Any games that kind of look like this?

Preferrably RPGs.

castle of the winds. first roguelike i ever beat, and still one of my favorite games of all time. unfortunately, you'll either have to emulate windows 95 or get a wrapper to play it on modern systems, but if you're on this board that shouldn't be too much of a barrier

I wish games would still do this. You have way more control over screen configuration, you can more easily run certain programs over the top of said program (like shaders) and I think it looks classic.

Not sure if it works for that particular game, but you can try otdvm:
https://github.com/otya128/winevdm
It allows modern 64-bit Windows to run 16-bit Windows programs. Might work for most of the games ITT.
If that doesn't work, the other option would be to install Windows 3.11 or Windows 95 on DOSBox or 86Box, but that's a lot of work for only one game lol. There's packs with Windows and a bunch of these games preinstalled floating around, though. I made one such pack, if you're interested.

The ICOM MacVenture games — Deja Vu, Uninvited, and Shadowgate — all got Windows 3.x ports in the early 90s.

And yeah, this kind of interface only works with a limited number of genres: RPGs, sims, strategy games, adventure games, and puzzle games. Once first-person shooters took over PC gaming, the native point-and-click UIs quickly died out.

I wonder why this trend never stuck, at least for point-and-click games. I guess developers wanted the look and feel of their games to stand out, but it feels like they’d slipped back into the DOS era, before PCs had anything resembling a standard, unified graphical interface like what the Mac had had in the preceding decade. It would’ve benefited their games to fit in with the rest of the desktop (including stuff like menus and shortcuts) instead of trying to be a special snowflake.

MDI was an abomination, and the reason it existed at all on Windows was because Microsoft was too dumb to recognize the superiority of having a Mac-style system-level menu bar that would obviate any need for MDI’s clunky confusing desktop-within-a-desktop paradigm. Windows today is still a UI trainwreck largely thanks to the lack of a menu bar.

If you're the type of autist that likes strategy wargames you should like it, it's not only just building armies, you also control characters from the og trilogy and the expanded universe with different stats, which can be sent to a variety of missions. You pick the Alliance or the Empire, each with slightly different goals and starting resources, and you start not knowing what the ai opponent controls, so you start by using espionage and reconnaissance to see whether unexplored systems belong to it or not, then you build your fleets and recruit characters to expand your influence through force or politics until you meet your faction's victory conditions.
The board game is good too, although simplified for obvious reasons, but you need a second autist to play against.

On my old Mac (early 90s), I used to have a game that allowed you to produce and market your own movie. Basically this focused on managing a budget, but included the ability to pick actors and a director. The end goal was to get your movie to rank in amongst the other top ten well known, best selling movies.

The way the game worked was that you set budgets for your movie, putting a certain amount of money into marketing, and what not, and then released it to the masses. As the weeks would go by, your score would be determined by how much of a net profit (or loss) you ended up with.

It was non-graphical and ran in a windowed mode like ITT with gameplay akin to something like Dope Wars.It was well done and surprisingly fun to play.

Anyone know this game ans what it was called?
