I would recommend the PS1 version. Rewind is basically a slightly upgraded version of the SNES game. It adds some deleted rooms, but it lacks the FMV cutscenes of the PS1 version.

And I have a 4070ti Super so performance was never an issue for me, even the demo played alright. Game is running very smoothly for me.

Decided to do one of these for fun. I didn't find RE6 to be as offensively bad as the internet tried to make me think and despite clearly being an action game first, I had A LOT of fun with it. Same for 5. I wish I liked original 4 as much as everyone else but this game in particular had a lot of "thaaaat part" that drags too long and aren't as much fun for me to play (like the mines, Krauser's QTE fight, the hedgemaze or some parts of the Castle). Luckily the remake actually cut or trimmed all of "those parts".
Honestly I think OG4 is carried hard by nostalgia a le funny one liners alone.

3 Remake was fine, it was a fine product and as fun as any other game. It will ALWAYS compare unfavorably next to the OG but gotta see the game for what it is and not for what it's not. Maybe I just try to be optimistic instead of just hating for the hell of it.

I agree completely with all of your points about RE4. The first hour is a masterpiece and some of the best content in the entire series. But it just goes completely downhill from there. Feels like it neglects the tightness of its systems and the effectiveness of its mood and the purposeful design of hordes of hostiles rushing at you in exchange for lame gimmick rooms and one-off mechanics like shooting turrets or whatever.

Anyway if you liked the feel of RE6 then definitely check out Rev 2. I didn't really like RE6 myself except for the Jake+Sherry campaign, but Rev 2 takes a lot of the same gameplay feel as RE6 and recontextualizes it into a more horror/strategy oriented experience. Rev 2 is one of my favorites

Totally there with you about 6. Like, it’s not hard to see why a lot of people don’t like it, but I was kind of both disappointed and relieved that when I finally got around to playing it for myself it wasn’t ‘literally Satan in video game form’ like the internet has been swearing up and down it is for over a decade now and was actually quite fun like you say, namely the gunplay honestly. There’s lots it got wrong but stuff like the sheer enemy variety shows there was potential, it just got muddled along the way.
Can’t say I really agree with putting 4 in the same tier as 0 and DC lol but overall I agree with the sentiment that nostalgia is carrying it a long way these days and it’s more than starting to show it’s age at this point.
Resistance… falls squarely in the ‘had potential but mostly squandered with some redeeming aspects here and there’ box. RE:Verse is largely the same, and though I actually had decent fun with it for the one (release) night I played it, I haven’t had a singular urge to pick it back up since. Rest of your list is pretty respectable.

Decided to suffer through Cronos anyway. I'll be honest, I'm quite disappointed. Light spoilers ahead.
Originally, I just didn't enjoy how the game felt, though I did eventually get used to it. Your character wears heavy armor, but you never feel the weight. You move slowly, yet with the same mobility as if you were wearing nothing at all. Your footsteps sound no different from a pair of work boots, the MC doesn't physically bend under the weight of the armour, and apparently we're pretty damn strong, but our strength is never used for us in-game. Cutscenes have us bending a door open and carrying something heavy, and that's it. So you move with this dull sluggish pace when you're exploring the level to loot or progress, it takes a long and boring time to get back to the box to drop off your stuff. That slow movement might not bother you at first, but it becomes a real problem once you start managing your inventory.

With the amount of enemies you'll encounter, you're gonna want to carry a lot of ammo, or just ammo, pyre, and fuel canister. That's four slots out of six, and you won't be able to justify using a second gun until way later when you upgrade your inventory slot multiple times. And it’s all gated behind story progression and specific, non-refundable items, unlike the gun currency, which you can reallocate. But you also have healing items and bolt cutters. Good thing is healing items stacks to two, Pyre and fuel canisters can also stack, but only after an upgrade which uses the same scarce resources needed to upgrade your suit. Cutters are purely used to get to more loot. You could argue you don't have to carry them with you, but the alternative is running all the way back, then returning to loot, then going back again to drop them off. So you're better off just sticking with them. This piles on top of the slow movement.

The combat stays the same throughout, with the final unique enemy showing itself about halfway through. You can kinda tell what is what from first glance, but sometimes it does get blurry. Unfortunately, they don't differ enough to change how you approach them. Personally, I dislike that you can easily see an ambush, but you can't do anything about it, you're just gonna have to trigger it anyway. Early on, the lack of ammo and inventory slots work, but eventually you'll get to the point of having to face a lot of enemies at once or in waves. And once you're out of ammo, that's it. Your melee is useless against enemies. You're given tools to interact with world, but man, is it as basic as can be. One lets you "turn back time" to replenish an exploding barrel, but only sometimes. It's used on objects to traverse the world, but I think the option to use it against an enemy only happened once and I didn't even have to do so. It is used in puzzles, but very rarely and it isn't complicated at all, it's literally a case of turning it on, then off, then on. The other tool is the same, you have to make a path for power. But either of these could have been used against enemies in some way to add to our arsenal to introduce more mechanics for us to use aside from our guns.

