There have been other artists doing supplementary and promotional art for a long time now. What I'm curious about is the Princess of Cannock's new design; since it seems like there were always plans to remake 1 & 2 after 3 (I think Horii mentioned that at the initial reveal 700 years ago), was that a design Toriyama himself did in advance?

Anonymous No.542703921 [Report]
I usually think it's lame to let "canon" determine your choices in a game, but when it comes to names I usually just go with the official one if there's nothing else I can customize about the character. Unless it's Pokemon or something where even when it had set designs for the protagonists the character's name is more of a "team name" for multiplayer than anything.

If there isn't an NES monster location, name table, and exp/gold rate that is EXACTLY the same as the NES Dragon Quest 1, then the game will suck.
I just played the mobile version and it seems like slop.
One shooting scorpions with sizz? Are you fucking kidding me? Where is the resource management?
I had enough gold walking around in the dark cave to buy a hand axe and rhe large shield. I didn't have to do 8 dives for it and flee from every monster on the 2md floor.

did co-op until i got enough copies of the slime army memory to upgrade it to s-rank
thoughts on it so far are mixed. if everyone has a good connection and everything runs smooth it's good, because you can easily dodge the incoming aoe attacks and counter properly...
but if the connection is shit and everything lags, it's borderline unplayable. it just becomes attack and heal back up with the heal slime cdg heal

would probably also need a proper lobby system like in stars that allows you to kick people if they're underleveled or undergeared.

love that stamps are back, though, those were half the fun in stars' co-op

also i hope they make this (or at least +150%) the standard movement speed. this stage felt sooo good to play after the slogfest that were almost all the other stages.
Anonymous No.542745134 [Report]
also, when it comes to "generosity", the game hands you shittons of tickets and gems to roll shit on.
just the slime event alone handed me like 15 multis in tickets, then a couple more tickets from the tact-like battle pass, one extra infinity reroll ticket, and shittons of gems for another 5 multis or so, and there's still 13000 gems I can get from the cbt missions

the only worry is that they'll change this once the game is live. you'd just have to hope that the minimum amount of tickets they hand out is always 10, not 1, so you still get 1/10 of a multi per ticket package, like you used to get in tact.
Anonymous No.542746001 [Report]
what's also annoying is picrel
for the vocation skill trees you need s-rank memories, and you can only get these from ranking them up afaik
you need 3 copies of the same rank to rank them to the next higher rank (3xD -> C, 3x C -> B, 3xB -> A, 3xA -> S)
there's no speed up button, characters move super slow, and auto-battle sometimes just stops working, so if you want to max out the vocation skill trees, you have to play through these slow and longer stages over and over again
maybe skip tickets haven't been implemented yet and stuff, but this is too much. you'd have to spend weeks grinding that shit. they better start paying me to play to this if they want me to grind all day everyday just so i can level a vocation's skill tree

After watching the glitchless speedrun strategy it's like DQ1 is a resource management game.
When I was a kid I never did the dark cave because I didn't understand the point. I knew the fighter's ring was in there but I also knew that all the monsters on the 2nd floor are hardcore. There's fucking wizards down there.
But now it's interesting. Diving for gold to upgrade my equipment and hoping for the death necklace to sell.
Fight the monsters on floor 1 for gold and exp and run from everything on the 2nd floor until level 7 and the large shield. Then you can fight skeletons and drolls.

i think so, but i also enjoyed heroes and infinity strash.
like in stars you have 3 blank slate characters you have to roll equipment for. in addition to equipment there are also memories that give extra stats and additional effects, like increased resistant or damage against certain elements or monster families. some high-tier ones also give you blessings or other gameplay changers, like the king slime memory that allows staff users to pierce enemies

the gameplay itself is pretty simple, you enter a stage, you defeat enemies, you get exp, fill the exp bar, and every time you fill the exp bar, you get a blessing, a buff that stays until the end of the stage.
some mobs use larger attacks that are a little harder to avoid, but they're shown in the typical red area danger zones like in any other action or MMO game.

here's some gameplay that shows me going through the flame shrine. shortened it a bit so it'd fit here, but you should get an idea how the game is from it.

