• Veterans just shrug their shoulders and leave everything to the hands of teenagers
• Terrorists and mass murders get a pass because they're the MC's friend or a cute girl.
• Jumps the technology level of the verse straight into another genre
• Entire plot of the game is running around the country until something happens, do sidequests, repeat until the plot finally rolls around
• Zero stakes whatsoever.
• Several terrorist attacks happen without anybody dying. The MASS MURDERS are extremely bad at murdering people.
• The previous main villain of the game is actually revealed to be mind-controlled by another villain this entire time.
• Complex political problems are reduced to "defeat god"
• New Villain has a complex world view brought upon by decades of experience and tragedies which is answered by the MC saying "friendship good your bad because your bad"
• It's revealed the new main villain actually has been mind-controlling Erebonia to commit atrocities this entire time and nothing was Erebonia's fault.

Special Support Section leader Lloyd Bannings, and the rest of the SSS will make their appearance in Kai 2 after the player kicks a boss ass, but it turns out the boss was HOLDING BACK during the whole fight, just when they're about to unleash their full power on Van, Rean, Kevin and crew, Lloyd will cancel it with a well timed "NOT SO FAST" and TIGER CHARGE while the SSS pelt the boss normal attacks, after this, Van and company will thank Lloyd for the assist, and gear up for the REAL boss fight this time, after the player trounces the boss, Van, Rean, Kevin and company will all put their weapons away, and each take a turn thanking Lloyd and the SSS for their help, again, after they leave the boss area, the game will fade into Van and company's base of operations, where they will each proceed to thank Lloyd and the SSS for their help, for the second time.
Also, the rest of the Sky trilogy cast will be in the game purely as backup for the final dungeon, they won't really be doing anything of note for 90% of the game.

Unlike the Daybreak games, Horizon has a multiple protagonist scheme like Trails into Reverie. Besides Van Arkride from Daybreak, we also get to see the perspectives of Cold Steel protagonist Rean Schwarzer and Kevin Graham from Sky the 3rd. Why were those three characters picked?
There are mainly two reasons. The first reason is from the story’s perspective: the game would be huge if it had been a single route game, and we had Van meeting Rean or Kevin, talking to them and continuing the story, while still having to tell the whole story. It’d be even bigger than it is right now, so some of it is just the logistics of how to tell the story: because so much information and storytelling had to be put into this game, we needed a way to depict it all without it becoming gigantic.

As you pointed out in your question, there was a way to do it, which was what you saw in Trails into Reverie. It was this idea that you could have three stories going on at the same time and then occasionally crossing but still going forward to the “finish line” without taking up too much time. This was what we used as a reference when coming up with this game, and it allowed us to tell the story we wanted while hitting all the story beats we needed to hit.

Kuro no Kiseki Final Chapter: This game will be dedicated entirely to going back through the events of Kuro 1 and 2 to change history and save Agnes.
Van's Final Episode: Starting from the beginning of Kai, this is the endgame of the main Calvard arc. It ends with Van joining with Vagrants and fucking off after the cube is defeated. Finally it then ends with
Trails Towards the End: The main plot of Calvard is over, but Van needs to be saved. It's the game that will act as the connection linking Calvard with the final arc (or at least it'll seem like it).

This arc is already limping. If the next game doesn't end things, it's genuinely over.

And Erebonia has been built up as the more interesting of the two nations.

Cold Steel had an interesting setting and lore but the character and plot writing was often utterly mediocre to outright bad. Calvard has one of the most uninteresting settings among all of JRPGs and the character writing is basically non-existent after the first game and the plot has absolutely no idea what it wants to be about whenever a sept-terrion isn't involved. I still find Cold Steel weaker than Sky and Crossbell but I get why people look back a bit more generously given how utterly empty Calvard. CS is too much fluff. Too much setting the stage for very little payoff. You can succinctly say what the important parts of the main story in CS are for every game, and yet a lot of the time you do pointless shit as part of it's main story.
Calvard has in essence the same problem but engineered in the complete opposite way.
After Kuro 1 there is very little main story or moments that continue character arcs for a smaller cast. Too much time doing bullshit 4spgs or fucking around in the gartens. I resonated more with the story of Calvard and like more, but the simple fact is the story has moved at a snail's pace since Kuro 1 and there is very little of it. Both stories, the important parts, get developed poorly, but both have enjoyable moments. But I feel that CS and Calvard suffer a lot from trying to tell its own story while also moving on the overarching story of the series.

Vans route in Kai should have been a mixture of Kuro 2 and Kais plots. Van gets wrapped up with the Remnant stuff and they're led by a mysterious White Grendel who battles and impedes Van throughout the game and then the reveal at the end that holy shit, it was Rene the entire time would have hit a lot more than just "oh I guess he has a Grendel now". This way Van also could have done more than just sit in Edith for 75% of the game. If Ys X came out when it was supposed to and this happened then 90% of the doomposting about Calvard wouldn't exist.