The guns are basic as well. You got the charging pistol, the charging shotgun, and two charging rifles. Then the auto-pistol, double barrel shotgun, and a BFG type gun that has incredibly limited ammo. The charging pistol becomes a bit rougher to use since you'll be surrounded by enemies and you need to charge it first for it to fire. This causes the reticle to sway excessively so and you're likely to miss even with aim assist. The auto-pistol is undeniably the best weapon in the game overall, you get it about halfway and once you do, just invest in that and don't bother with the rest. The only time you will is just to waste some of the ammo and hopefully eek out some enjoyment.

Lastly, the story... I thought it was good in the first quarter of the game. But eventually, it got very boring and predictable. The lore and world-building I thought was good, I was intrigued. Then it became basically a love story, or at the very least a "human emotion" type deal. Personally, I checked out of the story at that point and the only reason I continued to play the game was because I thought I was at the end. Turns out no, I had 8 more hours to go. The atmosphere and ambience I really enjoyed, with the Eastern European aesthetics and the "Travelers" in this game talk robotic which I thought was very endearing. It's for plot reasons, and your MC is no different, but begins to lose it as time goes on and, once again, devolves into I what I mentioned earlier in the spoiler tags.

Oh, I forgot the phylacteries. It's immensely slight buffs for your character, but they do show one single dialogue line which might add lore or some world-building. Also some achievements, but why would I care about that? All but one of them are so situational I forgot I even had them. Some are literally useless. You also can't choose freely, you have to pick them as you find them in the story and once you replace it, that's it. There's 9 in the game, you can only have 3 at a time. 1 is only found at the end of the game. Nothing would be lost if they didn't exist.

I beat the game, watched the credits for the cutscene at the end, and then closed the game. There's 3 endings, one of them requires NG+, but I'm not doing that. The excitement was found only in the beginning, and then I pushed myself to continue only because I thought it was going to end any second. If I had to give a generic rating, I'd say a 4.5/10. Better than Calisto Protocol.

It looked great, but the combat shitting itself when a second enemy entered the fray, the combat was incredibly repetitive, guns were boring, stealth was redundant, mind-numbingly easy which made it tedious, too many tropes, too silly, the jump scares were laughable, and the real ending being stuck in a DLC that was purely sequel bait does indeed put it below a 4.5 for me.

The only other good thing about it that it was short enough for me to get a refund. I only played it on release, and maybe I was too hyped up for it, but I genuinely don't remember much except the bad parts, so I can't really go in-depth about my dislike for it like i just did with Cronos.

A sale would be smart. A playthrough is roughly 15 to 20 hours, and NG+ would probably get you closer to 10. I don't see a lot of replayability beyond the "true" ending and the achievements. NG+ also lets you keep all your stuff, so at least you get to mess around a lot more and admittedly some of my complaints don't withstand on NG+ either.

Looking to play The Evil Within 2. How stingy is the game with ammo? Compared to Dead Space 2?

Dead Space 2 has a lot of ammo, TEW2 not as much. It has an upgrade system though so by the midpoint it shouldn't matter. For most of the game its far easier to sneak up on and stealth kill enemies since nearly all of them are OHKO. Those that aren't you can hit, run from, wait until they reset and then hit again for a 2HKO.
Protip: Put one or two upgrades into the pistol, then dump everything into the Crossbow especially its plain bolt upgrade path.

TEW2 is more about stealth kills for as many mobs as possible but it doesn't really matter that much. By the midway point you'll have enough to shoot your way out of most encounters. I actually really don't like the game's upgrade system, I felt the same way about TEW1, that it killed a lot of the atmosphere. Imagine being able to just go into a safe room in RE1 with a cute nurse who you exchange zombie goo with to increase your health, damage, speed, etc.

Seeing SHf coverage, it honestly depresses me that the world is so eager to guzzle down slop. The game is no better than Homecoming or Downpour, it has many of the same problems outright, but idiotic tourists and shills and stupid fuck new fans who came in after the bloober remake of 2 praise it anyway. It's not a horror game in any sense. The gameplay is trash inferior even to the games it claimed to want to improve upon. It has no atmosphere. It diverges utterly from the framing of the first four games, and the tenuous connections it does have are misused. It wants to be a psychoanalysis of Hinako, repeating the whole hurr durr it's SH2 again style plot, but it's frankly just stupid fucking nonsense. I'm so tired of the world being full of garbage and people paying money to eat that garbage, so more garbage gets made to cater to them.

