>leave a public document available with their work, which they claim is "old and unusable" for some reason.
>More than a decade later, someone else takes this work and within months creates a playable working version of the game

>nobody cares anymore because the game is finally out

Is this the most humiliating translation saga of the last few years?

The translation for the PSP version of Eternal Punishment uses the original PS1 script, with a few minor changes. It was "being worked on" for over a decade, despite the translation already existing in full, so a tiny group of nobodies got together did it themselves using 100% of their own code in the space of a few months. The original trannies went ballistic over this and so did other trannies in the scene, because they viewed it as "theft."

These people are beyond parody, I assure you.

Pretty much, yeah, but just to clarify:
>>Original fan translators stop working on game for 12 years with no communication
CyberWarriorX and SamIAm STARTED working on it 12 years ago, at first they were communicating but it became less frequent until Cyber disappeared three years ago.

The original thread on RHDN got locked by the mods two years ago because of his disappearance saying that if he re-appears they would re-open it at his request, even to this day it's still locked. In fact a new thread was started after all this mess by the other perform who was working with him.

>>leave a public document available with their work, which they claim is "old and unusable" for some reason.
To be fair it was. The Cyber was working on it publicly on github at first but stopped updating that and apparently forgot it exists until years later when someone asked how to use it (It was just a bunch of files and tools, not a patch file you can use right off the bat) and was told that he had done a lot of work since and that version is worthless and outdated and took it offline.

>>More than a decade later, someone else takes this work and within months creates a playable working version of the game
Seems he had no idea what the fuck open source and especially a GPL license was and when an archived copy someone had was forked as the basis for the new translation by a person called eadmaster he flipped his shit insisting eadmaster "stole" his work and demanding it be taken down. By the way in the site ead posted about this, SegaXtreme, CyberWarriorX had not logged in since 2017 and logged back in just to yell at the new translator about it... then never logged back in again. Also, the thread eadmaster posted about this in was STARTED by SamIAm back in 2012 and was also dead until after the one on RHDN was locked, most of it was brown-nosing by a guy called TrekkiesUnite118 insisting it's not dead in 2023 and 2024 until eadmaster showed up. SamIAm never replied there.

eadmaster had already released a version 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 by the time the news hit most sites and made people pay attention. At first the very very very few people still trying to defend Cyber insisted all eadmaster had done was taken an ancient copy and released it as his own since it was still incomplete and very buggy and outdated... those people mostly shut up when eadmaster kept releasing more and more updates until in less than half a year it had hit 1.0 and was fully translated and playable with several tweaks and updates, even an optional enhancements version (though this was just integrating an enhancement patch another person had made)

>>original translators flip out about this person not getting permission to use the work they shared publicly and suddenly release a short video of their own working version
Yeah, after Cyber's freak-out where pretty much nobody other than Trekkies was defending him (other than supposedly his own Discord server) on just about every site this news broke out he posted a video on his channel going "See? See? We ARE still working on it!"... he still insisted eadmaster "stole" his translation in the video description by the way, and locked the comments after everyone was calling out his bullshit in the video too.
Note that this was one of only two videos on his channel, the other being a video posted five years ago from another translation of his that was never finished and was dropped at version "Alpha 0.2"... screenshot included. The video by this point doesn't even easily appear when you search for Princess Crown Translation on YouTube over all the others covering eadmaster's version by now.

>>nobody cares anymore because the game is finally out
Pretty much, everyone is talking about eadsmaster's version so much that just about all news from Cyber's version has been drowned out, and even the new thread SamIAm started barely has any posts, including none by Sam or Cyber other than Sam's starting post.

Yes, the guy who singlehandedly did more irreversible damage to translation and localization discourse than any individual before or after him. Tomato's dissections of various games and translation/loc practices, while interesting, has made a fuck ton of retards armchair experts who abused their false knowledge to fuck up FFVI beyond repair. Tomato is also directly responsible for the FFVI T-edition patch creator ceasing work on the patch since it garnered too much attention and he decided to fuck off (Squeenix also made efforts to try and kill off other romhacking/clone game communities in the same general timeframe for the same reason).

Basically, yes. He couldn't be arsed to do even that to prevent the thread from being locked and the project considered dead by even the mods. The only one still insisting it was still alive was TrekkiesUnite. The only other time CyberWarriorX had even logged into RHDN again was to post a "I am sad the site is closing" message when they announced their closure... and still didn't bother to revive his by then locked thread.

He literally only showed his face again the second news broke out about someone else actually releasing something, bitched for about a week, then disappeared again.

