Eh. the matches are very short; it's half an auto battler where the 3 player spams abilities with 1 guy trying to secretly kill the other two for an advantage in the second fight. It's okay if you've got 5 minutes to kill. The story seems really bland so far. It basically seems like FE1 but if Marth was a gay trap and everyone were furries and women. There is a light AND dark side story, but I haven't looked at the dark side's yet.

So far the only thing you really buy are cosmetics, and the battle pass for a character; the current one is Lyn. You might actually be able to slowly unlock lyn without the pass as the system for unlocking characters requires a resource which has a rare chance from dropping after a battle, but I haven't seen one for Lyn yet, so it's hard to say.
There is a resource you need to upgrade your characters which can use the gacha currency as a replacement if you are lacking, but the game doesn't tell you this and you might still need the other currency. Both seem relatively easy to get anyways as they are unlocked by just playing the game.

I don't know if I'd say she's been powercrept exactly. Every "first hit DR" counts brave attacks now, and some units can inflict Schism.
However, I still think she's worth picking up, because she's eventually gonna get a refine (probably tame, but it could be something), and you can also get some pretty nice skills for her from HoF. Triangle Attack is still a pretty good effect to this day, even if it has some counterplay.

The OCs only exist to enable the story mode which in turn only exists to have more stuff to do for the mainline characters.
