They're too saturated, NES games look better in most cases. And the sound chip is awful. No one ever posts SMS games in music threads for good reason.

It does technically look better obviously, but there’s something about how a lot of Master System games look that feels so stock and boring somehow. This definitely doesn’t apply to all, I like how the Sonic games look, and the first person effect in Phantasy Star was pretty cool for the time.

its because the entire MS library is "NES at home"

No, they have access to larger on-screen palettes, which isn't the same thing.

Only a minimal portion of a much smaller game library actually managed to prove its technical superiority over the NES in any way (and I say this as a former Sega kid who owned and loved the System).

"In potentia" superiority not actually reflected by reality is a core trait of the Gen X and Millennial mindset, and probably of younger people's too by this point. They appreciate the victories they can get, even if they're basically made up.

NES had a way better sound chip, and most Master System games ran terrible because developers pushed out as many large, detailed sprites as possible at the expense of performance.

I think the Game Gear version looks even better, despite the cropped screen. The Game Gear is a enhanced Master System in a few different ways. The Game Gear can display the same amount of colours on screen as the Master System, but has a 9-bit colour palette of 4096 colours. The Master System is limited to 64 colours total and is limited to much more primary colours. I think the Game Gear has some enhanced diagonal scrolling and sprite flipping. But otherwise it is identical hardware.

I'll admit the SMS version looks pretty good up against the Game Gear version. But I still think the Game Gear has better looking colours overall. The Game Gear and Master System still displays the same number of colours. 16 colours for the BG layers and 15 colours for the sprite layer. The extended 4096 colour pallet really makes a difference in some cases.

i too think nes games look better in most cases, also agree that most sms games have terrible sound. there are some with excellent sound though, sonic1, and some other games too. not sure though, if this is about some kind of special chip in those games with good sound or if only few programmers knew how to make or bothered with making a good soundtrack for their sms game.
Anonymous No.11814451 [Report]

The SMS has an FM module, a lot of games do sound better with it. But you'll know immediately if it is using it.
Anonymous No.11814546 [Report] >>11814831
Yes, it was also released later than the NES.
NES still had the advantage and it's why it has tons of 3rd party masterpieces while most of Master System's best offerings are first party. In a way, Master System was a bit like the N64 of the 3rd gen, although even N64 had more third party games.
Anonymous No.11814831 [Report]
>>11814546
Well yeah, Nintendo required third parties to not work on the competition so that's why they didn't make games on SMS. I think it's a real shame, would have been fun to see more third party software.

Did you know Hiroshi Yamauchi wasn't actually a human being? He was a vessel that enclosed 7 yakuza oni spirits from 7 different regions in Japan. These oni monopolized the gambling in Japan with the hanafuda Nintendo cards and put a spell so that no other company could produce cards, truly evil.

Yamauchi, often referred to as "大魔王 ティラノ天堂" (Great Evil King Tyranotendo), tyranized the video games market with his monopolic practises, it is said that the Master System or the PC Engine didn't actually ever exist, and that they were invented time after so hide the fact that the Famicom was actually the one and only console existing in Japan.

>he doesn't have a pause stick
Anonymous No.11816053 [Report]
>>11815295
Well, to be fair that was common then, many people kept their consoles nearer than what we're used to now, even the OG Famicom only had the buttons on the 1st controller, it wasn't widespread yet... though it's a shame how even in design revisions they kept this issue... except in Brazil with Tec Toy, of course. Tec Toy knew what they were doing more than SEGA themselves did.
Anonymous No.11816080 [Report]
>>11812897 (OP)
Let's suppose that's true. I'll grant it. It still had a fucking wire coming out of the side of the controller - one that's four feet long and no start and select buttons - just two buttons that'd you'd use for gameplay. If you want to pause the game - you better get up and and hit that pause button.
Also, look at that atrocious design. Really a poorly made block diagram and call it a /Power Base?

At least these days... emulation sort of redeems some of that by moving it your controller and not having to look at the poor design choices. So... enjoy your better colors then.

Also the only reason it never sold as well in U.S. is marketing and NES hype.

It's not that they are different, it's that the mega drive adapter does not provide the pause button that was on the master system itself. For most games that's fine but there are some were it is actually used for menuing.
