Imagine being forced to listen to Aogami try to understand how to be human through all of CoV, to the point where he has to ask you stupid questions or make dumb anecdotes in every other scene, and after all that declares he just gets it now and knows who he is, how he feels, and all his characters flaws are now fixed due to an unrelated chance occurrence sacrifice that you accidentally saved him from.
I can't believe they thought this rush job was a good idea. It wasn't like Aogami's character arc was a minor thing on the side. He talks about it almost as much as Tao and Yoko stop you with alignment dilemmas and their character arcs weren't left unfinished in either ending. And he got a bench about it too! It's fucking bizarre.

I don't know about all that, but Vengeance remains a masterpiece.

Vengeance is unironically one of the worst SMT games I have played.

Having checked the dialogue for it, it is their soul but the brainwashing is so heavy that the resurrected goddess is basically a homunculus. It’s kind of like Flynn’s situation in that sense, and would fit with the edgy sense of the route. Bring someone back (like Asahi) but she’s brainwashed into just being your lover, with the original personality just gone. This design doesn't mesh well with Kaneko's asian demons. It's too colorful and overly complex, which go against how Kaneko designs his demons and his female assistant coloring them. Honestly I'm not sure. Narratively and aesthetically I don't think anything comes close to the classic games, but with very few exceptions (looking at you Smirk) pretty much every innovation newer games have made has been good. Affinity, haunts, press turns, magatsuhi and command skills, simplified fusion and skill inheritance mechanics, innate abilities, getting rid of magnetite, apps, all these things we take for granted are all post 2000s additions to the games, and I'll freely admit it's hard sometimes going back to games without them. I certainly wouldn't want the games to stop taking risks and innovating, even if I'm not as enthusiastic about some of the modern writing.

Being brutally honest I want it to die entirely. SMT was a product of an era that no longer exists. Its a corpse being dragged around, unable to rest in peace. As a game I enjoyed Vengeance, sure, it has some of their most refined combat yet, but ultimately its hollow to the core and doesn't know what it wants to be. Atlus used to be such an experimental company, but when was the last time they did something that wasn't directly based off Megaten or lets be real, Persona 5? Look at how "original" Metaphor ended up, how much SMTV fellates Nocturne and some of the older games.
Not even Kaneko could escape it - Tsukuyomi is him aping aspects of SMT, now with the power of AI, and it was an utter face.

I think it's very telling that the original idea for V - that is to say, a game that would be focusing on real-world issues like social unrest, anxiety, and paranoia - was abandoned in favor of a game that's largely a whole plot reference to Nocturne with an updated re-release that wholesale references Strange Journey. The making of documentary for Nocturne is required viewing for anyone posting here. It says so much about the very specific worldview that made SMT work - and how that worldview was very much of a specific era.

The biggest issue that SMT has right now is the compulsion to constantly reference and fellate the old games. Everything about the design philosophy and production pipeline has changed, but the games are still forced to contort themselves around grandfathered in concepts. Nocturne, in it's time, was effectively a soft reboot for the series, making radical changes to gameplay, mechanics, and unshackling the franchise from the 199X storyline and the established tropes and factions that audiences had come to expect. After 23 years, I think it's time for another reboot.

I feel Metaphor only got a manga since Hashino was behind it. There is some evidence they didn't believe base V would be worth doing with the investment. This is the same company that makes smaller mangas like the Maken X one for promotions for something they outsourced to not be in USA for localization and they worked with a third party publisher for Europe instead of Atlus West themselves.

Maybe there's some bad blood behind the scenes or a lack of confidence in the product, and due to the troubled development that made Atlus assume it wouldn't be worth investing in. I'm just interested if they're willing to actually evolve for SMT. Metaphor was insanely safe for what it was and I really didn't really like it was. I don't really get the "V is just a massive reference to nocturne", granted the last time I played 3 was more than decade ago so its very likely most references went over my head. The only thing that I got that it was a reference or a reused concept was the reasons and the demifiends/nahobinos but it didn't really feel like memberberries to me and more that it's essentially the same setting. Komori wanted more Susano-o myth present in the story as well. I can only imagine the fear of spoilers combined with Doi saying he'll talk about VV again later and it being over a year since means they are probably working on V again. It really can't mean anything else at this point because interviews don't take this long and neither does an art book. But if it is due to it taking this long to produce an art book, then I'd be concerned over how long production time seems to be over there because god damn.

If that were true that means mainline is being held back from all production in general and the teams have been scattered about to work on other games. Last i checked the RetroArch version of Citra is OpenGL only so it has the fixed death animations and doesn't render shadows at all but the bloom blur is still there, one easy way to check the shadows and bloom issues is in front of the indian guy selling stuff in central Ueno, the shadows should be rendering weirdly all over the place and at a high internal resolution the game will actually be blurrier than 1x since the bloom isn't scaling properly (in other games with the same problem like Zelda Twilight Princess and Fire Emblem Fates people made cheats to disable the bloom or make it scale higher but there's no such thing for SMT IV yet)

Because open world isn't good game design. It always has the player go through a empty field where there's nothing to do besides the occasional monster, treasure chest, or some trinket to artificially pad the game out. It also encourages the developers to not put much effort into having memorable locations, since they need to make sure that it can be on the field without chugging the framerate or outright crashing.

Just finished the Amami Monolith dungeon. Some of the dungeons in this game have been pretty good, but that shit was a slog. There are tons of hallways that lead nowhere, needlessly long and nonsensical twists and turns, empty rooms without treasure, and even a few chests with nothing in them. The pair of bosses were cool, but probably should have been spaced out more so that there was a boss closer to the midpoint and one at the end.
They had some kind of idea going with the passcode panels, but I can't help but feel there must be a more elegant way they could have done it.

What I talked about is still in that picture, the entire mansion and Raidou's model are upgrades. But despite it almost being a remake, it explicitly isn't advertised as such and its probably because they're using old NPC/demon models and it was said at some point that they were working with the original code instead of completely starting from scratch.
