A good example of this friction is missile units.
In multiplayer, a missile unit is limited by its ammo. It expends its ammo and then is effectively eliminated from the battle, or it's pressured by the enemy and never gets the opportunity to expend its ammo. Missile units need to be strong in MP because you can only spare to have a few of them and still have enough frontline to give them the opportunity to expend their ammo and because they need to be able to deal their gold value's worth in damage

By comparison, in singleplayer a missile unit restocks its ammo after every battle and can inflict all of its damage in a battle without exposing itself to casualties. For a ranged unit to be pull its weight in SP, it just needs to inflict casualties/damage equivalent to one unit on the enemy side. Armies that are majority ranged units are viable in SP as certain factions, because the efficiency of dealing all of your damage with minimal casualties, and thus being able to repeatedly face battles consecutively without waiting for replenishment, makes them incredibly efficient.

Tau are a big candidate for early inclusion just because they're one of the few xenos unit rosters that aren't a glorified endgame crisis.

Obviously launch will have Eldar and Orks. Necron and Tyranid are big candidates for early DLC but they're both basically crisis-tier threats. Tau are a good candidate because they're unique (unlike Dark Eldar just being an unpopular subfaction) and flesh out the map without being an apocalyptic enemy the way that Tyranid or Chaos are.

Bow Ashigaru are the kings of Shogun 2's combat and bow cavalry are basically just foot archers that move fast but have like 1/3 of the models. They don't have any innate damage advantages to offset the lower model count and really the only situation where being an archer unit that moves fast is an advantage is when kiting cavalry, but kiting is weird and inconsistent in Shogun 2 and cavalry isn't really that threatening.

In other games, the real advantage of bow cavalry is that they can easily circle around to circumvent shields blocking missiles, but nothing in Shogun 2 is shielded.

Yari Samurai exist to suck... for some reason. CA just really couldn't find a role for this unit despite how small S2's rosters are.

Matchlock units just kill more than archers. Samurai all have armour that gives them an extra saving roll when they're hit by bows, reducing the casualties taken. Naginata Samurai also have an additional roll to survive on top of that. Matchlocks ignore this value, making them more lethal against lategame samurai armies than archers.
Matchlock Ashigaru have miserable reload speed so they're really only good for the initial volley. I think their sustained DPS is actually lower than bows but they can basically delete a charging unit of samurai if you time that volley right, because their accuracy increases with distance. They also get a massive RoF buff when defending castle walls, which make them the absolute best unit to garrison with.

Matchlock Samurai have much better RoF and cleanly beat all bow units in killing power

Portugese Tercio are both the strongest ranged unit in the game and also comparable to Naginata Samurai in melee but they're exclusive to the Otomo.

All matchlocks have a significant range disadvantage vs bows, especially the special elite bows with extra range and since Ashigaru don't have any missile resistance there's really no advantage to using guns against them.

You'll understand their strength/weaknesses and their roll in the battlefield better if you play as the Otomo, who get them from the start of the game. For anyone else I think the campaign is basically over before you unlock them, and by that point your archers have so many buffs and chevrons that there's no reason to bother.

And under: database>battle>fragments is mention of Leering Devil Mournfang Crossbow and axe units.

I've also seen people say Mung the Brutal is in the game files with Golgfag's Model representing him, but I can't find the exact file location at the moment.

Not sure if they're still in the current build, but all this is to say: Omens of Destruction itself already vindicated the fact that these leaks were true, at least in part.

I think a big problem is that someone declared war on you.

Usually you have a neighbor or two who slowly start hating you, until they declare war.
And then there's another mechanic where "the player has been at peace for too long on Very Hard, some neighbor should declare war".
If you're lucky, these two things happen with the same neighbor.
If you're unlucky one neighbor declares war because you can never be at peace, and a different neighbor declares war because of the hate.

You should always be the first to declare war, as soon as possible, and not get declared on.
You should also NOT just "declare war", but instead you find an enemy of that faction, you "offer to join war" and in exchange you get a non-aggression pact or some good cash.
This way you start the war with someone else alongside you (2v1) and you also have a bunch of money.
You do this with the right enemy, very soon, and this way you make sure that you're immediately at war, so the only AI who will attack you is the AI who actually hates you, and not a random neighbor that was chosen just to end your era of peace.

...also, be SUPER careful with diplomacy: if Archaon and Arbaal have a trade agreement, and you attack one of them, the other will go to war with you sooner or later.

One last thing: if you attack Epidemius in the late game, it's not that bad.
If you attack Arbaal in the late game, it's a nightmare.
So you should attack the bigger problem first.

As an aside, I find that it is very useful in scorched earth campaigns to sell settlements and raze them without rebuilding it to leave buffer areas.
I usually do this with anything on a coast line because as soon as you have a port every fucking nation on the coast sees you and starts diplomacy with you (usually for threats and war declarations).

Always take Archaon out first, after that the campaign is a reaction-based one, usually I take Arbaal out next because Tamurkhan doesnt immediately declare war on me and Arbaals a pain in the ass. Hopefully either Kholek can hold out long enough for you to wipe out Arbaal then pivot back towards Tamurkhan to take him out, once had a scenario where Kholek wiped Tamurkhan out as I made my way back North. Along the way Daniel will be annoying as fuck but DO NOT expand towards him because Malus is there, recruit a Witch Lord general and put her at your capital, Daniel will constantly keep sending enemies your way and a stack of Kossars led by an Ice Witch should handle him easily while you clean up Tamurkhan/Kholek. After that I usually rush back up North (Grimgor almost always leaves me alone) and head towards Kislev which is usually razed to the ground by Azazel and Clan Moulder. Very fun campaign but its also a lot of risk/reward. Boris is really strong especially once he gets on his bear.