>>11791806
We REALLY need to push the mentality of romhacks being public contributions and not the equivalent of someone's IP, so much drama over people messing with "my" hack or working on a project "I called dibs on" and shit like this. Reminds me of that idiot who put malware/spyware on his Sonic fangame to prevent anyone messing with it and was blacklisted from pretty much every Sonic community over it.

I agree, so because Tomato posted a lot of details and examples about how translations work and ways people screw them up this is a bad thing because a few idiots thought this means they can become a translator? Anytime anyone does anything it makes some people think they can do it too, this is not unique to Tomato.

Why? There needn't even be a community. All it takes is a tiny team of one or two people (1 translator, 1 techie dude) to make a translation patch. You don't need to tell anybody you're doing it until you're done. You don't need anything from any community that requires you to share information about your project. If you're rich you can even just hire a couple of professionals to actually do a really good job for once. You don't ever need to even FIND OUT that you stepped on somebody's toes. Just make your thing in private and publish it, unless you're an insane idiot in which case yeah, you need to wallow in some bizarre Discord clan or whatever, but... in that case the problem is that insane idiots are making important translations, not that the mainstream mentality about fan translation is off somehow.

Most translations are not a 1-2 person project, and to get help you generally need to let people know you are working on a translation and that you need help with it. The only exception are groups that are dedicated to it but this is no longer the era of DeJap and so where such groups were common and constantly churning out translations.

On top of that, making it a public repo that others can contribute to can help move it along faster and improve it.

Even if people were doing it in secret, if there some some whiny attention hog they would come out of the woodwork crying about it after it's released anyway and you would still have drama. Would be better if the general mentality changes to it being public contributed group efforts rather than a group claiming "dibs" and then nobody else is allowed within a hundred feet of it even if it's been a millenia and the last communication was on a stone tablet saying "It's not dead!".

This was the exact state of the High Boo, Sling Shy and Muckle articles in a short span, and that kid took the bait and rob-ombed the wiki, 'relocalization' at work!
Super Mario RPG is..interesting.
>TCRF/MarioWiki member inspired by official retranslations keeps finding unused text differences offline, thinks it'd be fun putting them in hack, slowly accumulates but also intent on releasing final in one shot because he dislikes perpetual updates and predicts starving audience's kneejerk good reception wouldn't push him to improve
>same guy's incidentally involved in Dark Horse Mario Encyclopedia incident, stops updating SMRPG articles
>some kid inspired by FFVI hacks read Culex (superboss) Legends of Localization article, shadowdrops reworked-text that's just junk ripped from LoL & MW surrounded by fanfiction
>many (including 1st guy) basically tried to let kid down gently, deletes hack to rebrand it but controlcodes fight back and corrupt ROM, keeps saying he's going away and left the idea in more capable hands so RHDN thread is locked
>idea: why not just DELETE/IGNORE control/unused/obscure text and yolo mtl-playthrough? Stop Woolsey asap!
>kid secretly continues without telling guy after indicating otherwise, now collabing with TranslationQuest person easily impressed since she's the only RPG fantranslator in history to not play this game before, and again relocalized hack is shadowdropped
>right before remake announces
>around this time guy tries extending olivebranch but remake announcement causes rift, guy can't get through to kid because of TWITCH-STREAM dopamine, kid bluffs there's nothing else to do, exaggerating and inflating version number since senpaitendo might notice him
>guy gives up on RHDN community but still releases more or less what he has (Rebrick time-capsule AKA Wishful retranslation) elsewhere after giving remake space; it's several times its size, succeeding original goal of premiering tons of legit changes not previously seen on LoL or wikis (or kid's hack, or remake)
>then RHDN "dies"

I have no idea what you are even saying. But wasn't the Japanese version of Mario RPG absolutely loaded with pop culture references and memes that you would basically only understand if you had grown up in Japan? I don't see how you can translate those without making it just read like they are saying random nonsense.

Also Bazooka Toad is better than Lookout Toad. They fixed up Culex's lines at least to better represent the original Japanese version where he was talking about being 2D in a 3D world.

