How did anyone get baited into buying a console made by a software company with zero track record in the industry and barely any gaymes?

I got one for Christmas of 2002 because my best friend and neighbor had one, and I'd go to his house and play Dead or Alive 3, Fuzion Frenzy, Halo, Jet Set Radio Future and Mechassault.
He was also a massive Sega fan so he had a Dreamcast and an Xbox for all the Sega titles released on it, and since I was at his house almost every day, I ended up enjoying those titles as well.
I pretty much liked every system that gen.

MS was a behemoth software company, they have made major games before like Age of Empires or Flight Simulator. They had some experience.
They bought established studios like Rare and Bungie. Had support from studios such as Sega and Tecmo early on.
Of course people could trust them when they had kind of unlimited financial resources and a giant brand name. MS even wanted to buy Sega, Nintendo, EA, Square and Midway back then.

The answer is in your picture, it was Halo.

Xbox as also the most powerful one, it allowed you to play PC ports which the other consoles could not do (it basically was a PC you plugged into your TV). At the time technology was limited and Console gaming was decidedly different than PC gaming and PC gaming was expensive. The Xbox brought a new and popular experience to console, online FPS multiplayer and did what it's competitors couldn't. This was also a bad thing that set in motion the decline of gaming leading to endless cowadoody slop and culminating in a complete homogenization of everything into shit like Fortnite, etc.

But it DID launch with Halo you weird cunt.

Maybe you're a zoomie but I'll bite:
>Fusion Frenzy
Highly beloved then and now. Great party game
>DOA3
Self explanatory. Hot chicks, good mechanics and amazing graphics.
>Tony Hawk 2x
A better looking and expanded version of a game people already loved.
>Munch's Oddysee
Shit game but the public didn't know that yet. Oddworld was still coasting on the strength of the PS1 games, so many people wanted to play its newest 3D entry.

Pretty good launch lineup all things considered.

I've never once posted on /v/, so I have no idea what you're even trying to say or to criticize
it's obvious from the things you say that you weren't there in 2001, and posting a picture of some old consoles literally means nothing on a board where people routinely discuss obtaining/collecting old consoles. I'm not sure what you thought that image was gonna do for you.
Basically you're not that bright, almost as though your brain still has some developing to do. Because brother, if youre pushing 40 and still too dumb to realize nothing short of an original receipt is gonna prove you owned those consoles in 2001, you've got much, much bigger problems than winning some dumb 4chan argument

Congratulations on having an interest in games you didnt play back in the day, because you weren't alive?
Like, do you not understand basic logic? Nothing you've shown at any point actually proves what you want it to.
I actually really hope you ARE a larping zoomer, because if you're pushing 40 and you're still this fucking stupid, that's fucked.

This anon makes a good point. New consoles back then were exciting. Not sure calling "new" ones that have released in the past decade or 15 years smart phones makes sense but they aren't as exciting because they all are basically homogenized for the most part. So it becomes a power game. Any that lack power or games quantity will largely be ignored. Its why I think Nintendo is still surviving. They go out of their way to be different from Sony and MS and they also have a huge history behind them with loyal fans.

It will be close to impossible for a new brand to come in unless one of three stop making consoles altogether. Looking like it will be MS that stops first here. I assume at that point Sony and Nintendo will become even more powerful and whatever tech company tries to break in after a MS exit is going to be even more of a distant third then even MS currently is. Wouldn't be surprised if we see MS team up with another company and put a lot less into the hardware side of things. Rebranding or ditching the Xbox brand at this point might even be a wise decision. If MS were to team with Sega they can just pretend its a new Sega console. Meanwhile MS is fronting most of the bill, the online infrastructure, game pass, etc.

Back to OP's point. I liked the OG Xbox. It was exciting and did in fact provide something different from PS2. Different enough that you do miss out something. GC/PS2/Xbox all provided enough noticeable differences and games to be worth owning. Wasn't really until last gen this especially started to become meaningless with Xbox One and PS4 largely being the same fucking shit.

The other thing was the graphics, the Xbox had otherworldly good graphics at this time. The Gamecube looked amazing and even stepping up to the PS2 from the previous generation was completely mind blowing but the Xbox was next level and it could generate larger world/environment sizes too. At the time it wasn't only about what games it had, but what it could do. Gaming wasn't fully modern yet.

i wanted it for fantasy fantasies but i was poor and the latest FF for it wasn't out yet. it has Unreal Tournie, but since i had a shit PC that can already play Unreal demos with crap settings, i wasn't impressed by the release date lineup.

The console looked cool. The branding and console UI were cool. The graphics were better than the other consoles. A console doesnt need a huge amount of games to be worth buying if there are enough to make you feel you got your moneys worth out of the console. People point at the PS2 but it had an obscene amount of filler shovelware games inflating its library because the licensing to do so was so cheap and the vast majority of people with a ps2 all played games from the same pool of like 100 games despite there being like 2000 titles or whatever in it. Arguably the vast majority of ps2 owners really just played form a pool of like 50 games, shit like tekken gta, metal gear solid, god of war, etc. so from that standpoint the GameCube Xbox and ps2 in practice really had around the same amount of good well known games so you couldnโ€™t really go wrong buying any of them. it probably was the last console gen to be like this. If you bought a Wii you got tricked. you would have had more fun with a ps3 or an Xbox 360. Then by the time the Wii U came out and the Xbox one and the ps4 and beyond every gen arguably you might only want one console or none at all. Today you have the gimmick switch machine and you have the Xbox one x and the ps5 which hardly have any good games themselves.

The dudebro audience was necessary to keep the gaming ecosystem grounded and fun as long as it was. They may have played different games than you but they were not the audience targeted or in mind with all of the shitty choices and changes which happened to videogames in the last decade+. Lots of the older dudebro meme games are franchises from the 2000s still were fun games in their own right even if it wasnโ€™t something you yourself would play with your superior taste with whatever IP or genre you claim to be better than what they liked. When I think of the dudebro archetype I think of a guy who expects the game to be cool and to just work without any bullshit. Even if that means itโ€™s just a racing game or something like snowboarding or COD.
