I'll probably try it once the Japanese version drops but I have no intention of spending any money on it. This looks like such a cashgrab, Wonder is probably the only character design I like. The rest of the new characters look so soulless

No intention to spending money if it comes to the west. It's quality is really weird, it looks better than P5 and Reload by a mile in some areas, but then it has some very weak animations where it feels very unnatural. If they bring a dungeon creator then it will be top tier.

Persona, and in extension shit like devil survivor, was always better with its male characters if you ask me. Relatively whatever designs and usually not very good characters for the girls. Of course there was always shit like Ken in p3 as well.
But Akihiko, Kanji, Dojima, Adachi or Shinjiro? Even as a giga straight guy who really couldn't give less of a shit about male characters, I can only consider Rise even with those. And there's some massive "she's a girl" bias involved.

Late to the party but been pleasantly surprised by this game so far and I can put my bilibili account to work again too. Seems extremely polished so far, almost like a real game not some botched mobile port and it somehow runs well on my phone without making feel like it's about to explode. Also holy fuck I want to shower Tomoko with hugs and kisses while holding hands. Do any of the 4* characters stand out as being particularly strong? Kinda just using whoever and I can't really read Chinese that well but I can cheat with knowledge of JP runes and some 101 level understanding on Mandarin

In my personal experience, Closer and Onions aka Motoha and Shun, who are story characters.
The rest of the 4 stars are fine for early game weakness exploitation at best, like Mont, but feel noticeably subpar compared to the 5 star units.
Key and Sepia are considerably worse than Panther and Joker for example.
Still speaking from personal experience, Ruferu also feels very subpar despite being a story character once you have Morgana and Ann, who can perform his duties (healing and fire offense) much better.

If I get a time slot where, for example, I only get a part-time job or an important synergy like Tomoko's, Yumi's or Shun's and then I get 4 or 5 activities that do nothing of value besides raising an irrelevant social stat, and I'm close to hit an important rank on those synergies or I really need the money to buy gifts (because you might be on the last day of the week before the shops reset or w/e), then you might find it worth doing.
I only found myself in that type of situation once since I started to play though.

I got her to have extra support but looking at her skills i don't see much difference

In her trial I used Skill 1 and 3 with her and she made a noticeable difference in the damage Yamata no Wonder and Mont were dishing out, so yeah, she's definitely better.
Not a must or anything though. We're getting Wind along with Chord in 1 or 2 weeks, and Wind with a few dupes is also pretty decent and an upgrade over Okyann.