Horii has said there's no split timeline in XI, for whatever that's worth. I think Serenica was only a spirit after being reverted to human form and she went back in time to reunite with Erdwin in the afterlife, which would also explain how Serena and Veronica even exist. The only comment any character makes is "I hope she finds him", no worries about causality or whatever.

the round s-circles are for s-rank memories, which means their effects are only enabled if you put a s-rank memory into those
to get s-rank memories you either have to be lucky or farm them. idk what to compare it to other than tact's free character/monster farming. but instead of only having to max out 1 monster, you have to max out 8 of those for one vocation on a character. each vocation is a different color, so you can't just use the same 8 over and over again

I don’t think the picture points one way or another, but Horii himself said there’s only one timeline and it converged with the old, which is why the party members start having Deja vu/remember bits Act 2. My thought was that Serenica going back and defeating Calasmos in the past could cause a similar phenomenon, where it’s still one timeline that still holds some memories of the original. Which explains why no one in DQ1-3 has any knowledge of the Luminary. They think he’s just a fairy tale. Ultimately I don’t think Horii ever intends to give a 100% clear answer.

Sorry, had to gather my thoughts for a bit. I’d say it’s fun, but with a big asterisk.

At first, I tried to see how far I could get without summoning anything, since that’s just how I play gachas. I don’t spend money, so I like testing how far I can go using only farmables. That worked fine through Chapter 1, but once Events opened up, it became obvious you have to summon, otherwise you’ll just get one-shot or time out.
So after I realized there is no farmable gear, I gave in, decided on Martial Artist as my main, summoned, and built my team around that.
Once I pulled some 3 gear from tickets (Crystal Claws, Queen’s Whip, Shiverstick, etc.), the game opened up a bit. The stat gap between 2 and 3 is pretty big, especially when it comes to additional effects, but that’s expected in gachas. Still, it’d be nice if there was some farmable Event gear so unlucky players don’t get boxed out completely.
Midgame was okay. When you’re properly geared and not getting erased in two hits, combat feels fast and satisfying. A mobile version of Infinity Strash, basically.
But the “endgame” (Nightmare bosses and Gauntlets) is where the cracks start to show. Enemies spam adds that flood the screen, the auto-aim constantly screws you (AoEs always locking onto nearest enemies), and the dash mechanic straight-up breaks once your speed gets too high.
My guess is they made dashing a Battle Animation and forgot to add a “must travel X distance before the animation can end” check. Since higher Battle Speed shortens animation durations, it basically cancels your dash instantly. So instead of zipping across the field, you just stutter in place, dashing one inch at a time.
Giving me the option to opt out of auto-aim and fixing dashing would be a godsend.

Then there's the Monster Memory grind. Drop rates are painfully low, and you need absurd amounts of them for Skill Tree unlocks. 8 per vocation per character, across 5 vocations. The rank-up system (3×D = C, 3×C = B, etc.) is just pure bloat. Combine that with the “unique memory” restriction and color/family matching, and it turns into a full-time job.
For example, my Martial Artist has a Slime Knight Memory equipped, so I can't use another Slime Knight Memory for the Skill Tree. I'd need a completely different red 50+ cost S-rank Slime-type memory, which doesn't even exist yet.

And the worst part? Everything takes forever. Training stages last a full minute and drop almost nothing, so upgrading a single weapon takes 4-5 runs. Do that across three characters, and you're spending 25+ minutes just grinding basic materials. You'll stockpile stuff eventually, sure, but right now it's just painfully slow. Doubling the drop amounts would fix half the problem.

Co-op's just as bad. It didn't count my earlier runs, and now it wants me to do 25 more. That's 25 x 7 minutes, not counting the 'finding a party' screen. Since Co-op's only open for an hour and then closed for an hour, I'd need like 6 hours straight to finish the mission. And that assumes no bugs or crashes. I'm not doing that, I got shit to do. kek

Gauntlet mode could be a highlight; it's actually fun when you roll the right Blessings. Big numbers good basically. But since only three of them (Magnifier, Flurry, Scatter, not including Gauntlet-specific ones) are really worth anything, most runs feel doomed halfway through. Out of ~50 runs, I maybe got a good combo 7 times. Not the end of the world, but it's annoying to not be able to PB simply because the Blessings fucked you over.

