OP is right though Galar is a linear path from town to town, every single town has a gym, there are no detours, and it repeats hop battle + sonia lore dump too frequently. There is no variety nor strong cast to make it at least tolerable.
The pacing of the last arc of the game is pure ass too. You start a tournament only to get interupted and then have to play hide and seek with Rose's goons who weren't established at all prior, then raid the tower which is just an elevator ride.
And we all know how bs Rose's motives are. Idk fuck this game man it reeks of cut corners and last minute changes

It's pretty funny how, in the past, people would typically look back on an older gen favorably as more time went on, get nostalgic for mechanics, the region, etc. We have people warming up to XY, ORAS, even some pretty devout Gen 7 fans.
But somehow this has never once happened to Gen 8, not the region, not the Pokemon and definitely not the mechanics. No one was missing Dynamax and no one has asked for it back either, you have more people looking more favorably on Z-Moves, even. And now with Megas back on the table, Dmax is all but forgotten and the best way you can get people to talk about it is trying to bait people into pretending it was good.
Shit's just crazy to see, Gen 8 really and truly was just the fucking worst from every aspect. Maybe they can re-use some of those G-Max designs for megas in the future, I think that's the best legacy Dynamax can leave for the series.

I'm convinced it just hasn't been long enough. People said the exact same things about gen 6 approaching the release of gen 8 and I didn't meet anyone IRL that actually liked gen 7 until 2024 when I met a bunch of freshman in college that grew up on it. Learning people genuinely thought the gen 7 games were good convinced me it'll never change, and I've already met a bunch of teenagers/college students that consider gen 8 to be the peak of the post-2000s Pokémon games.

I had the opposite view between those games. Gen 8 was at least fun to fuck around in because of how poorly scaled the wild areas were, plus the story was so stupid I played it three separate times just to experience all the shitty beats of the story for the fun of it. The only fun I had in gen 9 came from wandering the wilderness fighting Pokémon I shouldn't be fighting at my level. The story and characters bored me to tears and everything else outside the battles just seemed like a complete waste of time. I'd rather play a game that's so bad it's funny than a mediocre game that makes me wish I was playing a romhack or fangame. As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing redeeming about gen 9, whereas gen 8 at least has [shitty] substance with a cute aesthetic.

The SwSh DLC is fine though it's propped up by how underwhelming the base game generally is and for being a better realization of the Wild Area compared to the nothingburger one in the base game.
Avoid BDSP.
Both Legends games are good but know that you're not getting into regular Pokémon games. Arceus is all about exploration and catching Pokémon with little combat while ZA is the opposite.
SV is polarizing but worth checking out to see if you enjoy its brand of fully open world Pokémon.
