this is pretty much the only way to beat virtua fighter 2 in arcades. they released it knowing that fact very well.

The AI had serious problems trying to respond to it. Worked in SC2 too, but the AI was a bit better about dodging it.

Honestly, I feel like after the initial wave of Street Fighter II and MK every fighting game ever made committed to making bosses blatantly unfair and cheap. Like in MK1 where Goro was mildly cheesy to MK2 where Kintaro engaged in blatant input reading and had impossible counters and was so rigged that the only viable strategy was to lure him into the corner and and stunlock him which wasn't even something they intended so much as they overlooked. Or fucking Azazel from Tekken 6. Blocking *while* attacking should never, ever be a thing.

I feel like fighting games would be a less niche genre if you could still enjoy them as a single-player experience. But instead you try to play through fairly and eventually find you've been given an impossible task and the only solution is cheese strategies where you find the loopholes in the AI and spam one or two moves. I mean...why? So you created a boss who cannot be beat by normal means and forced players to play like AI. Congratulations. You made le heckin' epic legendary boss. And all you had to do was break the fucking game and make it a miserable experience. Assholes

I know the nips have a masochistic streak but there are acceptable and unacceptable iterations of that.

Like, having to do the same repetitive task until the RNG smiles upon you is tedious as fuck but at least the numbers say the thing will happen at some point. Having to memorize enemy patterns and react with perfect timing can be a lot to ask sometimes but if there's a window and the player has the opportunity to react the it's merely difficult and maybe a little unreasonable but not flat-out impossible.

An enemy who waits until you in the middle of an attack then respond to it instantly with an unblockable counter that you cant possibly react to or predict? An enemy who can initiate a grab that is literally instant and works 100% of the time? Who never has to drop their guard? That's not a difficult fight, it's an execution. If the only way to "win" your boss fight is to get murdered over and over again until the 1 out 1,000 times where the AI has a brainfart and leaves an opening it shouldn't have you can fuck off. Stop giving bosses win buttons.

I've played through many fighting games and seen many unfair bosses, and if I actually cared enough for the game to play it as more than a quick tryout I've always managed to beat them. Either by finding out how to cheese them or just playing good enough rounds.
But the one bastard I never got down is Johann from Rage of the Dragons. I have never seen such bullshit in my life. I recall this piece of shit command grabbing me right out of a super.

But that's my point. If this is common in fighting games then the entire genre is bad, at least as a single-player experience. Which it kinda is. And the solution seems to be to just tell everyone that the whole point is really PVP but if that's the case then why not just make singleplayer mode more enjoyable instead of some insurmountable challenge that .0001% of players will ever finish? The PVP experience isn't contingent on bosses being bullshit hard so why not just make them fair?

I agree with you though, the fuckery with SNK Boss syndrome went on for far too long.

I know this will never happen, but It's my dream that at some point these old fighting games will be decompiled, ported to PC, and someone will fix the trash AI and replace it with something more akin to VF4 Evolution AI.
I love the look and aesthetic of 90's fighting games, I wish the only way to enjoy playing them wasn't to hop on fightcade against humans, because I like a good arcade mode in general.

This move gives bosses across several SNK games an aneurysm. The AI will try to perfect counter it, but it can't take into account the delay between execution and active frames, so it'll do some shit like fireball on reaction and get hit 100% of the time by the high profile.

only if you zone the AI to force it to dash in. If you do that, you can get a throw in for free. Only problem is that you have very few frames to do it, so complex throw commands (ie. the really fun ones) are right out.

you can cheese the game with Akira by doing backdash twice, dash forward once while the AI does it too, then 1+D+P and then do whatever as a followup. it's the most fun against Wolf because he tends to try to grab you as well, which results in a throw counter that puts you behind him, and his response to that is a turn punch 100% of the time allowing you to practice Akira's counters. If you do it against Dural, she'll immediately do a turn punch after the switchup throw, so you can practice counters there too.

buy if you think SNK has garbage bosses wait until you try to beat the Eternal Champion. It has input reading, will drain you out of your spirit meter so you can't use any specials (but he has infinite spirit), and has 5 lifebars each with different moves.
