A Runescape 3 private server from right before Elite Dungeons were released, with fully working EoC. I played Ataraxia for a while and it was fun, but it's mostly legacy combat with only a handful of utility abilities such as Freedom and Anticipate. Then they did a big bulk update involving Necromancy (lol why) and I stopped playing that too

Soft-quit 3 years ago in the middle of GWD3 release. Started botting my ass off to max xp for fun and to see how far I could go without getting permed. Ended up at about 4.8b xp before I got banned because my VIP ran out and apparently botting detection is a lot more lenient when you're VIP. That happened start of 2024

Then in late 2017 it started going downhill. First occurrence of heavily inflated HP slayer mobs in the Grove, revolution++ starting the endless rape of the economy and casualization of the game, since then it's only been downhill

There were never all that many posters. Perhaps half a dozen regular ones, about half of who did nothing but post anime girls and talk about butt sex. Most of the rest just talked shit about the game and how bad it had become ( like this thread ). Maybe one or two guys plus the occasional tourist actually tried to serious discussions ( good luck with that ).
Now I am pretty sure it was just one or two guys who kept remaking the thread. Always the same format. Regular as anything. Who in their right mind would bother doing that year after year when literally no one gave a fuck? So either they were narcissistic fanbois who eventually tired of the game ( how ironic ) or else the threads were created by Jagex themselves ( which more than one anon theorized was the case ). If so then Jagex decided to give it up after getting nothing much other than negativity, and honestly all that talk about assfucking and gay Jmods made by a few posters probably wasn't the sort of look they wanted.
If either theory is correct then it is just surprising they didnt just bot the threads into a mangled nonsensical mess like what happens on /osrs/ where there is a constant downpour of no reply three word throwaways being vomited out faster than a drunk Irishman can fart.
I must admit the one thing /rsg/ had going for it was a degree of continuity, even if much of that continuity was focused around things like Mod Foul, Dang, dumb reaction jpegs, and anal sex.
Its also possible that the /osrs/ threads are mostly created by Jagex and spammed by their bots. The reason why I think that is I made a couple of *controversial* throwaway posts there which were quickly deeply buried under the usual noise of mindblowing levels of sheer retardation. But lo and behold someone scrolled through the long list of inane gibberings to find my posts and reply with a vitriolic attack. On a board where 99% of posts are no reply. I thought it was amusing.

I came back on December 31st (2023), got membership for a year, and got 99 in everything but combat skills.
As December hit I felt less and less motivated, and when I found out the 12 month reoccurring subscription was NOT grandfathered in for the older price, the price hike made me quit, if it was the old price I would have probably gone another year, gotten a max cape and completionist cape, finish the quests, see everything there is, but, shelling out 100 bucks just for a game I've effectively "Finished" was just another twist of the knife, Jagex jacking up the prices and having the jewiest tactic of screwing people over for getting the longest subscriptions.

I feel like I wasn't alone and as the year finished up and prices went up, more and more people just opted to not renew, and eventually it fell through. The thread creators just aren't around now.

If the game is still around by the summer I might get a subscription to just finish up, complete the quests, maybe take down some bosses, but as it is, I just don't want to support Jagex anymore. They put more effort into pride parades than giving players something to do, after fucking the progression super hard over the years, especially if you use MTX or the holiday stuff.

I started getting into RS3 somewhen in 2020 and got comp cape and HM zuk cape in a span of 3 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. But with each passing DXP it felt like there is no point in skilling outside of it and seeing the people who just mindlessly afk virtual 120's was just extremely depressing. Bossing was fun but witnessing bonds going from 25M to 150M killed it for me. Clues were fun too but you can only do it for so long before you get tired of sliding puzzles.

My premier ran out just as they announced the membership price hike and kept doubling down on more and more different TH promos while asking players about MTX changes. Hero Pass was a funny thing that made a lot of people quit but I found it had several good features like replacing the current daily challenge bullshit. After that jagex got scared shitless and simply returned to milking TH whales. Wish they would just nuke the entire Solomons store and TH and keep the runecoin cosmetics if they have to. But gaymods are too busy working on pronoun titles and horrid quests as of late. Oh and group ironman lol. I had high expectations for it after its popularity in OSRS but people still havent recovered from the 1-2 punch of EoC and Squeel of Fortune - with good reason.