So yeah, the core gameplay loop is fun when it works. It just gets buried under grind, RNG, and design quirks that make it hard to enjoy consistently.

>The wisdom stat's maximum influence on attack spell power was raised from +30% to +60% and also increases the damage range by the same amount. For example the Zapple spell has a base power 80 and range of 10, with high Wisdom now raising the base power to 128 and the range to 16.
So that explains why magic feels so strong in DQ3HD compared to other games.

>Then there's the Monster Memory grind
This is what's sapping the fun out of the beta for me. I wanted to do all of the feat sheet things but 10 S-ranks is far, far too much. I'm only halfway there and if I also have to somehow do 25 co-op missions in one day then I'm kind of over it. I beat the robot, so as far as I'm concerned I "beat" the beta.

You can press the auto-mode button and let characters fight by themselves, but the AI is retarded and sometimes just stops working, so you have to be there to reset it.
And no, you can't automatically let it play multiple stages. You can only skip 5 stages per day, and that's it, no skip tickets, speed ups, or auto-restart buttons. You always end up back in the stage select after you're done with a stage.
A regular stage takes around 3 minutes, harder ones around 5, Co-Op and Endgame stages around 7 to 10.

Midenhall - physical offense specialist, no magic damage at all without relying on specialist weaponry
Cannock M - hybrid attacker with an emphasis on magic. his spell list will be support oriented given that he got kazing in the original game and we know that he has access to fire magic (sizz line) and zap (trailers).
Cannock F - as you said, she's likely to get all of the abilities that dont neatly fit the others like Hustle Dance and Kerplunk Dance. If she has any magic, it'll be pretty limited given that we already have two full fledged magicians.
Mookbrooke - the team magic expert and will likely get a lot of the high end spells. For offensive magic, she already gets woosh and boom in the original and potentially crack if cannock f doesnt learn it. Because she was "dogged", i think this is where nose for treasure and snoop will go.

The only thing wife choice affects for the kids is hair color, but I think different move pools would be cool in a remake.

Bianca with Ranger abilities and Debora with Gadabout/Superstar ones are pretty obvious (I wouldn't even mind her being a Torneko-like turn waster) but Thief for Nera is a little weird. I always thought she should get Summon/That Special Summon and other Druid-y abilities to give her a magic niche that isn't covered by the hero or daughter.

That makes sense. I wouldn't want it limited to just Thief skills, but I think having a couple would make for a bit of cute characterization. When you marry Nera, her party chat reveals her sillier/more rambunctious side. Thief abilities kind of fit that, but I imagine there would be plenty of other ways to showcase that too.

I thought it also lightly adjusted their stats (leaning into magic for Nera, strength for Debora, and Bianca being more balanced).

I got the 3 HD2D remake on sale. It genuinely feels like a fan project.
I also love how they could add voice acting, flashbacks, quest markers, a minimap, balance changes (typically for the worse) and character creation, but apparently character animations in battle (on the 5th iteration of the game) is where they draw the line. Of course you can't criticize this anywhere as fans will harp on you for how "faithful" the remake is, despite the aforementioned changes. It all feels so lame. I just want 12.

I don't either, but I think it's good that Dragon Quest gets steady releases and has something to keep it in people's minds, instead of there being nothing but radio silence or Jap-only updates for years. It sucks that it's just this worthless HD-2D or gacha slop, but it's better than nothing, I guess.

Well it's definitely not as long as FFXIV's story, not even close but the structure is the same. To me I felt like I was playing a regular, single player DQ game the entire time. The most MMO thing about playing through the story is instead of party members in a regular DQ game you go to the inn and you borrow NPC versions of other people's characters as your party members.

Wouldn’t be surprised if nowadays he’s the kind of guy who only plays a game once in a blue moon though. “Middle aged Japanese guys who basically just play DQ when it comes out (maybe Monster Hunter if they’re on the younger side of middle aged)” aren’t just a meme, they’re really out there.
