Beyond has made me realize just how many solid ideas were buried under the dogshit presentation and system mechanics that the mod fixed. The DLC characters are ALL fun as fuck, especially Sigma & Venom. Even Widow who I loathed as a pick is one of the most versatile and fun mixup characters I've seen in a long while.

Yeah, I've always heard Infinite players go on about how it was a fun game if you got past the graphics and disappointment with the roster, but I just never got around to it because it's a pretty big install for what'll just be a discord fighter that's inherently harder to draw people into.

Trying it now, I've been enjoying it a lot. Granted, some of these characters I didn't play in MvC3, and I wouldn't know what balance changes they made, but I'll just say that in 5min of playing Nemesis, I was immediately and naturally drawn to wanting to find corner rocket loops and tentacle/rocket active tag confirms all on my own in training mode. It's been a while since I've played something that makes me immediately want to go looking for sauce.

Nemesis is my main in 3 so he's actually kind of weird to go back to in Infinite (same with Hulk but I actually don't like playing Hulk pre-MvC3 either, just that one iteration) but he is really sick and I do mess around with him. I run Sigma/Venom mostly but I've done some Sigma/Nemesis and labbed out a bit of other characters. Widow I've surmised is cool as fuck but way beyond my execution level. Really my biggest issue with the roster is how prevalent Ultron & Gamora are when they're both really fucking boring mechanically (Gamora much more so) and Gamora also just generally being a shit choice even among Cosmic Marvel. I also remember them basically shipping her with Hiryu in the story mode and that was also cringe.

Slayer has hella mix, it's just relatively low reward unless they fuck up or you have resources to burn
P-Dandy whiff Under Pressure on their wakeup lets you meaty either 2K or It's Late for a true unreactable high/low, or you can dash through them and c.S for a very hard to see left/right, or you can BDC Bite for an invincible command grab that beats mashing. He's one of the few characters that can do real 4-way mix instead of the usual double 2-way like a left right that if you block then becomes a high/low like what usually gets called 4-way, he can represent 4 different options that require 4 different responses.
The downside is that off of it on normal hit without meter he gets like, c.S>f.S>c.S>2D for ~60 damage and for all the options he has, their defensive options like DPs and backdash and blitz and throw still interact with a lot of them so he still has to do a lot of prediction unlike the setplay characters that just put something on top of you and run mix. The upside is that when he does predict, or you gamble and lose, you fucking explode. You can throw the meaty 2K but if you try it and he does IL you take 200 damage instead 60. And even if you don't do anything risky, he's building meter and after two or three low reward little knockdowns now he can RRC for a big combo instead of a little one and that makes the mix terrifying on its own.
But yeah he's still really good at baiting out counterhits too.

4 limb combat, one button for each arm, one button for each leg. R1/R2 are high low blocks, L1 is special attacks (L1+Punches or kicks + directions) and R2 makes punches hit body and kicks hit legs.

Is Street Fighter 6 actually good? I like SFV and have been playing that for a while, but I feel I wanna play 6 more. I think the artstyle and UI design of 6 is disgusting, but the game looks more interesting. I'm really not a fan of the V trigger shit in SFV, to be honest. SF6 also has way more players. Is 6 actually worth playing? Is it a good game, or do people only like it because they have shit taste?

It's a good game for sure, it's from the team that worked on the last couple seasons of SFV to make it a very solid game by the end rather than the trainwreck it was for its first 2-3 years. The Drive system has a lot of nuance to it even with Drive Rush clearly being the most overtuned of the bunch, buttons don't feel as stubby as V, Critical Art is a much less extreme comeback mechanic than the last two SFs had, and Punish Counter is a really smart workaround for the issues counter hits have had in terms of design for the SF team in the past. If you like late-SFV you'll like SF6 unless the reason you like V is the massive roster with tons of costumes since 6's content pipeline is oddly dry if you don't engage with the side modes (though World Tour is a fun little distraction).

That said I'm also someone that doesn't mind 6's look that much; some clashing between proportions and textures with the animations aside I like most of the models, and while the UI isn't amazing I like it more than V's which seemed way too much like squeaky-clean eSports bait.

I actually tried playing CF when it got rollback. I mashed in bb games before, but in arcade mode or story mode only (except CT one random match online lol). Played kokopuff, but if I go back I'm picking up Amane. Don't know if I will though. Don't really feel like fighting vets in a fighter I don't have much experience with right now. God, COTW fucks so hard. I had my doubts because I played Real Bout 1 and found it kinda awkward for me to just jump into, so I wasn't sure if other Fatal Fury games were for me (and I had yet to wrangle my buddy to play Mark of the Wolves), but COTW is just so damn satisfying to play. Granted, the greater mechanics are lost on me at this point, as I don't really fuck with the REV mechanics beyond "SPG = Can Do REV Blow" and "REV Blow = Hyper Armor Move" and don't really touch the REV Meter. It's just fun playing wtih the fundamentals.

