My comparison was more about the desaturation rather than plot structure or anything else. I really would have enjoyed more AC if it had better color distribution like the original game, both in general look and the character's new costumes.

Cloud's weapon massively improves his own attack, but only his own attack, so it's good when he is the singular DPS being supported by characters who healslut and spam debuffs. Sephiroth's nonelemental buffs the whole party so when you have a secondary DPS you get more mileage out of it. Sephiroth's fire weapon is the best fire weapon but elemental damge is the most replaceable, creepable thing and when they buff Zack's 6 month gear it will probably wind up 90% as strong anyway, so I wouldn't do that one.
