyone is posed like this?
There is a huge market for historical and alt history games, it's a gigantic niche with disappointing games lately and yet no indie devs taking advantage of it. Probably because the amount of content required is too much for solodevs but you can make hyperspecific niche games focused on a single era, I got filtered trying to make a grand strategy map you need to be good at shaders to make it look really good.
>>532676061I'm just built differently ;) What can I say except I'm great

What do you call an ideaguy who literally conceptualizes an entire video game down to the last detail?
>>532678169A game designer
>>532677028>There is a huge market for historical and alt history gamesMy game is alt history in the most literal sense, probably. When you first get into the game and it's world it appears to be exactly the same as ours but as you go through the game and if you pay attention to the background stuff, you find out more and more differences between my world and the real world. But the alt history audiences probably won't like that.
>>532678169That would be a game designer and not an ideaguy. The ideaguy is clueless as to the mechanisms that make a game work and are incapable of fleshing out any actually important details.
>>532677981>Ever thought of submitting a portfolio to Insomniac? No? I don't particularly consider myself an insomniac either. My brain is just very active when I'm in dev mode and it takes a couple hours to calm down.
>>532678474In your pic, it is correct that it is not the engineer's job to determine the vision, but very importantly *someone* still needs to determine the vision. Whether you call them a game designer or an idea guy, there needs to be an actually good vision of the end goal for the team to align around. And before you go off on the typical "but you can't actually know the end goal at the start," yeah, obviously you can change the vision at any time. The point is to maintain alignment between team members.
>can't get a job

>>532678773The engineer is far more capable of coming up with a reasonable vision than a retarded nodev.
>>532678927So are you saying that the engineer shouldn't have been fired in that pic?
I used AI voice acting to generate ekse.
>>532679118Well, a beginner junior with no practical experience should be put in his place. If he can be taught, then teach him, but some people refuse to learn without facing severe consequences.
Design is the most difficult task in any field. For example, you said
>"but you can't actually know the end goal at the start,"but no actual designer is going to say that. That's ideaguy bullshit. You do absolutely need to design around static end goals. That is the foundation of design. If later on in your project, you see that you're not capable of meeting those end goals, then you need to call your previous design a failure, and redesign around better end goals. The problem is that it requires a lot of expertise and experience to know what reasonable end goals even are, and even more expertise to know what's the most effective way to get there.
>>532678927Here's the thing: What's the limit for "Reasonable?"
>>532680373That should be based on what resources and constraints look like, and everyone's resources and constraints are different. Typically, you shouldn't be trying to push things to the limit. You want to stay within a range where you have high expectations for success.
>>532678608Understandable. I can get pretty excited when I dev too. Always had trouble with insomnia, but I've learned to sleep really snug. Cheers to good sleep hygiene, and good luck on your game.
>>532680093So you completely agree that there needs to be a vision? What are you trying to argue with me about exactly?
How are you going to advertise your game anon?
Where, and how much?
>>532681079Ideaguys are incapable of having a "vision". Game designers are. Ideaguys are not game designers.
>>532681283Engineer in original picture gets fired for trying to form a vision though. So doesn't that mean vision is a bad thing?
>>532681089>How are you going to advertise your game anon?I'm not. It's too much work. I can only actually make my game. Fuck advertising, whatever happens to my game, happens.
>>532681089You don't need to advertise your game, you just need to release it. If it is good it will be successful without advertising. If it fails it was a bad game and advertising would have been wasted on it.

Agdg is too pleb to make a VN eroge about Enrique VIII.
>>532681429If you read the thing, he formed a vision of an experience, not of an aircraft. Our goal here is to make real, playable video games that exist as computer software, not imaginary experiences that can only ever exist in the realm of one's mind.

A game is not just any kind of computer software, it is computer software that also needs to deliver an incredible experience to get customers. What the customer experiences should define the static end goal or vision.

Just like in game dev. You need engineers to build the game, but you need the game designers (aka idea guys) to tell the engineers what kind of thing to build. The autistic software engineers in this thread need to shut up and stop trying to do the job of the idea guys and instead listen to the idea guys.
I spent hours trying to figure out why I couldn't make a scene transition on Godot, until I realized that it had absolutely nothing to do with not being able to do scene transitions, and the actual problem was that I accidentally deleted "extends control" on the script of a root node. Oops haha!