>But wasn't the Japanese version of Mario RPG absolutely loaded with pop culture references and memes that you would basically only understand if you had grown up in Japan?
Yep. The person who made the reworked/relocalized hack assumed that the game was old enough that the internet already did all of the hard work for him and that he can just rip everything from the wiki (neither SMWiki nor TCRF are public domain) because the RHDN community impressed upon him that Woolsey is the devil and must be stopped; the kicker is that the wishful/rebrick person actually might've put most of that stuff there, yet neither him nor the site got any credit just because he didn't share his view that Ted Woolsey is the Hindenburg of translators. Then after the remake released, he updated Mario Wiki and TCRF with a lot of info that he didn't want the "repocalizer" to steal too.
>Also Bazooka Toad is better than Lookout Toad.
Probably, but everyone agrees with that. I think rebrick also basically left it in except in the literal version.
>They fixed up Culex's lines at least to better represent the original Japanese version where he was talking about being 2D in a 3D world.
The remake's an improvement over the original in almost every way, but it still misses many smaller details and connections, like making Croco's wish more obvious, and a lot of comedic timing is lost like on relocalized. Pretty much all of the other languages do an even better job than the English version and do their own interesting little Japanese/English hybrid.

I know, that's what makes it even crazier. I guess because Princess Crown gained a bit of notoriety as being a cursed game that never manages to get translated so he wanted that spotlight? Going by the timestamps of everything Cyber didn't come out of the woodwork until after news sites started covering eadmaster's translation, which was at version 0.3 by that point, not when he first said he was doing it or on the release of previous versions. And he disappeared again right after the drama about the translation faded even though eadmaster himself kept working on the translation for months later. He lost his shit when the spotlight he was hogging for 12 years without releasing a damn thing was taken by someone who actually delivered. And he still has the gall to claim "I will NOT give a release date OR release a beta version" when asked about his supposedly superior version that he kept insisting was not dead.

Here's the proper romhack release etiquette:

1. Pick a game, work on it. Don't tell anyone until it's done.
2. If someone announces they're also working on it, let them know privately you're working on it also, and keep working on it regardless of what they say. Maybe let them work with you.
3. If someone releases theirs while you were working on it already, see if it's any good. If it's better than yours, your goal's accomplished already and you can stop and move on. If it's shit, finish yours anyway and release it.

I can confirm this method works because I've done it. It's the perfect way to do it. It's this simple.

it'll go unfinished for 10+ years and if someone else works on the same project and releases a finished romhack i'll get angry and start a bunch of pointless drama.
i'll then gaslight everyone into thinking i was just about to release MY "finished romhack" but since that other guy made his own romhack i can't release mine now and it's everyone else's fault for this situation.

The proper romhack release etiquette was already in place and was followed properly.

1. Pick a game and announce you are working on it so other people don't waste their time.
2. If you give up and cant finish your product and its evident that you are never going to finish it someone else can finish it and embarrass you.

Thats exactly how it should be.

I have no idea why he was brown-nosing that guy so much, he literally never finished a single translation, the only ones that were finished were a small handful in which he was just a minor contributor. Trekkies however has been involved in multiple big translation projects, it would be like Bill Gates defending some random script kiddie as if he was some kind of coding genius for managing to DDOS Reddit for 10 minutes and then never do anything of note ever again.

>1. Pick a game and announce you are working on it so other people don't waste their time.
I would argue that's not even relevant anymore. Maybe when romhacking and emulators were new to practically no fan-translated games existed, meaning everyone wanted games like Final Fantasy 5, Seiken Densetsu 3, Dragon Quests, etc to be translated and everyone would be jumping at them. Nowadays most of the big ones are done so the chances of stepping on someone else's toes is minimal. This calling dibs mentality likely had at least partially started because of this, but it's pointless now. There are a lot more fan translators now than the days of DeJap and so too.

The problem with this is that, unless you are a unicorn who can do both romhacking and translating, you need a team of at least one other person to finish a translation patch. Unless you are already well connected within the community, you can't find other people to work with unless you announce the project. For what its worth, most translation patches that are announced before they are released make it over the finish line without incident. All the attention goes to the cases with a lot of drama, so the amount of drama in the community gets greatly exaggerated.

It's fine to solicit help. I needed to do it at one point, but when I needed to I just e-mailed a romhacking group, I didn't do anything publicly. As long as you're just talking to other romhackers, ones you know to be sane people, you don't have to worry about it going public.

The second Wai Wai World fan-translation doesn't have the doc say "fuck you" anymore if you try to quit the game, but now two characters (I think Vic Viper and TwinBee, or maybe it was Konami Man and Lady) were renamed to the names of the fan-translator and their significant other.

Don't worry, that guy was only on the team for like a week before being kicked off for not knowing how to translate jack-shit and trying to do things like thinking that if you don't literally translate every instance of the word "kuso" into "shit" regardless of context than you are "censoring" it.

They left claiming they will make their own "uncensored" translation.... the github page of which has since been deleted so I doubt that is happening.

We're just going to get more drama as the well continues to dry up, but most people don't want multiple translations. This is why hackfags started adding qol in their shit, they're usually too thinskinned for the text to stand on their own and the tactic is to obsolete each other.