Sadly i dont see myself returning unless they finally do a 360 on their MTX policy which will never happen. I did basically complete the game afterall and got my moneys worth. (im not getting a trimmed comp thats fucking autistic)

It buck broke the meta and replaced it with a half-assed nigger-rigged Frankenstein hotbar abomination. Then they followed that up that genius move by deleting the beloved and iconic art in order to ape WoW's aesthetic and attract the easily distracted. They stuffed reskins in and made em shuffle around in the clunky grid and tick skinsuit of a browser game from 2001. I maxed pre-archaeology and just screwed around slaying and doing clues for a while, but once archaeology came out it felt like I'd been rugpulled with an extremely slow, RNG-heavy skill to get my pretty cape back. It wasn't an immediate decision to quit, I just took longer breaks until eventually I just never returned. Nothing that's come out since then (around about the release of Extinction, iirc) has made me want to come back, either. It's always

RS3 goes fully free to play with microtransactions. Jagex are never going to remove pay to win lootboxes from RS3, but at least if they went properly free to play I wouldn't have to weigh the cost of a bond vs the minimal amount of fun I'd get out of it.

I have a few, but these days when I think of RS3 I think of the 2-3 weeks I spent with one of my in-game friends grinding Dungeoneering. I needed Hefin recipes and she needed non-combat dungeoneering exp for some autistic exp distribution (she wanted to get 99s in a checkerboard pattern and HP was not in the pattern), so we spent weeks locked in the dark rooms in Daemonheim just speedrunning larges and making me do all the guardian doors and bosses. It was autistic in a fun way.

What's the honest outlook if someone is looking to play it as an idle "numbers go up" game with mmo elements? I've barely touched rs3 since I started playing osrs off and on. I like osrs well enough, but I like Daemonheim, and all the other stuff that's been added since seems interesting enough to poke around.

If you like Numbers go up and Idling then you will love archaeology which is an entire skill based around idle prospecting. Mining rework is also AFK, sadly only the highest levels of woodcutting is AFK so baby steps there.

Combat is about the same as it ever was, some switchscape got removed, some switchscape got added, slayer is easier than ever to go grind since they removed wilderness pvp which means aggression pots are much cheaper than they used to be.

Anything interesting storylines after god wars 3? I felt like that quest series was the capstone on rs3 as a whole with you losing your world guardian status.

Sliske's endgame was nothing more than a mid season finale. His character was there just to introduce shadow magic and how it can be used to fuck with elder gods. Guthix got him obsessed with our main character to the point where he wanted to be like the world guardian, all so we can take in the shadow magic as he tried to fuse with us using the staff. OSRS has massive HP and drop rate inflation in its lategame where they genuinely expect you to grind 200 hours at a boss to see a unique drop. RS3 bosses have largely kept to 1/512 or better with multiple uniques from each boss and you can kill them a lot faster, so the odds of going turbo dry are lower and it hurts less when it happens.

The regular double exp events killed the game for me. It just made any and all skilling outside of double exp feel like a waste. I also never really enjoyed fighting bosses, and the game seemed to pivot to focusing on developing harder and harder boss fights.
I quit right before necromancy released so I never got to try it, but archeology was fun.

I quit about 3 years ago. It was nothing Jagex did in particular, I just finally got tired of wasting so much time on something worth nothing. I sold anything tradable in my bank, destroyed anything not tradable, bought a FSOA (5.4b at the time), gave it to a /rsg/ member, said bye, and logged off for the last time.

I take joy in seeing the game die. I hope it is killed off fully and completely soon. But I did really love killing Ripper Demons and Arraxor.

Ataraxia is the only RS3 private server, but it doesn't have quests and runs exclusively on legacy combat, with a couple of utility abilities available like Freedom for stun cleansing or Surge for instant transmissioning. I've mainly been melee but outside of Berserk, the 3 aoe attacks and a few defensive abilities(mainly anticipation and freedom, and reflect/the other one that heals you) it all felt like various flashy animations for the single purpose of nullifying weapon attack speed

Actually figuring out healthy, optimal ability rotation was really fun. It wasn't just "use basic abilities as filler, dump thresholds whenever possible, or use the designated damage increasing ult whenever off cooldown". It was a lot deeper than that. Runescape being inherently so complex added a lot of situational circumstances to whether using certain abilities at certain times was a good idea or not.

