>Games where people who don't play through all of it miss out on good music
If you're not trying to destroy the machines in the past to listen to the good future music why the fuck are you playing the game?

Because those mechanics make the game even more tedious. Even Sega themselves knew this and that's why they still let you get the best ending just by collecting the time stones

I think it adds another layer to the game. I like time traveling and searching for the machines. The only zone that didn't work with the time traveling mechanic was Wacky Workbench which is the only thing holding it back from being a 10/10 for me. It's not for everyone though.

>good future music
It fucking sucks, I purposefully avoid the machines because the bad future is just so much better.

This is literally what made Sonic CD go from nothing special to me... to one of my favorites.

My personal narrative replaying it is that "you win some, you lose some" and the good ending depends on getting the Time Stones.

Some technological modernism is necessary.

The real reason is because the Taxman version, which is the one most people played, removed the timer reset mechanic when you time travel. So you just run out of time before you can travel to the future, or while exploring the good future level with the timer ticking at you.

This. It's not technically necessary but it makes it even better if you do
