As someone who forced themselves to learn how to draw; just saying "learn the basics" really does not help but it's like what everyone says to start with. Beginners need _specific direction_, and constant reinforcement to focus on specific aspects until you can build up enough specific knowledge to make a whole drawing that looks acceptable to your eyes.

For beginners though they have to accept that they HAVE to do it even with lack of direction. There is no clear cut way to getting drawing skill, in fact that's what gives people their different art styles which is a huge part of the beauty of art. So while there are a lot of tutorials that you will never understand, you have to force yourself to interpret it in your own way and put it to pen. Until you actually make something and see what your output looks like you will never understand where and how far you need to go to reach your own acceptable level. Once you start making something no matter how 'ugly' you think it is, the bridges to the good art will never show themselves because you don't take that first bridge that allows you to go to the important second, third etc bridges where all the good art shit lies

In my case my first drawing was some hyper deformed character inspired by some artist's depiction of rhythm game songs as hyper chibified animals. That drawing was made with _only_shapes, ovals for eyes arms legs, triangle for mouth and cloth accessories, 2 weird trapezoid like a trenchcoat. it took me a while of being satisfied with this until i finally started drawing actual human body part-shapes.

...I dunno, I just kept editing AI slop more and more intensively until I learned how to draw body parts. It's weird, no matter how much I learn from doing it, I freeze up when it comes to doing any real art without some sort of AI base. It just feels way more high stakes.

I mean at that point you've just gotten to the same as a lot of 'regular' artists in referencing and learning, just that the base content is machine slop.

Lotta folks have trouble with making the jump from that to making something without, it's a big wall but it's doable.

It's been shockingly helpful as a tool, honestly. It's always relevant to what you want, can be in a style that's approachable to you, and it doesn't feel like you're doing "real" art (even at points where you're objectively studying anatomy to draw in replacement body parts), so there's none of the insane mental pressure/baggage that comes with that.