>a nip even told me that a lot of japanese people don't even know what a lot of their onomatopeia mean so i shouldn't worry about learning them.
LOL. LMAO.
Your first mistake is taking advice from native speakers who are going to tell you whatever they think will make you feel better about yourself.
Your second mistake is not realizing that there are shit tons of ๆ“ฌๅฃฐ่ชž and ๆ“ฌๆ…‹่ชž freebies everywhere you look which will give you a powerful memory to associate with them so that they aren't just random-sounding babble to you. Take Digimon for instance:
>ใ‚ณใƒญใƒขใƒณ -> ใ‚ณใƒญใ‚ณใƒญ (Koromon is a chubby, ball shaped creature that looks like it rolls around)
>ใƒˆใ‚ณใƒขใƒณ -> ใƒˆใ‚ณใƒˆใ‚ณ (Tokomon toddles about on its stubby little legs)
>ใ‚ขใ‚ฐใƒขใƒณ -> ใ‚ขใ‚ฐใ‚ขใ‚ฐ (Agumon bites away at meat, aguaguaguaguagu sfx ensue)
>ใ‚ฌใƒ–ใƒขใƒณ -> ใ‚ฌใƒ–ใ‚ฌใƒ– (Gabumon gulps down food)
>ใƒ”ใƒจใƒขใƒณ -> ใƒ”ใƒจใƒ”ใƒจ (Piyomon is a bird, tweet tweet tweet)
>ใƒ‘ใ‚ฟใƒขใƒณ -> ใƒ‘ใ‚ฟใƒ‘ใ‚ฟ (Patamon flap-flap-flaps its tiny wings)
>ใƒˆใ‚ฒใƒขใƒณ -> ใƒˆใ‚ฒใƒˆใ‚ฒ (Togemon is a prickly cactus)
>ใƒ”ใƒงใ‚ณใƒขใƒณ -> ใƒ”ใƒงใ‚ณใƒ”ใƒงใ‚ณ (Pyokomon bounces up and down a bit like a rabbit)
>ใƒ—ใ‚ซใƒขใƒณ -> ใƒ—ใ‚ซใƒ—ใ‚ซ (Pukamon floats through the air like a ghost)
>ใƒขใƒใƒขใƒณ -> ใƒขใƒใƒขใƒ (Mochimon looks soft and doughy, like mochi)
>ใ‚ฎใ‚ถใƒขใƒณ -> ใ‚ฎใ‚ถใ‚ฎใ‚ถ (Gizamon is spiky)
>ใ‚ดใƒ„ใƒขใƒณ -> ใ‚ดใƒ„ใ‚ดใƒ„ (Gotsumon is a craggy, rugged rock creature)
>ใƒกใƒฉใƒขใƒณ -> ใƒกใƒฉใƒกใƒฉ (Meramon is a sizzling monster made entirely of fire)
Obviously this is an extremely small selection of just the obvious ones you'd run into while playing a Digimon game or watching the early Adventure anime, but once you know them and remember something that evokes its meaning, you "own" them and have more free mental overhead to acquire ones that aren't so straightforward.
It's so obvious which Japanese learners are just fakers who don't actually engage with Japanese content on a regular basis VS the ones who make immersion the cornerstone of their learning.

Surely with the advent of AI there's some tool out there that autodetects text on screen and auto-translates it on a side-window with decent enough accuracy?

ai translators mess up a lot.
they're not completely terrible but they're not good enough to replace actually learning the language or getting an actual person to translate.

>original translators flip out
Let me tell you a secret that everyone already knows.
Remember the secret discord group who keept an old MMO world for themself? It was some random Heros MMO, game was shut down but someone took all assest, back engineered the engine and keept it for himself and a close cyrlce of fags on his discord.

Same goes with translation, there is a secret discord channel where the best games are fully translated but never get released.

It is true.

What I don't get about Vanillaware is that they have an audience in the West. Certainly the Kotaku thing didn't help them, but it used to. And with today's powerful algorithms, they could have had more success in the West. The ironic thing is that consoles hide their games. Odin Sphere (/vr/ approved), was hidden, barely appearing in the PSN search engine. How do they want to have good console sales when companies hide their games? They too, only released on Japanese consoles for their Japanese-only audience. Meanwhile /vr/ stylized western games inspired by Japanese games become best sellers. All this translation debate could be over if Akitami wasn't so short-sighted, and it's clear that he's still uneasy about his latest interaction with Westerners.

Anon is right: a lot of things are just phonetic sounds. For native speakers of their respective languages it makes a lot of sense. But for outsiders it's another puzzle
