Welcome to /vm/abinogi. Mabinogi is a fun, once popular little old school Korean MMO from 2004 based around Celtic mythology with many different features. Your character can age, rebirth, eat food and gain weight, play and custom make music, and so much more. You can be anything and do anything all at once with no downsides. From non-combat related skills like cooking, tailoring, blacksmithing, trading goods in a commerce, carpentry, etc. to different styles of combat like melee, magic, ninja, archery, puppetry, etc. all on 1 character.
Although graphics and gameplay is still a bit dated, even after 28 years the game is still rich in content such as fashion contests, cooking contest, jousting, playing in or viewing large concerts, training pets, and so on and continues to be Nexon's most generous game.

Is it worth buying a blank demo staff off the AH?

If you have or want to make a bard set however the ceiling for magic's damage is about double and astrologer 1.3~1.4x what it is now.

What's an entry level archery set look like?
>>1810547Celtic Royal Crossbow from Chronicle npc in Avon which opens up after you do generation 12 storyline, before that just use Blaanid crossbow, use Blaanid's armor or anything better you manage to pick up until you get a Bohemian set put together.
You will want to use blue special upgrade stones on the Celtic Royal Crossbow since early on, and even quite a bit later in game max damage with bows is too low for red special upgrade's critical damage bonus to do equal average damage to blue's flat damage bonus.
From that point you can either jump to Bhafel Hunter Bow+Huntress arrow as a decent upgrade, or hold out until you can craft Demolition Breaker Bow+Arrow which is a significant upgrade and will get you through most of the late/endgame content. Demolition also gives you magnum shot enhance set effect so you can start investing more into some gacha set bonus light armor like imperial knight or shadow reaper at this point, but you mostly want to prioritize your weapon for progression.

Magic, Battle Alchemy, and Battle Astrology and to a lesser degree Puppetry shine early game and fall off later.
Warrior and Archer are decent early and scale better in the unobtainium tier endgame, Lance falls into that category too but will get a big buff in a few months.
Gunner and Ninja should do alright early with their recent buffs but are very lackluster in higher level content, Chain Slash is similar but has much slower skill animations and lower overall dpm.
Fighter is entirely single target and will struggle in content especially early on but it's one of the best single target boss dps options still with lots of investment.
Music is just buffs and Transmutation isn't really "combat" but they threw it on that page since it has a couple skills that can do damage.
Hope that brief summery helps, but don't worry too much about it you're free to use what you like when you like for 95% of content.

I don't know, man... EK having to worry about getting hit by attacks in melee range while DD can keep attacking from a distance and not interrupt their dps, plus having an easier time bursting down Irusan and Glas makes them seem pretty strong to me

DD is a more burst with shadow flare but people forget JUST HOW STRONG THUNDER BLIGHT IS AS BOTH DAMAGE,DEBUFF AND SKILL DAMAGE AMPLIFIER ALL IN ONE LOW CD SKILL. Along with that you cast and spam spells while it on and DD gets chain casting and pierce for free by having magic attack which you cap with just skill ranks and a fewer enchants. DD by far is much easier to play and gear for and still majority of the player base can't even get its skill rotation right and can't manage their dorcha!
AS is middle of the pack while not needing as much technical dodging and movement tricks like EK or dorcha management of DD its major down side is the huge gear investment archery is. Archery is on of the most costly skill sets to build for and by extension so is AS because its highly dependent on reforges and piercing to amplify its damage. With archery currently AS you get damage bonus for being at distance from the whatever your attacking so unless you playing like a retard YOU should not be dying.

The problem is back then they would at most throw four to 6 mobs with aggro cap of 3 or 4 at you due to skill load times. its was much simpler rock paper scissors combat back then/exploiting the very basic ai. Now they throw 24+16 mobs at you in single room with 0 aggro cap so your only option CC or burst as many down as you can. I hated the removal of skill load times to make the game faster pace because to me mabi was not about clearing content as fast as possible it was about tactics and strategy not twitch reaction time. A lot of new boss endgame content is like that I admit with a mix of reaction based dodging but the core has fundamentally changed.
Most of this adivce does not fucking matter and only applies to end game content though as you should be powerful enough to take on most things.
