I think Canto 5 is one of the better ones for being relatively straightforward. I know people like to praise canto 4 but once they enter the dungeon the writing turns to gobbledygook.

I disagree. We've already seen them with ostensibly no restrictions so adding restrictions in the future doesn't fix the issues caused in the earlier cantos. Even if some restrictions were mentioned it would have added to their mystery and made players think about what they mean, Chekhov's gun, etc. Finding out about restrictions as said restrictions come into play is cheap writing and a sign that someone is writing things as they go along, especially when it comes to something like the golden boughs.

I think the suckiness of the EGOs fit since they are basically store rentals that are imposed on the sinners (except WAWs, so far they have been great imo). Unfortunately cycling them just is a terrible idea unless you want to heal them or want to really buff up Hong Lu with his combo attacks, if we ever get battles long enough for that.
Losing the statuses from EGO passives, poise, and strider just is not worth it. All the heishoi S3s hit like a wet noodle without their conditionals and they NEED their strider for that.
At best, the retreat and reinforce mechanics are only for if you want to not have the obligatory every heishou uses their defensive skill turn 1 because their S3 gives it too them too.
