It's so annoying fighting characters with neutral skipping teleports as versusia, all it takes is one wrong call on a projectile and they're in your face getting a combo.
Luci's feels really bad to play against because you don't have a meterless dp that will beat every teleport option so you just have to hold it.

The saddest thing is that Rising has short combos by modern fighting game standards. Combo autism is one of the major reasons why fighters are a niche genre. SF2 had fuck-all combos, was the most popular fighter of all time and yet modern fighters trying to chase after a larger audience refuse to shorten their combos. Okay let's go in order: Samurai Shodown had incredibly botched launch, wasn't on PC for years, the PC launch was also botched, had delay netcode, and when they tried upgrading to rollback that too was incredibly botched. As a result, nobody plays it, and you can't blame them.
I've played fighters for over a decade and I have never heard of koihime enbu, so I don't blame anyone else for not having heard of it either.
KOF98 is old krusty kusoge. Even if it has short combos, I'm sure it also has extreme kusoge shit all over. Generally speaking people who want short combos aren't looking for that kind of thing. It's also a SNK game which means it's not officially playable with decent netcode.
Fantasy Strike, while indeed having short combos and a lot of great ideas other fighters should copy, is also very experimental and steers a bit too far from what most people are looking for in a fighter. It is also extremely ugly and offputting in a way that even most other ugly fighters aren't.

I can only speak for myself, but I won't touch any fighter that doesn't have an input buffer. Old games without input buffers just feel like dogshit to play. I generally don't enjoy high execution, for me the joy in fighting games is reading and outwitting the opponent. If I enjoyed manual dexterity, I would play a musical instrument.

When I'm doing a combo and the game doesn't have a combo breaker mechanic, my opponent is not playing. His inputs or decisions don't matter, thus I am playing a single-player game. When my opponent is doing a combo, the same applies to him, while I am essentially watching a cutscene. I would like for most of the time I spend playing be the multiplayer aspect of the game, because that is the reason I am playing a multiplayer game. The reward should not occupy a larger amount of total gametime than the actual interactive part. Saying it's a reward doesn't nullify this fact. Also the actual reward is the damage done which brings you closer to winning the game, a combo is simply a means to achieve that and should occupy as short of a time as possible as not to waste the time of both players and getting back to the actually interesting part of the game (ie. the part of the game where both players play the game).

Long combos just get boring after a while there's no nuance, that's it. I like that this game is easy and simple but it would be even better if those long combos didn't exist. It's like they mixed things that do not mesh well together.

The game would be better if they would end after 1 special rather than cycling all of them, even multiple times per combo. The reason why they're this long is also to achieve the 2-3 interactions per round crap with 50% off a corner to corner 66L starter, because of course you can't keep combos like this in the game if they deal half that. Shorter combos, instead, would work well with that concept. Even though I'll admit some fighting games have still 2-3 touches with shorter combos (every hit just deleting you, like Tekken 3).

It's true. Vanilla Versus literally had those simple 4-5 hit combos in the corner that were mentioned in this replychain but if you go watch the footage they still did similar to Rising damage. It just basically didn't have many midscreen conversions that did corner to corner compared to this game.
In the end, it is more interesting to do longer combos, to chain more attacks together than less. And if you want shorter combos, they still will do similar damage, so just don't be a bitch who gets uncomfortable when an opponent combos you for 8 seconds instead of 6.

Why do you keep bringing up damage in regards to World Warrior when it has literally nothing to do with a conversation about combo length? Damage only matters in regards to combo length by how many combos you do per round on average, that is to say, if the game is a 2-toucher and the combos take over 10 seconds, you are going to spend most of the game either comboing or getting comboed. I don't like or defend World Warrior, I only bring it up to point that the genre started with very short combos so games like that are extremely viable and thus it seems odd that every modern fighter franchise devolves into comboslop and keeps adding ways to make combos longer and longer.
