yes, hajimari worked because it was a bridge/gaiden game. routes worked because there were no side-quests and everyone had more or a less the same pacing and length, routes also interconnect at certain points
and of course true reverie corridor was fun because it offered nice rewards and it was only introduced in hajimari so it felt fresh and a nice way to enjoy the combat

calvard's problem is that it doesn't have an overworld maps where you can travel to each town and fight mobs, falcom went for an easy route and made marchen and then grim sharten to compensate for the lack of explorable areas since we have a lot of playable characters and you need to use them somewhere
routes unironically killed the pacing, it's clear that kai is kuro 3, the story is clearly centered around calvard and its characters, so kevin having an entire plotline dedicated to the characters who are related/close to the main cast was cheap, rean is an outlier and more of a fanservice which basically screams "rean is back, please buy our game, pretty please!" which was also cheap and disgusting.

I hate the Gardenshit so much. It interrupts the pacing of the games, the layouts are somehow even more dull than the levels they design themselves (and that's an accomplishment), the vr shit is cringe and the way they handwaive explain it all away is even more cringe and lazy. None of the visuals are interesting, it's all just generic floating island garbage. There isn't really anything interesting tied to it either. Even in Kai the best you get is just a bunch of sequelbait in a game already full of sequelbait anyway.

It just feels like such a convenient cheat. Falcom are too lazy and don't want to design an actual world anymore and they want to have routes with 800 different characters so they just create this magic hack alternate reality that they can fill with palette swap enemies and randomly generated slop fields to mindlessly run through. It all feels so contrived and "video game"-y and unimmersive and it just takes me out of it. It's an RPG man it's supposed to feel immersive but they just don't even care.

To be fair this crap started all the way back in 3rd but at least 3rd and Hajimari are just fanservice games and not the main storylines. Now it's in every game and it's just exhausting. It's just the epitome of bland filler and it's basically replaced the actual world of the games. I wanted to explore Calvard in the Calvard arc, not explore virtual reality bullshit.

Calvard is not Erebonia, it's a very plain and samey country mostly made up of farming lands
It doesn't even have any mountain ranges outside of its borders and no large rivers or lakes, even the weather is just samey as there's no snowy areas
Love or hate it the Garten is the only way to introduce varied and fun fields to explore

Kai really is frankestein of a game with no direction, they basically came up with the ending first and then had to fill all the gaps with a bunch of shit. Kondo basically confirmed that when he said that routes weren't planned and ouroboros wasn't originally planned to be involved in the story at all, but they had to speed up the story so they put them into grim sharten instead.

It tries way too hard to please everybody yet it also doesn't really properly commit to anything because any time the game is about to get even remotely interesting they immediately pump the breaks because they want to save it for the next game and after 2 games in a row of them doing that already it's just gotten so fucking old. Everything in Kai build ups to the ending and in a normal jrpg that would be the first 10 hours of the story with the real meat being after that. But falcom would rather split the game again and fill it with a bunch of filler to justify the price tag since Kondom for some reason believes that games should be pretty long to justify the full price.

The problem with Calvard is that they are just bad games. Way too much filler, none of the cast is fleshed out. There are no "stakes" because the plots have been so throw away and pathetic that it's hard to even care about what they throw you next. All of Calvard has just felt like a side filler game where side characters get way more front and center than the main cast. The predictable flow chart of how every chapter functions is just tiring at this point. You can say that Cold Steel 3 and 4 were super padded and dragged out a lot of what makes modern Kiseki bad but it atleast had an engaging plot with actual stakes. There were actual real villains established very early on and you had a real idea of what you were actually fighting against.

Also I don't care what anybody else says, the finale of CS3 and the giant cliffhanger going into CS4 was the highest moment of the series. Falcom did such a good job at establishing the grand finale but here we are 3 games into Calvard and what exactly are Van and friends doing?

At the end of the day Calvard is ok. It's a wasted potential, I think Kuro 1 was great and one of my favourite first game in the arc after FC, but falcom fumbled hard with Kuro 2 and Kai. They can somewhat salvage the perception if Kai 2 will be a great payoff with the highest highs the series can offer, but the damage was already done. I think falcom should finish the series soon and move on, they're clearly out of steam when it comes to kiseki. Writing this for 20 years wih no clear goal took its toll.

Crossbell was good because it was 2 games (before hajimari) and had pretty decent pacing. Azure was a rollercoaster of high stake events happening back to back right up until the finale. The writing itself may not have been interesting but it moved fast and told an entertaining story. The first 2 Crossbell games will always be high up there for me simply because it's a very entertaining duology that fit in very nicely after the events of sky.