>>532677028>>532686260Yesterday night I spend hours researching western imperialism because I was so confused why all war games were always about shooting brown people and the only antiwar shooter I can think of was spec ops the line.
Even Fallujah was turned into a pro war dogshit game. When the reality was, city was largely destroyed, Massive civilian casualties, used depleted uranium munitions, leading to increased birth defects and cancer rates, forced evacuation of most civilians, US forces treated entire population as potential enemies, Collective punishment etc.
The US troops were the terrorists lol. Yet no games pit you against them. Strange. This is what "bringing democracy" actually looked like on the ground. The US military destroyed an entire city to punish it for resistance, used chemical weapons, and left a generation of children with birth defects.
It kind of made me think of creating games based on real-history. There are very pressing themes to hit on, it's just that people are conditioned to think it to be a bad idea. But I think the new gens are waking up. Now you're finally allowed to criticize Israel in the open. Times are changing and it's only a matter of time until a studio somewhere in china makes a shooter about fighting US terrorists.

How exactly are you supposed to learn how to code games
I understand CS principles and can code basics scripts but when I look at stuff like pic related, which is a YouTuber coding a terrain generator in Unity, I get overwhelmed and wonder how are you supposed to source this knowledge from scratch
Like if I wanted to implement my own version of a terrain generator or make alterations to this one, not only would I not know where to begin, I wouldn't know where to start learning to get on the path of knowing where to begin
Are there any courses that would bring me up to speed on how to think when programming in C# for Unity

There's thousand books, films and documentaries haven't already combed over how war is le bad and america did le bad things in le wars. >>532687874Lots of people get to theaters way too early and many bring family. Viewership is low but super memorable. In a theater, the few people there are forced to watch your ad on a giant screen. Every shooter in existence is exploring this "shit", just from a POV that has been programmed into your fucking brain since birth.
It had not been done and the only other example is the game that anon above has posted about which is just a role reversal, which makes for a boring game.
>>532689061I do, I can sort of glean what the code does as well, but if you asked me to implement any of it I'd be stumped on where to begin even in pseudocode let alone actual code, and that's just a tiny bit of part ~7 out of 15 so it's not even close to the full generator
I guess I could eventually come up with the pseudocode on my own given enough time and trial and error, but again, knowing how to code it, knowing how to store something, in what, and why, how to process the data to achieve a goal, knowing what tools I have at my disposal, if something will work or not etc stumps me
For example while watching the video I noticed the guy just pulls out the bounds property without ever mentioning it before and I realized there's tons of shit under the hood I'd need to familiarize myself with to avoid wasting time reinventing the wheel for stuff that's already built in
>>532689336ChatGPT can help for individual bits and pieces but I'm looking for something that would let me familiarize myself with actually working at increasing levels of complexity in a structured way so I don't have gaps in my knowledge
>>532690104I guess you could rephrase my question as "how do I go from making a simple game to making more complex ones", because making a 2D platformer didn't help me understand how to make a 3D terrain generator from scratch, that feels like a wholly separate thing that doesn't have simpler versions that you can use to ease yourself in

But no matter which way it is, few or many, itโs either an underserved market or a healthy one. In both cases it doesnโt seem like a terrible idea to make a game in the space. Itโll certainly be more interesting and noteworthy than another generic fantasy or sci fi experience.
>>532691992>There are also plenty of reasonably "visionary" games that are GMI if they can ever be completed (they can't due to being way overscoped).Genuinely curious as to which ones actually have a decent vision
>>532692132Well now that you've thought about hypothetically making a game, you can relax satisfied in the feeling that you accomplished something, and can continue being a nodev with no game.

>>532692318Well imagine if instead of a piece of paper you threw yourself into the ocean, then when you get rescued or wash up on some shore you can tell people about your game. Think about it! What a great idea.

The Kill Team is a small indie film that most people never heard of. Box office: $290k. Compare that to Top Gun: Maverick's $1.4 billion.
Jarhead, is about soldier boredom and PTSD, not about America being wrong to invade. The message is "war is psychologically hard" not "imperial intervention is evil."
Stop-Loss is, again, about how the system hurts American soldiers, not about how America destroys other countries. Still centers American suffering.
Generation Kill, a miniseries that shows some military criticism but mainly shows Marines as competent.