You had to really get into a zen flow and adhere to certain rotations to get optimal performance, and if you ever fucked up something, you'd get punished for it noticeably. Add learning how to soul split flick and you had a beautiful piano symphony of a gameplay where, if executed properly and with lots of practice, trial, and error, nothing could stop you. Then for the cherry on top; enrage/streak bosses to actually match this skill ceiling.

And it was an amazing blueprint for updates. At any point when they added even just one new basic ability or upgraded basic ability, it would completely change how optimal rotations would work. Greater ricochet (desu I hate this one because it turned ranged into an ultra safe, steroid healing style for babies but it was nowhere near as damaging as necro still), greater conc, magma tempest all drastically changed how you approached highest level combat with their respective styles, without terribly devaluing. For example, even right before Necromancy, 4taa still remained a super strong method of maging especially great for ironmen if you were good enough at the game, despite shit like greater conc, fsoa, and magma tempest existing.

It was better than any other ability cooldown centered MMO got even close to.

Then necromancy showed up with really low IQ, shallow mechanics to its abilities, where optimal play is exactly what a beginner PvMer would do: living death whenever possible, spam basics and touch of death, finger of death wherever possible unless death skulls was off CD. In one blow all the complexity that had been slowly built up since EoC started picking up (imo around the time they made surge an off-global cooldown ability, october 2017).

There were some other really unnecessary updates that were quite damaging to the integrity of the game's challenge and economy, like cryptbloom + animate dead letting you fully AFK GWD2 bosses or letting shitters clear high enrage telos when they otherwise couldn't, FSOA being way too powerful, lots of "APM nerfs" such as permanent ring of vigour, greater sunshine/swiftness, dive ability, and revo++ another really harmful update to the economy, but I could write a whole book about this.

But tl;dr - at its peak, EoC was a beautifully autistic niche for those who enjoyed it, mostly thanks to runescape's existing complexity, jank, and tick system mechanics, kinda like playing the piano. It definitely wasn't for everyone though and it's still lame they forced it upon the game originally.

Now, I will address this. Jank can make games interesting and stand out among their peers. A lot of people actually LIKE the jankiness of RuneScape. So do I. But a significant amount of people do not. You need new players to join to keep a live-service game around. Obviously.

I think the next major thing RS3 could do is rework the tick system. Now obviously all games operate on a tick system. As per the wiki, what is the RS3 tick system?

Even if the entire game is rewritten to account for this, changes have to be made sooner or later. This is literally just making a new game effectively, so an entirely new engine would probably be an even better idea. Again, the game might even shut down sooner than this even happens. Will RS3 actually ever shut down? Honestly, I doubt it. I think RuneScape has a very dedicated player base.

Changing the tick system would allow for endless possibilities to revitalize RuneScape and make it truly fresh again. It can be argued that a tick system rework isn't even necessary, and if it isn't, great! That's good news! I personally think it is.

To go back to my first argument, the art style of RuneScape 3 is very odd. EoC is the most controversial update in the game's history, alongside the release of MTX in the form of Squeal of Fortune, back in 2012. EoC changed the art style of the entire game's aesthetic. From bosses to armor to weapons to the cannon. Everything was changed. Some things for the better, arguably many for the worse. It is very subjective, like anything. The best thing that can be done is to make a universally consistent art style across the entire game. This would obviously accompany the graphical rework of the game. It's just very noticeable and off-putting, in my opinion.

Quest reworks. This is a minor thing that I want, and I don't think it's as important as the other points. Graphically update all old quests, such as the penguin questline and the fairy tale questline. They both take you to the penguin landmass and Zanaris, respectively. These areas are literally untouched and are straight out of the early and late 2000s! Just minor touch-ups would work wonders for these old areas. The new player experience is what this entire post is really trying to address. You need new players to just be immersed in your game. I'm also okay with quests being rewritten and reworked entirely. Then simply buff the rewards. Make them worth doing. In my opinion, MMOs NEED minigames. At least for those of us who like them. Not everyone does, and that's fine. MMOs need to have what I consider "breather content," content you just do to chill and have fun. If I wanted to boot up RS3 right now and play Pest Control, I might be able to if I begged some people to join me. But otherwise, it's likely not going to happen at all.