I think it's pretty godawful. On the one hand it presents itself as feminist-pandering anti-natalist slop, but as the story unfolds it becomes clear that in actuality Hinako is just a massive self-centered fucking cunt. There's nothing meaningful or sympathetic about her struggle. Ryukishi's manuscript is a stupid fucking mess, just like usual.

Hinako just happening to probably be on a White Claudia-derived drug and that driving her nuts to the point where a spindly Japanese twat can just casually commit a mass murder is not the sort of lore connection I appreciate. The fact some white missionary just arbitrarily came to Japan with the seeds is pretty contrived no matter how you look at it. The extent to which White Claudia can be used to justify the plot (disregarding Hinako's divine bloodline horseshit) is also really suspect.
If I were to list something that's actually good about it, its aesthetic can be cool in a vacuum, but it's not whatsoever Silent Hill. It's its entirely own thing. Even then, it undercuts itself when its bosses talk during the fight and say the sort of shit you'd expect from a Kingdom Hearts boss. The spirit realm is a poor as shit Otherworld less compelling in many ways even than the post-Team Silent funhouses.

Fatal Frame 2 beaten. Not a strong finish to the game imo and probably wont replay it for the "true" ending.

I'm not that anon but I do agree with him that usually gofh circles are noob traps; while you're correct about blood portals in short walking distances, their real value is the fact that they can cut down a lot of sanity and hunger loss. If you don't save Henryk or prefer to keep Abella alive this becomes indispensable as your primary methods for restoring either resource are going to be rng loot drops. This folds into my earlier point about the game's shitty coding because my point would sound retarded if the game worked like it was supposed to. For example, golden chanterelles (individually restoring 7 hunger each) are one of the most common food items in the game and widely abundant as guaranteed drops. Combining 2 into yellow liquid with alchemillas recipes creates an item that is supposed to restore 30 hunger, or you can use it as an ingredient for murky liquid. But if you eat the yellow liquid, it does nothing at all. Another example is Pav's first skill, which is supposed to reduce your sanity loss while exploring outside which becomes incredibly important for making the most of your time at night, instead restores 1 hp every 20 seconds. The sylvian necklace is also broken because it only works on consumables, not skills or other accessories that restore HP/mind. These are just off the top of my head, but by fixing them the game instantly becomes much, much easier on f/h mode because the game can't decide to simply rawdog you with bad loot drops, and you probably won't fuck yourself not knowing what to do or where to go wasting all your resources because there would be working solutions to reduce how much fucking around hurts you. The game isn't unforgiving because it was actually designed that way, but instead because that swedecuck codes like a jeet.
With how much of an update 2.0 is supposed to be. I'm actually fairly reticent because I anticipate it to break more things than it maybe fixes.

Yes. The "Bleeding Earth" (the name of the planet the game is set on) isn't exactly 'real' as we'd understand it. Or rather, it's an actual planet but beneath the thin veneer of being like our modern day, shit is WEIRD. It's under the control of the Vermin Dogs/the Family (you meet their leader, the King of Dogs, in the beginning of the game), who are using it and Venus towards their own ends. All the esoteric nonsense, like humans not even really being alive as we'd understand it, is entirely because of them. The plot of Gold ends with Venus waking up to her true self and figuring things out and the Family shifting gears to trying to get Mercury to fight her - either to stop and kill her to preserve their status quo or to have their fight destroy the current universe so they can create a new one for the Family to "play" in.

Everything Venus experiences in the first game/Gold is her finally seeing the truth of the Bleeding Earth, which until then she was basically being gaslit to keep her 'asleep' and unaware.

Yes, I get what you mean, but the thing is that everyone already knows what that's like, or it's the impression that I get, most people are already wagecucking their lives away at soulless dead-end jobs to barely make ends meet and no prospects of a real future, and there's a lot of "work is pointless" internet discourse about this already. I also believe Americans, who tend to be extraordinarily ignorant about the rest of the world, and do most of the shitposting around SH f, have a harder time understanding it than European or Asian players from countries where things like arranged marriages were (and still are in underdeveloped countries) not out of the norm during post-war eras. To some extent their reaction is understandable, because as far as I know the subhuman concept of marrying your own daughter to a stranger from a wealthier family out of poverty, as if she were an exchange currency, has never been ingrained in American tradition.

