Going to complain about something. There's a common trope where a heroine fell in love with MC when they children, then meets him again but doesn't know he's the same person. This isn't bad in itself, but it is when it's treated as a central point of drama for their romantic development. Or more specifically, if her realizing that MC is the same person is what allows the romance to be fulfilled. What that means, I think, is that the heroine doesn't actually love MC as he is, because she isn't willing to be in a relationship with him until she knows he's the person she was already in love with when she was a child. Whenever I feel like this is going to happen in a game it makes me dislike the heroine because I know she's ultimately just hung up on someone else. The MC in front of her isn't that person, he's grown and changed over the years, and she won't date him unless he ends up being the person from the past, regardless of what else happens. It's a very hateful personality trait.

The anime is basically an inversion of the game. Whoever made it hated the game, or at least a number of important aspects of the game, and deliberately inverted them in the anime. I can give you examples but it will include spoilers. It's a very good game IMO, so if you seem interested in it you should read it yourself and make up your own mind. If you end up not liking it then drop it.

Actually I can probably give a few examples while being vague. In early parts of the game one of the characters is changed drastically so that they become unsympathetic, whereas in the game it's important that they be a sympathetic character because they're a main character in a later route. There's a lot of romantic development left out of this part in favor of angsty drama that's made up specifically for the anime. More importantly, in later parts there's important religious symbolism that all gets erased. Instances of churches and Christian hymns are all removed. There's a character who is an atheist who has important character development related to this, which is completely negated in the anime because of its anti-religious bias. It's basically like a mutilation of everything the game is about.

In a way moving on would show the heroine isn’t loyal, her love was never strong. She couldn’t love the present day MC because her love for his past self prevents it, not because he’s unlikable or anything, and finding out that they are the same unlocks it. If she said fuck the old guy and dated MC and then later found out they are the same dude, it would be like a form of rejection, saying she never truly loved him before if she could throw it away so easily and she’s a weak willed person for giving in.

Yeah it has five MCs who each have their own chapter and heroine. It goes in sequential order, so you play as one of them, then the next one, etc. Don't try to skip any of it. That being said, in my opinion the second chapter is a bit weak, so if you aren't as fond of that one I recommend to just keep reading.

I'd have to dig up my old posts but I remember being very disappointed in how it treated some characters, it was so close to being great and just flopped instead. At least it's artistically on a high level and somewhat interesting because of that and superb directing. Some of the arcs (namely Chihiro's and true) are better than others.