Also, absolutely LOVE that the supers are relatively tame, at least for 2025 standards. Power Geyser being just the super flash, Buster Wolf just being the closeup, and I've yet to see anyone use the big cinematic Hidden Gears.

Well, you can still do a lot of that. f.S and 5H are marginally slower (and with f.S, marginally shorter), but are also sizeably disjointed. 2D isn't disjointed anymore but is way more safe on block, which easily covers changes made to 2H to make that more useful at long range but more locked into being long-range.

I mean sure, the problem is more that Strive as a game means that Faust isn't as easily able to turn those pokes into big confirms without Counter Hit or Meter, but to say that as if it definitively discredits the entire playstyle does too much to diminish just how crazy item-based zoning with meter is now that there's a lack of item lock.

I don't mind you being a 17yo Strive player, but please don't talk about things you don't understand. If you spent five minute in training mode in +R or Xrd trying to convert off of f.S or 2H at max range you'd see how fucking stupid what you're saying it.

Faust's identity in the old games was an agile zoner with godlike pokes who continually filled the screen with small neutral wins via item throw. His ability to combo off of long range hits has always been limited, just like most other GG characters. What made him fun and distinct was:
- using FD to air brake by cancelling the startup of j.2K for stalling or changing his jump air, notably with j.H as an air-to-air (because of the tension penalty for using FD, this meant he would practically never gain meter from the button he pressed after doing the FDC)
- FDC j.K being a semi-reactable to unreactable overhead depending on your execution (which led to a plus-on-block divekick even if it didn't combo)
- adapting to the situations caused by items to advance and take space, or improvise combos (bombs, mini-Fausts, mini-Robo-Ky in +R)
- being forced to change where/how he looks to poke with a long lockout item on the screen; throwing food means that f.S/2H > item throw is no longer a free neutral victory (although in +R he has reverse gatlings from both those pokes, weakening that part of his identity)

Strive Faust is a walking tiktok reel who vomits out items and runs the same strike/throw/shimmy as everyone else because that's all he can do: FD cancels are gone, his movement sucks just like everyone else, and his suite of items has been cut down to a mere handful. His items are all interactable as well, because ArcSys was terrified that a new player would be too stupid to appreciate the nuances that people had been appreciating in GG for 20 years.

I fucked around a lot with Marvel. Seeing if I could get a feel for MSHvSF/MvC, whether I could find players for MvC:I, and just sitting around labbing in MvC3. It's a shame there's been nothing to fill its gap in the last 8 years. There's just nothing that quite plays the same.

I also tried getting into MotW now that CotW is out, but I just don't really jive with feint canceling. The lack of a resource cost (as far as I'm aware) to using it makes the addition feel arbitrary, and as a new player, the lack of a distinct effect makes it hard to tell whether I've failed to do it right or if my string didn't continue just because I'm fucking up my inputs in some other manner.

Modern can teach you the raw basics as training wheels if you're super super new, but I'd pick up Classic since it's better long-term and will teach you to play the entire genre. Hell, since you're looking to get introduced to fighters as a genre absolutely play Classic since most fighters don't even have a Modern controls equivalent. I think Modern can get you started on the wrong foot; I'd much more recommend playing it once you're settled in with Classic and think Modern would give you a specific advantage on a certain character.

A nice, well-rounded shoto like Ryu can be a great starting point. Characters like Marisa and Honda are also very simple and easy to understand. I'm a Honda main myself and can vouch for his Sumo Headbutt being a very effective punish tool that can teach a new player to capitalize on the opponents mistakes and learn to spot openings when they're available. Ultimately you should play who you find fun though, since that'll be what gets you passionate about learning and improving.

And as the other Anon said, yes, combos aren't very important at all; learn some basic tiny combos you can always rely on and then focus way more on fundamentals instead.

Have a blast, Anon, and good luck! SF6 can be criticized a good bunch by people but ultimately it's one of my absolute favorites; I adore the game.

imo classic feels better because you have fine control over your entire moveset and motions are fun, modern being "easier to learn" is in some ways a spook. anti-airing is a massive hurdle for new and even some intermediate/even experienced players, so being able to do that in one button will make that a lot easier. in other ways button layouts are weirder and more unintuitive and you'll have to learn motions for certain things anyway.

Third Strike is probably your best option for now. If you're curious about more, I'd consider looking into SF2X and Alpha 2 on Fightcade as well. USF4 is pretty good and has a huge roster, but it's also pretty dead and its netcode can make it harder to find people. SFV is kinda okay if you've got all the characters, but your main obstacle there is that nobody wants to keep a 45GB dead fightan installed.

