It's a mid game, honestly.

I play the OG SH2 every year, this year I'm playing with the over the shoulder camera mod to just change things a little bit.

But SH2R misses the mark. The cutscenes are inferior. They keep focusing on the FACE. They have a FACE MOCAP TECH so they NEED TO SHOW IT, which detracts from every single cutscene.

My issue with the remake:
-plays like every single other over the shoulder UE5 game ever made
-padded to hell and back
-is that a brand new room that wasn't in the original game? I wonder what is th- ammo and mannequin, repeat 10x
-the aesthetic is taken straight from the movies, not from the original game
-sanitized textures, they have no grunge grime whatsoever
-boss fight changes (every boss except for eddie roars now)
-seriously, the roaring is a real fucking problem, am I playing a generic fucking MMO? why is every boss roaring with particles falling from the ceiling?
-Maria's VA sounds bored (good as Mary, though, except for the letter reading)
-Maria is not sexy
-Maria is not flirt
-Maria is not Maria
-Absolutely garbage butchered letter reading and they removed important parts of the letter
-Angela's VA can't act
-Extra Angela scene to further show that Angela's VA can't act
-Laura sounds like the idea of a child written by a gen x/late millennial that has never interacted with a child before
-Awful cutscene direction

There's too much shit everywhere in modern games. Every location in modern "spook" games looks like a meth street in the USA covered in garbage and random clutter with wrecked shit all over the place. I like how clean and sterile a lot of the OG SH2 looked, it added to the sense of dread that this shouldn't be abandoned and full of monsters and made crawling into the filthy crevices finding out the insides of the buildings were dilapidated and diseased looking compared to how clean everything outside was that much more unsetting (and which was probably an intentional thematic choice since the game is about internal disease).

They're trying to show off the POWER of new consoles, which means adding more shit (grass, garbage, etc), which has the effect of obscuring important objects. Which means they have to fix this by adding yellow tape (yellow is a color that stands out).

Obviously, the original was also trying to show off the graphics of the new console, but it strikes a better balance of clarity of visuals. Part of the lack of debris is the fact the console is weaker, and they already had difficulty getting it to run the game as it was. But sometimes less is more? They lost something, lost the plot where they almost forget it's a "game" and they have to think about the player so sometimes being streamlined is a good thing.

Strangely, the remake has the *exact* opposite problem with interiors: too clean, too bright, too modern looking. I think the general look they were going for is that Silent Hill has been abandoned for a solid decade, so the buildings look abandoned, with water leaking in through the roof so it has significant damage and mold.

I'm kinda glad Team Silent didn't go for full third person when they made SH2, 3 and 4. I imagine it would have played just like those janky horror games on Dreamcast.

Some people probably feel more immersed with a closer, more consistent camera. Feels less like you're "disjointed" from the character perhaps? I wouldn't know though, I have always preferred tank/fixed camera. Just a guess.

I've always hated this, especially when it's anime because of the ye old "A-Anime website!" excuse. Just fuck off to the proper board it was made for. Anime's shit these days anyways and I don't see why the hobby outside of whatever's nostalgic is so sacred to this dying site. Also amazes me just how many on here are jacks of all trades yet masters of jack shit.

Graphical improvements really did kill videogames. Limitations and obstacles are what create interesting things and even art. it's like how movies have become total dogshit nobody even watches anymore once CGI came into its own. Pretty sad, but the indie scene is (slowly) closing the gap and as soon as low budget game development becomes something only mildly technologically gifted are able to do we should see an explosion of good nu-retro games which are currently being held back by the current gen of indie game developers being far too autistic and more interested in concepts/tech demos than creating truly great games.

Demon's Souls, and RE4 remakes both have the same issue of needless clutter which makes knowing what objectives and interactable objects seen very hard. Part of it is less talented devs, who don't "get' gaming, and see it only as audio-visuals, and think more detail = better.

More baffling is that RE4 and SH2 remake did the "yellow paint" horseshit which is extremely immersion breaking. FF7 had a similar issue of not being able to see objectives, and they fixed it with an OPTIONAL select button press to highlight exits. Why not bring this back? Yellow highlights with a button press rather than mandatory? Even have it turned on by default and an option to remove it?

I know the average gamer is a drooling moron but don't punsih me for it!

RE2-RE3, Sh2-Sh3, also had a simple solution of having the character just stare at enemies or objects of interest. For some reason, all these solutions have been lost to devs.

The yellow paint isn't for you or normal people it's all part of inclusive design. Stop thinking about yourself and stop for a moment to think that there is millions of people with impaired vision that also enjoy games. You are acting as if the original RE4 didn't have shinny glimmers to show you where items are because all the brown textures were melding into one.

I have vision issues but I still dislike visually cluttered games even if they have yellow paint. The issue isn't really the yellow paint but that the game has so much visual noise you have to block out and the yellow paint isn't alleviating anything, it's simply just more noise on top of it. I don't mind when a visually pleasant game has a glimmer on a key item.

Maybe it's more noticeable with modern games that have more detail so the issue is more apparent. But even with less detail, if it's all just a brown blob that still ends up feeling like the same kind of visual noise that is unpleasant.

Paint isn't the problem, it's how's it's used. It looking like it was downright clumsily SPLASHED onto objects isn't good level design and in REmake 4 and especially 7 Rebirth that it's so downright offensive it's comical.

Yeah even that just kind of seems to add to the visual noise too. By comparison a small glimmer isn't as obtrusive. A game I was thinking of is American McGee's Alice and how objects will float and sparkle and glow but it fits the setting so it doesn't feel out of place. And that game also has a lot of interesting detail so everything is generally pleasant to look at without wasting your time. In the original Silent Hill 2, James will turn to look at things and nobody complained about that because it fit.

I was looking up something about this and I see people repeating it's about accessibility and is a good thing but it just seems like nonsense. If a lot of people are disliking it then it's not accessible to them anyway.

>I was looking up something about this and I see people repeating it's about accessibility and is a good thing but it just seems like nonsense.
It mostly is a nonsense excuse.
Outside of shit like Colorblind modes, it's both used as crutch by modern devs/art directors when most vidya these days is so bloated with graphical detail that everything just ends up blending into eachother that it can be difficult to know what is/isn't interactable/destructible and, to me, be less gatekeepy, but mostly to casuals or people who don't play vidya.
The yellow paint meme's been used before in the past that it took me by surprise when I noticed instances of it in 7th gen vidya, but not to such a hilarious degree like today. I feel devs just opted for this type of environmental handholding instead of the already abundant handholdy features (waypoints, quest markers, sonar, etc. etc.) so they can claim their game's more "immersive" and "cinematic".

An autist said it better than me along the lines of "devs don't want their hard work to go to waste", so they have to string players along SOMEHOW so that they don't drop the game out of frustration.
