OG is back (down) after the latest update. Vintage Story updated, ron' fucked his game and pretty much nothing changed. Multiple servers down for the time being. Some people are setting up new temporary servers until weekend and OG are back.

It is on 1.21, so far in the tradition something is always broken. We had a restart day and moved worlds to fix some stuff only for animal spawns to be broken and most mods underprepared for the update. Still had a lot of fun settling the outer rings of the inner earth with the gang!

Updates are unironically game breaking especially if you have any attachments to your current world/playthrough. Almost to the point where it involves having to restart fresh. From What I've read it generally takes them a month or two after an update release really to fix incompatibility issues hence the ron hatred so regular servers can actually retain current builds without having to start over.

If you're comfortable with a tiny bit of VM usage (tiny) I would recommend Hostinger's AMP panel VPS. AMP does 99% of the leg work, but if you need it you have full root access. Best of both worlds out of the box.

The largest known meteoric iron tool to exist before the advent of iron smelting was a dagger. It's unclear how exactly they worked meteoric iron products then, but they were limited to grinding, filing, and cold-forging, potentially with some annealing. Things like swords, shields, or full iron tools didn't exist in the bronze age, or if they did were wildly expensive considering iron exceeded gold in value at the time.

So, prior to smelting, iron could be worked, but not in the way you're suggesting, and certainly not with a sophistication that would make it much more useful than bronze.

It would not be realistic to craft the types of tools we have access out of iron prior to smelting it. Even if you're just making something small like a knife, there's no way at present to model that considering methods like cold-hammering and annealing aren't in the game.

The whole process is a tedious than anything else. Anyways:

You make a refractory furnace (use tier 3 brick) and a stone coffin. Slap the coffin inside and fill it with wrought iron and charcoal or coke. Put the lid on, and then underneath the coffin on your little shelf you stack fuel (charcoal, coal, coke, doesn't matter). It helps if you chisel a little lip to keep the fuel in. Light it and make sure the doors are closed. It'll take roughly an in-game week to finish, so you'll need to make sure you're feeding it fuel (160 charcoal for a single batch). Don't worry if it goes out since you won't lose carburization progress. You can pop in and check the coffin progress anytime you want too.

Once it finishes, pop the coffin lid off and work the blister steel on an anvil like a bloom.

i'm making a 7 block radius tower and i'm torn on which style of stairs to use. this isn't necessarily a home, just a place to eventually add a windmill on top, add an upgraded forging area, add some display halls and trophy rooms, aesthetic garden collections, etc so it needs a good balance of space, looks, and not being too much of a pain in the ass to get up and down

if it were you would you go with a spiral staircase in the center, or an alternating wall-to-wall flight of stairs? if i do go with spiral staircase for the extra space i also tried a 2x wide flight with a walnut skirting around the whole thing but it was just taking up way too much space

tule is probably the most useless retarded plant and addition in the game seriously. it's already just as hard to find randomly scattered about as cattails - it takes about as long to cut them, and it's 1:1 plant drop - and they take days to grow back. grass literally pops up everywhere, regrows in half a day, sometimes lets you harvest from the same tile twice, and while you may need more hay than thatch the amount of tule you can even find is pretty much guaranteed to always not be enough

2 water reservoirs and an alembic are a must, you should also have access to both puddles in the wetlands and one in the cave there, make sure you also wash yourself as often as possible with sea water (preferably having a container of it in your hut if you don't live by a beach) to lessen your thirst rate, that should get you through the dry season just fine
if things get really bad, you can drink nipa sap found in the mangrove forest

better way to keep a supply of meds is to grind herbalism at the start until you unlock the crop plots and then plant them spider lily and other helpful herbs as soon as you can

Storms only matter in areas next to the ocean, as in the travel times between them will be longer and items stored there may get blown away, inland they don't really matter all that much apart from having a chance to damage your hut's roof if you have one
living in the grassland cave is totally fine, but it always spawns with a monitor lizard so if you accidentally get bit while trying to run away it's almost GG for you if you're still in the early game

that is true, you can overhunt certain animals and they'll go extinct, but you need to be really dedicated to actually do that, it takes large animals around 10 days to reproduce
if you overhunt something but still keep a pair in the pen, you can release their offsprings and they will slowly repopulate the island
honestly don't really worry about it in the early game, kill every monkey you see and use log traps often until you get your combat skills up
fish, seagulls and molluscs are infinite

I initially thought it would be cool to set up a base inside a redwood forest because "COMFY" forest canopy, but it turns out the canopy is shaded enough that monsters just spawn constantly. The whole time I tried to build a house I was getting buttfucked by bone arrows and rocks and the monster from Stranger Things until I got fed up with it and moved all my shit to the grassy plains near the forest instead.
My base sucks and my farm is probably way too small eh? And now that I've got big supply of copper and brown coal I'm not entiiiirely sure what the next goal should be.