Threadly reminder that even gamedev success can be a trap.
Imagine your game earns you 10 years of income. Would you quit your job and start making games full time? If so, you'd have fallen into the same trap I did.
The crux of the trap is the time you spend as a gamedev will count against you if ever need to get a job again. And the ironic thing is the more successful you are, the more dangerous the trap will be unless you earn enough money to never need a job again.
The only way full-time gamedev would be sustainable is if your games keep earning at least a year of expenses for every year worked... until you're literally 75. And I do mean literally. When you're 72, you'll need to sit down and make a game that earns you 3 years of expenses. Anything short of that and you'll eventually run out of money. And when you do, you'd have been 10-15-20 years out of the job market and good luck getting a job with that employment gap.
When you run out of money, it can take as little as a couple of months for your life to be ruined. That's what happened to me. I found myself broke at 45 and no job for the past 15 years except making games. And I'm looking at 30 more years of having to survive. I can't get job interviews, I can't afford to keep working on games, and I'm too old to get into trades. My life is probably fucked because my first project earned me 10 years of income and I quit my job like a dumb ass.
Anyway, the point of this is to warn you: DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOBS UNLESS YOU EARNED ENOUGH MONEY TO NEVER NEED A JOB AGAIN. If my warning saves even a couple of you, it's worth it.
>but why didn't you invest your money and live off your investments you idiot?
Average return on an investment portfolio is said to be around 10%... before capital gains tax (10-20%) and inflation (2-5%). The real returns (again, before tax) are 5.2%. And you're not going to get your game earnings as a lump sum but over months or even years. Do the math.

+ 8.25% MD = $82,500 23.8% dividend on $707,500 = $168,385 $460,885 total, $539,115 take home
I think the dividend taxes would be a bit less.
Ireland Corp (CFC) 12.5% corporate = $125,000 โ GILTI = ~$5,000 (after FTC) $130,000 total, $870,000 take home
Puerto Rico Act 60 4% corporate = $40,000 $15,000 required costs 4% dividend on $945,000 = $37,800 $92,800 total, $907,200 take home
Something to note: For a CFC(controlled foreign corporation) you need an office and employees in the country of incorporation and you cannot perform duties from inside the US, you might need to only work in the country of incorporation, I can't remember.
Also to note, for Puerto Rico Act 60 company, you must stay there 3 years 183 days of the year at least, can't spend more than 120 days in the US (not sure how long you can stay, needs more research), also you need to buy a house in puerto rico within two years. If you make over 3 million you also need a full time employee who is a Puerto Rican resident.
>If I ever stop being a nodev and have a successful kickstarter and move to puerto rico, would any of you have interest in forming an AGDG community over there. What if I payed you 30k per year to work on your own game and I take a small cut of the revenue?

AI on the other hand is just getting started. the only thing keeping 80% humans in employment is the taboo of replacing them with machines. cars and trucks can already drive better and safer than humans can. there's less hesitation in replacing human artists and other creatives because it won't result in disasters, but make no mistake, it will eat every human job in the end.

Looking at the complete evolution of MtG can teach a lot. Just gonna take a huge amount of time.

What data pattern do I use for UI?
>>532745572>How is it in the current day?Imho current day is a bit what agdg likes to call "skinner box."
There is a lot of emphasis put in the card design on making them EXCITING (the current credo is F.I.R.E. and E is literally for exciting). This leads to more and more nuance getting lost. The fact, the fact actually interesting for game design, is that in the normal, original MtG design it is already "exciting" (giving dopamine) to just hit your land drop for the turn. Or playing a creature card you like / relate to. The design is incredibly genius, you are just putting cards from your hand on the table and it gives so much satisfaction.
These days they are basically doing what Americans do with food, putting sugar into everything.
>food analogySugar becomes more enjoyable the less you have of it. Coating everything in Sugar makes MtG boring.

AI seething has 2 levels from what I can see, one is delusional artists who think they're losing something that was never theirs to beging with and the other is people who thought that they were held back by lacking technical means to make something but then realized that they're just not creatives.
AI is the way to leave corporate slavery but some people only know that.

Good morning anons! Post your progress:
>>532747318you can use whatever sprites you want
>>532745572>>532746842Oh and another thing. Mark Rosewater, the lead designer, had a good idea about "design space" for the longest while, where he basically opposed too many new cards getting released per year, on grounds that there was only a limited amount of interesting card designs that could be done, before quality would deteriorate.
Suits seem to have "convinced" him otherwise at some point, and now many new cards have 5 and more lines of text, giving incredibly niche pay-offs on incredibly specific triggers, which is plain annoying and makes me not even look at all new cards anymore these days, itโs just too exhausting to parse all that.
If my game flops, my plan B is to use my game's incredibly impressive code as leverage when finding gamedev job positions.
>>532748079Ayooo
>>532748676It can work, if your game is impressive enough tech and the right person interviews you. Iโve had a number of applications where the company seemed to treat gamedev as "worse than NEET" somehow, but at the actually good openings they were quite respectful.