I think there are a few options to this. Minigames that are "outdated" can either be combined with others to create new minigames. Or deleted entirely. There is also the option of creating new minigames entirely. I would just like to see minigames addressed in some capacity at this point. This is very important for the new player experience. You need consistency when it comes to progression. Skills also need to be more useful across the board. Why is there a severe lack of agility shortcuts? Why did I get 99 agility to maybe use one or two shortcuts every now and then? Just sprinkle them all over the game world. Give us actual incentive to level our skills besides the max cape.

Accept that the damage caused by MTX has been done and turn it off for good. If you got your "early bird bonus" (with a game that has had MTX for 13 years, so be it). I would convert literally all treasure hunter items that have ever been obtained on an account to...something? People WOULD complain otherwise. This is the hardest issue to be addressed in the game, ultimately. But I've never liked MTX, and I never will. Being able to get a Chaotic Lucky longsword is so ridiculous to me. Like, sure, it's only T80, but like, what?

I think the way I confirmed for myself is being excited for Black Grimoire Cursebreaker(basically a singleplayer Not-Runescape) and then actually playing it and having this growing sense of "what the actual fuck am I doing with my free time".

I don't think I've ever noticed or grumbled at "grinding" in games like Spiral Knights or World of Tanks. Yeah the grind is much less severe but at least the "grind" is to actually play the game and enjoy it, and be rewarded for it.

Yes, and were surrounded by people that wanted to push their game in the direction of fun rather than monotony. Beauty of RS is as a sandbox-adjacent MUD, and RS3 abandoned the sandbox concept when it made the player character god(ish), abandoned the MUD roots when it went action-bar.

RS3 is way more shifted towards endgame, especially now that Necro has raised the floor for PvM significantly. That's the MMO experience though, grind for infinity hours to afford tiny improvements. Runescape is pretty bad but OSRS is far worse if you want best in slot gear. Both games cost ~2 to 2.5 billion for the best gear set ups, but that's 10x faster to make in RS3. Realistic Zulrah is 2.5m an hour, equivalent in RS3 would maybe be Helwyr at 17m an hour? Maybe Kerapac at 22m?

Low intensity skilling is decently profitable too, I got my lvl 80 mage gear after a week by just mining shit on a second monitor while I worked.

But yeah if you don't want a grind or P2W you should probably avoid most mmos.

No more new quests every 1-3 months. Now we were lucky to get more than 2 quests in a single year. But plenty of dev time available to be spent making new bosses. All the pre-EoC quest bosses broke and became piss easy to blow through. Never adjusted or fixed. Just left to be shit.

And the signature heroes? 6 of them not counting the player. 4 of them combat related. The quest one? Killed by a combat one. The skiller one? Stripped of her status and made to be a liar who wasn't as great of a skiller as claimed, then killed, then brought back as a combat boss. I don't know if killing off all the non-combat heroes was purposeful or subconscious, but I don't see it as a coincidence.

Invention? Trained almost entirely by combat.

And the last thing that got me. The mining/smithing update we were supposed to get in 2016. I had been looking forward to it. Finally making the skills viable as money makers instead of having all the ore/bars drop from combat. To give skillers a chance to finally catch up to combat players. But what happened? Combat players complained that they wouldn't make as much money, and the update got dropped 1-2 months before release. The literal reason for the skill update was what they complained about and Jagex caved to them immediately. Then the update got delayed by what? 3? 4 years?

I was a couple hundred hours of minigame spotlight away from trimmed comp, but I just dropped the game. I couldn't handle the bullshit anymore. Too many fag mods who only cared about combat making all the other parts of the game suffer.

Not at all, it's mostly grindy and you will have to actually learn a proper spreadsheet starting at 1k enrage, because there's too many factors and mechanics throughout the fight that at higher enrage you can't just deal with reactively, you have to set up a lot of things in advance, do proper resource management etc. Some of the harder aspects of Gold Warden with mage vs necro as an example:

>at 3.5k+ enrage, telos can autoattack you for like 8k damage through prayer
So that means if you're unlucky and he rolls 2 successful hits in a row, you die, unless rotate defensives through the whole fight appropriate and play the stunlock minigame. This problem was mostly elevated by having to use a zerk aura to hit 100% hit chance to ensure you hit all your stuns and debilitates and also not get fucked by a splashing detonate causing Telos to autoattack you in p4 and ruin the whole kill.

