I think the only time someone has said you have to summon anything is Skadi, Castoria and Koyanchihuahua and Oberon since they enable almost every servant in the game one way or another. Everything outside of them are mostly to complete them. Having said that Summer Ibuki is a nice multi comp servant who both buff and has 50% charge to use her NP.

If you're from ancient times while the ages of gods are still active, then yeah, being a servant is often a nerf. Especially demi gods types like Herc where being in a servant container prevents them from using some other stuff they used to have back when they have alive. Of course you still have exception like if their legends end up giving them special weapons/ abilities to represent their fame. e.g. Medea didn't have rule breaker when she was alive.

It's strange how there has never been an instance of a servant commenting on their new-found power (if they were buffed physically in a way). They always make it seem like they had these physical abilities during their lifetime, ie. Okita moving that fast during her NP. Generally speaking yes if you compare to all the aspects, skills, treasures and other fields of expertise a Heroic Spirit's legend may encompass. Though on a deeper discussion level we could consider perhaps the different periods some of these servants held or embodied different aspects of their legends, as they may master different skills at different points or be more attuned to certain roles at other moments or periods of their lives.

Caster Gill for instance reflects a later and wiser period of his legend, where the administrative and religious kingly role takes greater emphasis than the earlier adventurer aspect. So at that period Gilgamesh is reading more and being more in contact with tomes of knowledge which develops his Caster abilities more and so on. Different periods which come to develop distinct skillsets.

Now the classes were originally designed by the Will of Humanity (the Counterforce or Alaya) in order to combat threats to it (Beasts, Calamities, Singularities, Foreign beings), so they are expressions of a specialized role for that task and a role that reflects the way humanity fights. And as such a servant summoned on a certain class should be at the prime of their ability to exercize that class role, usually speaking.

Servants (in the context of Heroic Spirit summoning as it was originally intended which is not HGW's) are basically: 1) Extensions of a Heroic Spirits' repertoire 2) Tools tailored for a very specific role.

"Alter Ego" was originally just an Extra verse specific thing that deals mainly with Sakura AI fuckery. Bringing it into FGO and making it apply to other servants just make it into a bigger nonsense even by TM standards.

You can't even just handwave it away as 'that's old FSN/ Fuyuki grail system" stuff. FGO itself already has young Li vs old Li, 3 different Gilgamesh at different points in their life, the aforementioned Apoc Vlad vs Extra Vlad etc. And then you also have Alters like Nito Alter's situation.

Ah, servant's memories is kind of a can of worms really, specially on the topic of how much does a servant remembers from past summons. The information and the way it's been implemented on various chapters/story's narratives or character's lines over the years has been ambiguous at best and contradictory at worst. Originally, a servant shouldn't remember his past summons but that's often contradicted, subverted or made some kind of exception. Or sometimes, when they should remember, you have some excuse to make them not remember characters or events they should.

I think you can safely digest that the extent of a servant's memories is whatever the author handling it needs in order to develop a given chapter's narrative or scenario (does it help with the interactions within the story), or if they want to have a servant's line to remember, even if faintly, a certain character they met at different Fate stories or spin-offs for the claps, that kind of thing.

Other than that there's basic stuff like a servant knowing the general context of the time they're being summoned on.

I've said it before here but the extra classes beyond Avenger and Ruler (these two are already pushing the envelope) are all mistakes. Even beyond what you said, which definitely applies, they all come with the added baggage of having to be written around/catered to in a story since they're all so specific or weird. You wouldn't have to handle a Rider or a Saber any differently than you would a Lancer or an Assassin in terms of story portrayal. But to make a Pretender relevant they'd have to make their reveal the crux or climax of the story since servants already hide their identities naturally. And with Foreigners they make the Outer God connection the main aspect of their story OR just not deal with them at all by making them a joke servant. I really hope they don't make any new classes going forward honestly.

Bhima alter ego isn't just bhima when he was a chef. It removed everything except his chef side, which is why he doesn't care about battle or winning at all.

A lot of the times it's kinda like a synthesis of themes or the nature of a Heroic Spirit's legends (according to the author's reading or analysis), in her case it's said that Rule Breaker 'conceptualizes her life as the Witch Medea'. In Hollow Ataraxia her wish as a servant, after her life of tragedy and disillusion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy7Q77ZD_ME, is to come back to her original home and start back. So Rule Breaker reflects or synthesizes that, a will to nullify all those experiences, all social and relationship contracts, and go back to where she once was. A reset. Which narratively speaking is also what she ultimately gets in her character arc, by finding a new, happy (sort of newlywed) life as a servant with her new master Souchiro.

It's kind of a power formed from Nasu's vision of Medea as a tragic character. Sometimes servants are able to synthesize noble phantasms based on their legends, another case would be Super Orion by the end of Atlantis, creating a new NP based on the love that defines his and Artemis' love story.

Medusa incidentally has some very derivative Noble Phantasms too, things she didn't wield or more specifically, ride in life, such as Pegasus (her NP being named after the one who actually rode him in legend), yet Pegasus is still linked to her by a genitive chain of events, such as the fact Pegasus is born from her decapitated head. Even Saber Medusa's whole theme and source of powers as a 'mother of monsters' is based on that genitive causality, specifically her genealogy giving a higher birth to both Pegasus and Chrysaor, the latter fathering Echidna who goes on to eventually mother a lot of monsters known in legend by the union with Typhon. The connection with Athena is probably due to Athena herself having a similar birth (Medusas's gaze as an Aegis is also given to Athena herself eventually), and things expanded elsewhere.