But anyway, on the topic of office horror, there's a little story game called Yuppie Psycho which takes place in an office building and your post reminded me of it. I don't exactly recall the story anymore but I do remember liking it enough.

i want to replay RE2 but i have always had an issue where it looks awful unless I enabled HDR, but while the game looks amazing with HDR I just hate it, mostly because my monitor doesn't have great HDR and it makes other stuff look jank. I think the experience is best blind for the most part, but just understand that often, items and skill either don't work, or don't work the way they say they do. For example, the character Levi has an unlockable skill that allows him to instantly kill enemies on the overworld with two shotgun blasts, but this is an ability all characters have by default due to a bug, so buying it is worthless. Another anon already kind of covered the item Yellow Liquid but I'd like to correct that it doesn't do nothing, it's just broken in how it works: if you feed someone Yellow Liquid, then have a different party member eat something, the food meter gained from that other party member will be also reflected on the one who ate the yellow liquid. Also I'll just say that the first choice most people fuck up is that you can either go rescue Henryk and have Abella transform into a monster at the start of the game and have to go through most of Day 1 solo, or recruit Abella and have a party member, but lose Henryk and his free food permanently. The choice is yours, but I get the feeling you're the sort who'd quit the game if you didn't know this beforehand, so just understand that either recruiting Abella or entering the Mayor's house will lock you into one of these two event sequences.
Aside from that, Daan, Levi, or Marcoh are probably the easiest characters to start with. Daan can turn enemy corpses into special items that he can then sacrifice to cure all kinds of status effects, can Analyze defeated enemies to tell strategies on how to beat them easier in future battles, and can expose enemy weakpoints if they have them in battle (this is an actual status effect. For most mobs for example, it will greatly raise your chance of landing an instant death headshot on them). He also can start with a gun and 10 bullets. (Cont.'d)

Daan's ability to harvest organs also permanently kills most enemies that have self-resurrection powers, something you ordinarily would need a bonesaw to do, only he can do it to even enemies the bonesaw won't work on. Levi is the best for guns, he can start with a gun of any choice, and aside from the bugged skill I mentioned his pistol and rifle skills are pretty valuable. Pistol ammo becomes relatively common starting on Day 2 due to the shop opening up, so being able to shoot enemy limbs off with Levi's pistol is very useful. His rifle skill to have a 25% chance of instantly killing an overworld enemy in one shot is also useful, but ostensibly less so due to .303 ammo being much rarer, however the .303 w/Bayonet can be combined with the En Garde skill, which you can get by killing another character on Day 1 or 2. That lets you start battles with a free attack. Marcoh is very simply and easy to use because he does a lot of damage, doesn't really require much thought to be put into his equipment, and can start the game with 2x the health of other characters. He doesn't have any utility skills, at all, but he's a great tank. You can also combine things like his Counterstance skill with another character using the Sylvian spell Pheromones to force enemies to attack him and get raw dogged by counterattacks, which heavily sleights DPS in your favor. If you do that though it can be dangerous unless you use some accessories and decent armor to allow him to survive his potential beatings unscathed.

Anyway I didn't have room to include this in Levi's section, but another benefit to starting with Levi is he can recruit Marina on Day 1 night if you also recruited Abella but didn't kill the Mayor yet. Any other character that tries to do this will be abandoned by her halfway into "level" for lack of a better way to put it. She's a valuable party member because she has a bunch of useful utility magic, like the ability to Engrave sigils on party members to permanently give them certain buffs.
That's about as comprehensive as a starter guide as I think I can give without handholding you too much. Have fun.

Black Kalev is the worst "companion" in the game and a complete waste of a party slot in virtually every situation and unless you're doing a solo run or cheating you're unlikely to have good enough rng to have pulled 12 accessories worth using. The only time PCP isn't useful to have in the party are in battles where he has a 0% chance of appearing to gift you items.
Black Kalev wouldn't be such a shit choice if he a.) weren't so convoluted to recruit and b.) didn't have so many downsides
His stats aren't good, you can't control him so he acts purely with AI which means he never uses the rev mechanic, he can't equip any items, he can't be taught new skills with the hexen, and has no party utility. The really fucked part is that he's most useful on Day 1, but unless you used the dev tile exploit you're unlikely to be able to recruit him before Day 2 morning .. when you have access to Marina, Abella, Levi, Olivia and Marcoh to be your companions depending on how things went on Day 1. And because as I mentioned he can't equip accessories, this means you can only have a max of 9 accessories in play instead of 12. The only time you could ever really consider using him is in Masochism mode where there are no recruitable party members besides him, but even then, I'd argue using a party of ghouls/golems would be a better idea.
Compared to Moonless from the first game he's just straight up trash.