But they've removed splashing so none of those things matter as much, and Necromancy doesn't need to use a zerk aura so necro actually has such high defense and lowered incoming damage that even at 4k, he's very manageable from a survival POV. Necro also allows you to autopilot health restoration so you don't have to be able to tick perfectly soul split flick throughout the entire fight.

For necro? Just grab 5 souls from wars dummies and then press volley of souls and instantly clear the dps check even with 0 adren lmao. No need for in-combat defense shredding either just invoke lord of bones with your skelly out at the start and you will have 100% accuracy for the entire fight where it matters (before no-splash update and Nakatra essences you had to reapply hammer spec start of p4 which was problematic for a myriad of reasons i will further explain)

Phase 2 was never hard

In phase 3 you had to tick perfectly juggle Telos inside the beam and balance his anima meter in the center, because at 3k+ enrages even the adren/prayer drain would rape you because it would drain the entire thing, which caused you to enter p4 too low adrenaline to be able to re-apply warhammer spec and also be able to chainstun, which fucked your kill because 1k+ Telos is all about not letting him autoattack more than 3 times in p4. At 4k, you really don't want him to AA at all because if he hits you for one of those 8ks, you're gonna have to burn through a lot of food/adren to deal with tanking the font and golems.

Now with any style it doesn't matter because you shit out so much damage with all the current powercreeped options that the timer-based adren drain/explosion spec never happens, so you will always enter p4 with plenty of adren

High enr P4 telos used to be one of the most mechanically complex things in the game. You had to know how NPC pathing worked to wrangle golems properly, you had to ice barrage swap to wrangle them further, you needed to rotate defensives and stun immunity from red golems, you needed to ss flick and use golems for hp sustain, you needed to know exact stun timings, and then you needed to be able to know how the timings worked on Telos becoming targetable again in order to bind the golems at the right time, AND release your detonate almost tick perfectly into a chain stun in order to keep Telos from ever autoattacking and keeping your HP healthy throughout the whole phase, because due to switchscape you only had like 6-8 slots you could use for food so all food use had to be used very sparingly

Necro can once again just volley of souls insta phase telos to the next font twice, while also having a 5 second stun spec and no need for adrenaline management while throwing out 15k finger of death nukes, while being much tankier without a zerk aura and having overly strong. The only mechanic they still have to deal with is using sticky bombs to break Telos' freedom timer before using said 5 second stun.

And then lastly P5. Before, you had to have a solid overall rotation through the whole thing in order to deal with the virus, rockfalls, taking 8k max hits from golems off prayer and 5k max hits from telos on prayer meaning flicking was a must. Shittons of things to keep track of simultaneously, super complex rotation involving 50 different actions.

Now bone shield trivializes the entire phase because you can now dive into green beam without even having to bladed dive switch, reflect to deal with most incoming damage while you set up a damage ult, and then barricade without ever switching to an actual shield so you dont lose any dps and then you'll just burst Telos down before your cade has ended without ever having to care about the virus, rockfalls, or the fact that Telos would be hitting you for constant 5ks through prayer while still having to kill him and while dealing with wrangling or kiting golems.

In the case for necro you dont have to worry about getting killed by golems either due to lack of zerk aura, and necro's burst dps is so high and braindamaged as a rotation that you can unironically revo the entirety of p5 with just 5 abilities.

When they instituted price controls and removed wilderness pking I got bored. Chat also felt a lot more moderated and tame by then. By the end of 2009 I was only logging in for holiday events and by 2012 I had stopped logging in entirely.

I started OSRS in 2015 but stopped playing in 2022 when it had become increasingly censorious and the devs started heavily altering Old School elements at the behest of ESG investors without polling players. When I need my nostalgia fix I sometimes play OpenRSC and 2009Scape, both of which have community servers that are typically pretty chill. They reduced rune smithing level requirement half a decade ago, primal the new highest levelled smithable armour.

There certainly is a lot more content; F2P is basically a trial that you can keep playing. My personal recommendation is to complete all f2p quests before deciding if you want to get membership. If you want to continue progressing at that point, membership will be worth it to you.

I'm at the point where I can fairly easily make enough money in game to maintain membership through bonds, but that would be a massive chore for most non-endgame pvmers.
