PS2 games usually look better than Gamecube by a significant degree (which has too many dry, flat looking games.) PS2 is full of beautiful particle effects that wouldn't even come close to being surpassed until GPU particles went mainstream two generations later, and even then tanked with transparency effects the PS2 powered through at 60fps.

PS2 games can look really amazing if the developers put effort into it and know the possibilities that the hardware offered. Games like SotC, MGS3, GoW1&2 and GT4 look really good and still hold up. Multiplats often looked so generic and ugly.

PS2 is capable of some visual effects that weren't possible on the OG Xbox. SH2 for example, even though I think the shadows were better on Xbox and the game had a higher resolution also ended up losing some fog effects IIRC.

Just think that resident evil remake only could be ported to ps4 because no other console was similar to gamecube in raw power, and that says a lot.
Did ps2 hold back that gen, yes it did it.
It isn't it looked better or not is a matter of looking the games that only got trapped on gamecube take the gamecjbe bloody roar you can fool people and tell them is a ps3 or ps4 game and people will believe the lie without qualms or second thoughts because look far superior to any bloody roar or tekken on ps2.

True, they are lazy ports, but there's not some hidden seam of pixel shunting awesome hiding in the GeForceMX2+a-bit that the xbox was using that would make it render transparency at a rate even close to the PS2. nVidia is the king of GPUs because everyone else gave up, not because they were the best. Their cards were always lacking in some area, but by virtue of being the 800lb gorilla in the space they set the standard for what PC graphics could be. And it leaves porters with a big ol' problem to solve when they run up against those limitations.

We can't say the same for the Xbox and GC.

The system was actually pretty good for the era. The progressive output looks pretty bad on a modern TV, but in fairness, over half of the Gamecubes made aren't even capable of component output, and the system has compressed textures and lower quality audio on a lot of games. IF you have a Gamecube that can take component cables, and IF you could find a set (considering how rare component cables are for the system in comparison to Xbox and PS2), then the Gamecube will look better than PS2. If you have a cucked Gamecube that can only output composite and S-video, or you live in Europe where none of the games supported 480p, then it's a moot point. That's before we talk about completely fucked ports on Gamecube like Hitman 2. I actually like the Cube, but it's a supplementary system to PS2 or Xbox, more than it is a viable choice as a primary 6th gen system.

How did the Xbox? Most of the games used the black and white buttons and remapped L1 and R1 to the triggers. It also had both Start and Back (glorified select). Racing games used the triggers too, making them Xbox racing games better than their Playstation versions, generally.
