The peak of anything Sega is found in the glory days of their arcade division in the mid 90s. Any other opinion is wrong and therefore discarded. Be less of a zoomer. There isn't a single Sonic game that belongs in an all-time top 10 of Sega titles.

Are you kidding? It was the last boom of platformer characters, and just about all were more popular and got better reviews than Sonic. This was when Sonic was falling in popularity, Sega itself died as a console, and right before Sonic became the biggest "lolcow" for about ten years from the mid 00s-mid 10s
>Crash
>Spyro
>Jak and Daxter
>Ratchet and Clank
>Sly Cooper
All kinda ate Sonic's lunch in this time period while he became "weird", when in the 90s he was second only to Mario's already massive popularity, but certainly considered the "cooler" or "less dorky" of the two

I liked Spyro as a kid, Crash is OK, but I'm not really a big platformer guy outside of Sonic and various shit from the 16 bit era like Rocket Knight, but Sonic is just one of those childhood things as a whole I don't really let go of because he was basically my hero when I was 4. Sonic definitely started to sink in reputation starting with the 3D games, and it got worse, then better more recently

I know because as a Sega kid I basically witnessed my first real sense of "defeat" as Sega crumbled with the Dreamcast and it pissed me the hell off

I think the reason why Sonic Adventure has been meme'd so hard even though it's a terrible game is that zoomers keep playing it - like legitimately the first "retro" game a zoomer and alpha will play is probably Sonic Adventure. Think about it. What other game would pull kids into retro games? Of course it would be this piece of shit game

Sonic got memed on and made fun of for so long during Zoomers lives, once they became teens/adults old enough to have nostalgia, it combined with the "post-ironic" culture they have where they love everything hated on like Limp Bizkit and Nickelback and Space Jam and The Phantom Menace, so the fact that they remember Sonic being a joke online, only makes them jerk off the 3D era more

And like, that's what it is, I don't hate the 3D era part of me is glad it gets more love now just like 3D Mortal Kombat, but when they act like it was peak Sonic, it's borderline offensive because Sonic was fucking literally coming for Mario's throat in the early-mid 90s, he was way more popular even if games didn't sell more

Iโ€™m not even really a sonic fan but always liked the game. In the 90s and 2000s I primarily liked starwars and halo videogames and stuff like doom and quake and ninja gaiden black etc. but I remember seeing sonic adventure on the Dreamcast on a demo kiosk at toysrus and being impressed by it thinking something about it seemed interesting just playing it briefly. When it got ported to the GameCube I had a good amount of fun with it. I donโ€™t think I ever finished it but would just replay random stages and explore around aimlessly. i also have never finished a Mario game. but Sonic adventure is a game that has a certain appeal to just explore and fuck around in.

Maybe the only way to save sonic from his fate is for masterchief to have opened up a wormhole during halo 2 and for sonic to have received his own spartan armor and after defeating the covenant sonic and chief would eliminate egg man once and for all. Finishing Sonicโ€™s fight as well. Sonic would also say something like โ€œfuck you.โ€ Before shooting egg man. Masterchief would then hand him a Mountain Dew and look at the player reminding them to stay hydrated while gaming.

i like the Adventure games, possibly love them.
but i don't defend them, i know what they are.

it all started around 1995. your only options for "new" Sonic games were 3D Blast or buy a Saturn just to play a little 3D segment in Jam.
Yuji Naka wanted to replace Sonic with an IP he had more control over, and so personally cancelled at least 3 different Sonic games we know about, in order to force SEGA to push NiGHTS. it didn't work.

so 1998 comes, and SEGA unveils their new "Sonic RPG," now called Sonic Adventure. because they realized abandoning their top selling, world famous mascot to the dumpster was actually a retarded idea.

but they waited too long. Naughty Dog had already eaten their lunch with the easy layup. and of course Mario had dominated everything and one. so they just threw everything in. that's why Sonic Adventure is a little bit of everything.
Sonic Adventure was born the moment someone in a room full of SEGA execs said
>Quick, what's a recent game we made that's doing well? SEGA Bass Fishing? Ok, put it in.
they didn't know what to do with 3D Sonic so they did everything. you've got a Panzer Dragoon segment, kart racing, whack a mole, minigames, all kinds of stuff.

i don't hate Sonic Adventure 2, but i do think 1 is the better game. everyone had already heard the word that the Dreamcast was getting axed and SEGA making an exit while development was still going on. so they knew it would be the end. they were still putting out screenshots after SEGA's announcement, the game didn't release until months later.
i think you can see the team's knowledge of all this reflected in the design. fewer gameplay types, less overall content stretched out for longer (way fewer minigames, no exploring HUBs, have to do levels 5 times instead of 3).

Sonic Adventure was SEGA throwing spaghetti at the wall.
Sonic Adventure 2 was SEGA looking at the biggest chunks that stuck and trying to make a whole game around just those.
