TFH is a special case where they dropped the the ball hard and fumbled all their momentum in a few key ways.
1. They insisted on doing all the labor intensive full animation by themselves. They didn't want to hire more people, even after they got their publishing deal and wanted to do complex bouncy disney animation with custom supers and custom hit interactions for every character on every matchup. This made them take a year to release one DLC character. As such, they lost steam from people getting tired of waiting.

2. Their publishing deal kind of screwed them. If I recall correctly, the publishers are why they had to delay the story DLC, which was originally supposed to come out first. So all the casuals that were invested in the story that Lauren Faust wrote for the team got angry, thus all the negative reviews they got later on.

3. They tried to make it into an esport despite it having a tiny scene. They focused all their effort onto that and getting the new characters out for tournaments... while also still refusing to take on people to help them speed up the process.

The game also was just kind of not engaging for people with all the huge ground bounce wall bounce dio timestop combos on every hit even in real matches, so it didn't stick out enough in people's minds.

It was unironically too weird for the FGC, but also too hard for the casual bronies. If it was closer to something like Fantasy Strike, I imagine it would have actually been way bigger since it could at least get bronies to get into it and play it even if they were not already expert level fighting game players that wanted to learn a 40 hit BnB.

And now because the publisher, they're not even allowed to work on it because they signed a contract that gave up all their rights for more money.

The only reason stick is so popular here is because the games were designed with stick in mind plus legacy skills of people who actually played in arcades.
Modern games like sf6 and t8 are designed with the pad as their main type of controller.

If you want an easy type of control, use leverless.