SF6 is actually kinda worth it if you're willing to burn the money and get in now, but I assume that's not the case.

Options are limited for good intro fighting games right now, unless you're willing to fork over some dosh. If not, I'd say Granblue is pretty decent if you don't mind that you're stuck on a character rotation with the free version. Otherwise, it might be worthwhile signing up/waiting for 2XKO, if you're wiling to stomach the anti-cheat and such. Beyond that, the most lively free fightans are those hosted on Fightcade, where matches can vary wildly from super casual to ultra busted, so keep that in mind.

It's fun enough, that's what it is. It's by no means serious, but it's certainly enjoyable. There are a decent number of people playing online, but I don't really play it much, so I dunno if they're the kind of people that have learned to optimize the craziness to the point of no-fun

Honestly what >>1888977 said. SF4 and SF5 are great fun but man you just can't fucking go wrong with Third Strike if you're liking it. Can confirm SF6 is a joy to play though. SF5 is piss cheap on Kinguin still I think; it's like 10 bucks for a champion edition key if that means anything to you. USF4 is less than 2 bucks too there if you so want, but again, finding people to play with might be tricky.

Trying out A Few Quick Matches since it came out today. I wouldn't recommend it too much, since the platform fighter genre is pretty fleshed out these days and you can find meatier options with more characters for free, but I like how some indie devs are trying to tackle that space of just jumping on to play something simple for a bit.

Like I was hoping something like Counterpick Labs would fill the same space, but that game overcomplicated things and is super duper dead.

Not particularly. They're fine releases, but the player counts are abysmal.

If you have money, pick whatever's new and popular that looks cool and get it on sale. That's genuinely the best place to start. If you want to start playing fighting games for free, consider Fightcade, but know that a lot of the playerbase is gonna be South Americans and Middle Easterners that are playing to win.

USF4 is a bit iffy to get going. In my experience, the public queue is usually empty and lobbies are pretty hit and miss. It's also kinda hard to as easily play with anyone, as while the netcode is serviceable, it's the old form of online where your inputs are increasingly delayed based on latency to keep you synced. The gameplay itself is solid, even if Ultras are a kinda hrm feature, so it could be fun if you have fighting game friends.

SF5 is a little better off when playing with randos, even though there's actually fewer people playing it online, but a lot of the people playing it are those that are diehard stuck to the game, and could end up really frustrating to play against as a first-time experience. It's also a pretty big install at 45GB. Honestly, if that isn't an issue, I'd probably lean more towards recommending Tekken 7 over SF5 as keys for that are similarly really cheap.

Otherwise, the best bet is still to stick to the newest game. SF6 does have a demo and is $30 right now, but if that's too much then It'll probably start getting $20 sales after the current season ends.

I haven't tried one of the small ones, the size seems kinda annoying to me, but the full size ones are good for the price. Not a premium product or anything obviously but the open source firmware it uses is excellent, it uses keyboard switches which are pretty much all better than traditional arcade buttons, and the layout is either standard or standard plus a bunch of extra buttons so there's nothing wrong there.
They're a bit flimsy and the usb-c port is finnicky on some of them but you can fix it with a little right angle adapter cable if it disconnects when moving, and you need an adapter or a first party pad to plug in to use it on console, but they work fine.

But I've hated playing randos in fighting game online modes for a while now. Sometimes I think, what is the POINT, y'know? And without it being a tournament with some prize at the top, the main incentive is to network to find people you can play with on a hopefully more regular basis. It sucks that fighting games in themselves offer very little to enable this outside of some basic bitch profile view and friend list features.

The most unique thing about the air movement is that there aren't really direct anti airs, with a couple exceptions, you don't want to try challenging air attacks with a hitbox because it usually won't work out in your favor, but if you can avoid it you can punish the landing, or intercept the startup with an air to air because air counterhits have full untech time until they hit the ground.
That's why people say the game has "air footsies" sometimes, there's a common interaction where someone will jump aggressively, the other person will jump up to meet them, the first guy is afraid to push a button in case he gets counterhit and just doublejumps to back off, then the second guy double jumps to avoid getting stuck underneath him and it feels kinda like jockeying for space and looking for whiff punishes in a grounded fighter, kinda.

Little bit of both. Ever since the "rule" of no-generals got quietly removed, every one that was too dead to stay on /vg/ moved here. Doesn't help that they also don't adjust their posting habits, meaning they'll remake threads even when there's nothing to say except schizos bumping each other.

Stuff like that's always why I've personally always distinguished /vm/'s long running threads from them. Like there's a difference between a full-on general and a long ass or recurring thread.
