I enjoyed it. Is it better than the og, nah, but if you’re a fan of the series it’s worth a playthrough. This and melee is the only reason I got a gamecube at all during that gen.
Anonymous No.11839936 [Report]
nah, the jump from 5th to 6th gen was huge. this is why people were begging for an FF7 remake a few years after it came out.

LCD monitors replacing CRTs is the only reason remasters became so popular
>dude this low-effort remaster looks like how the game did in my mind back then!
after trying to play the original 480i release on a 4k monitor that is lazily upscaling it and not realising it looked much better on the old family crt that is currently rotting away in some landfill

It is really shocking how terrible that remake looks compared to the original. No detail at all. Common problem with remakes is they have some B team or outsourced studio that doesn't give a shit.
Anonymous No.11840142 [Report]
>>11840130
It's less that they don't give a shit and more that they are either underfunded/given shitty deadlines for the job or just plain untalented and thus cheap to hire. Occasionally you will get some studios that aren't necessarily untalented or on crunch time but think it's a great opportunity to put their own spin on things which usually ruins what people liked about the originals.

Can you articulate a single reason the remake is actually bad other than the fact you are 50 years old now, played the PS1 original and like it more?

Like why wouldn't you want a good remake with updated graphics? Plus this is on the GC, Playstation got the major MGS releases as exclusives. So if you had the GC you could still play this and if you wanted a remastered version of the original on the PS2, well I guess you couldn't. Plus this game was overseen by Kojima and Konami, it's not some jank bootleg remake. Opinions like this are baffling.
Anonymous No.11840487 [Report] >>11840501

>with updated graphics
The problem is that the remake looks worse than the original. It may pack more polygons and effects, but it's uglier and butchers the atmosphere. If you take a look at the comparison and OP and you don't get it, I'm afraid you'll never get it, little soulless man.

I never got this. I think the original is *the* best game ever made. Understand that the PS1 hardware is limited and things like fog and such are to reduce draw distance. The original is a little bit darker and I'll give you that but it's also a bit subjective. Some people may find the better graphics and abilities like first person to be MORE immersive than the original.

The remake looks similar to MGS2 visually.

???? The original one also had PS1 texture warping and low resolution textures plus short draw distance. Look how blocky and pixelated it is. The remake uses cleaner textures but to say there is less detail is flat out wrong.

I can understand liking the grittier look of the original, I like it too but honestly I never even noticed until this thread. But saying the remake is pointless is retarded.

Honestly I feel bad because it's like I'm talking shit on MGS1. Really I'm not. The GC version does have a cleaner visual style but it lacking detail is false. I think the PS1 version is timeless, classic, original but the GC version is a good game and definitely not pointless.

like you can at least argue that FPS aiming and other MGS2 mechanics breaks MGS1 but the "muh cutscene" argument is just a retarded hill to die on when you consider all the bullshit that came after MGS1.

The controls are weird. I’ve played through it 2-3 times and would still constantly press wrong buttons. Every game prior to 4 had odd or bad controls, you’d think a remake would at least try to improve them but they somehow made them even more awkward.

Plus the commonly cited cutscene problems. Back flipping off a rocket is dumb but the one that irked me the most is when Snake is eavesdropping on Liquid outside the keycard room on the top floor of the Rex hangar, he does a somersault over the door frame just to change cover from the left side to the right.

>Snake's whole backstory is completely outlandish.

>And he runs around in cardboard boxes
It's definitely "video-game-y" to carry around a human-sized cardboard box in your pocket, but that's appropriate for a video game. It's no different from any other video game where the main character carries around a truckload of weapons and items in their pocket. As for hiding in a cardboard box, that's not even all that ridiculous. If you put the box in a suspicious location, guards will even come over and kick it off you. If you were sneaking through a building and saw a refrigerator box you could hide in, would you refuse to do it because it's just too silly?
>and is dubbed by the most hammy VA ever
So? Hammy VA means he should be a superpowered rocket-flipping anime man? It just completely negates his very real function as a straight man to a cast of clowns?

No no, you're thinking of breaking the narrative immersion of watching a movie or something.

No, the immersion breaking was the gameplay that the player has that caused the outcome of the game to unfold.

That cutscene nonsense totally breaks the player immersion. The super CQC shit with the cyber ninja, the previously mentioned rocket hop. The player can't do any of that shit, and the outcome seems tied tot the idea that those things happened that the player had zero input on.

This was before QTE were more common in gameplay, which aren't a perfect solution, they're more like a holdover from Dragon's Lair gameplay, but its slightly less immersion breaking.

Its good that nintendo players who may not have had a ps or ps2 got to experience the game, but the ps game is a better experience.
