A thread about the fun machine, discuss anything involving the N64 here.
Have you guys tried the new update for Mario Kart Amped Up?
It added 3D models and more things, I also like that you can play the original tracks so you can use the QoL features and extra modes that the hack has.

Hoping for a recomp/decomp/whatever. Emulates ok nowadays but was a bit patchy a few years ago
>>11908704 (OP)I like the sprites better in this case.
>>11908704 (OP)That's a pretty cool hack. Impressive. It seems like a lot of N64 games left a lot of graphical capacity on the table.
The analogue 3D controller is out
Is $145 a good price for a refurbished N64 + 4 controllers + expansion pack? I'll also have to spend like $50 on a flashcart probably. I am kinda worried about the controllers since I heard the stick breaks down pretty fast, but since it's refurbished maybe they replaced the bowls.

>>11908824>another controller that misses the point of the n64 controller and you can't play sin & punishment on (and can't use any of the good control schemes for goldeneye)let me guess, the analog stick is also cheap modern shit with a range that goes from 0-100 with a small movement
>>11908906at least moderetro will get it right since they are autistic about accuracy
if i get a japanese n64 can i easily find a flash cart that will fit it?
>>11908962I'm pretty sure the only thing region locking the n64 is some physical plastic tabs that are easily removed
>>11909000yes, but my thinking was you had to file down plastic on a US cart to make it fit which sounds annoying and tedious to me.

>>11908906>you can't play sin & punishmentYou can use the Type 3 control scheme and it'll work. But you don't need a dedicated controller to do that anyway, and other games will absolutely be worse.
Do the $50 Summercarts on eBay work alright
>>11908962SummerCart 64 I know is region-free. You'll still need a non-JP power supply, though.
>>11908896Doesn't seem that bad but if you can get photos of the controllers pay attention to the analogs to see if they're loose or not.
>they breakThe only time i had a control stick break on me was with a really shitty 3rd party controller, and really, stay away from cheap n64 controllers because they're super fragile or have shitty analog sticks that make playing some games almost impossible.
Even buying a bluetooth adapter is better.
My Kitsch-Bent stick parts are coming in soon. Can't wait.
>>11908896N64 control stick modules will all breakdown over time unless you get metal bowls and sticks and lube them up. I would be more concerned with what they used to "refurbish" it. You can replace the original stick modules with all sorts of things. It's best to have OEM parts or reproduction parts. Kitsch-Bent makes decent reproduction parts and they're cheap and always available, but you need to DIY the fix. If you get controllers with OEM/reproduction stick modules, then buy yourself some Permatex Dielectric grease and apply it to the moving parts.
My fine, esteemed gentlemen of good taste and excellent discernment.
I suggest you all try Banjo-Kazooie: Nostalgia 64. It's a new romhack where the bear and bird go through like I wanna say 14-15 N64 games.
It's incredibly fun. Good love letter to the console as well.

Last N64 game you played?
I played Mario 64 from start to finish out of boredom, and a few weeks ago I managed to beat 007:TWINE
>>11909761F-Zero X
Trying to beat every GP on Expert
King Cup was easy, Jack Cup was kinda hard. Queen Cup has been the hardest so far. I think Joker Cup will probably be easier. Haven't even attempted the DD cups.
>>11909761>>11909763Jack Cup was harder than King probably because I'm more comfortable with the drifting strategy and those courses are usually straighter. Also Mute City AI in particular seems way more difficult than most other tracks.
>>11909724Incredible how this shit retains its value.
Is there anything like Sin and Punishment on it?
>>11909794yeah there's Sin and Punishment
>>11909794Rail Shooter?
Your other alternative are Star Fox 64 and Knife Edge
>>11908704 (OP)I've delved into the world of NES and GB+GBC emulation on my N64 this week thru Everdrive64.
Played Metroid. I really like the N64 as an NES machine, I wish its emulator supported just a few more games. 90% of stuff works great tho.
the GBC emulator that uses .gb and .gbc converted into .n64 has had 100% compatibility from what i have tested, I am stunned and grateful.
the N64 is my all-in-one Nintendo home console now since I never had an NES or SuperGameboy.
as for N64 itself, I have been playing Amped up! the models are impressive but I set them back to the default sprites (the models are kinda gross I'm just gonna say it). What really is great about that mod is the modernized drifting, tricks, and smarter shells and other fixes, paired with a host of new tracks and lots and lots of achievements and collectibles. Collectibles in kart racers is my weakness. That Litronom is a genius.
>>11910378With the N64 controller being 6 buttons, and the SNES emulator Sodium64 working like decently well with non-special chip games, I really wish there was ANY attempt at Genesis emulation on the thing. It would be really nice to have.
>>11910378iirc there's a GB/C emulator that doesn't need rom conversion but I haven't managed to get it to work on my super64.
Neon works great and so do Sodium64.
>>11910939I think a Genesis, SMS and a big maybe, a GBA emulator for N64 would be dope (iirc someone actually managed to have a Neo Geo emulator on N64, it didn't run well from what he said but the fact he got it working is already a feat).
>>11910950GBA emulation seems not so hard. Like if I remember correctly there was literally a PC GBA emulator on day one of its existence. PSP also emulates GBA a lot easier than SNES. So maybe it's possible.
>>11910950>>11910960I think the main barrier is probably just interest. Like who besides a few autistic freaks like me wants to emulate games on an N64
>>11910961I honestly like using my consoles as emulation machines more than my PC, I have my ps2 and 3ds with emulators, but playing something like Pokemon Emerald, Sonic 3 or even Metal Slug on the N64 would be super neat.
Maybe its the fact that it is possible to play it on a less powerful machine that makes it more interesting to play on.
>>11910971I agree, I feel like it's just really cool to be able to emulate shit on an N64. It's probably the earliest console along with the PS1 that actually has some capacity to emulate older consoles, and that's neat. I think the Wii and PSP take up most of that console emulation niche though since the Wii can emulate a lot of stuff while also having 240p output and the PSP is portable.
>>11908906If it's by 8bitdo then the stick is likely decent. Their hall effect module is pretty good for casual play.
>>11909228I got some kitsch bent parts a while ago and I was disappointed to be honest.
>>11909761Wave Race. Awesome looking game, especially considering how early it is.
>>11910378Which NES games didn't work? Are you using the FPGA NES emulator on the EverDrive 64 X5/X7.
The Game Boy emulator is good but IIRC it doesn't save, you have to use a save state instead.
>>11910961I say that I prefer real hardware but I don't mind emulating on a console if it works properly. I think I just like playing on a console and not on a PC.
Here's a great tip for improving N64 sticks. If your gears are still decent get a rubber O ring, about 1mm thickness and I believe 3mm diameter, then slip that around the bottom of the stick, just above the hammer head. It will lift the stick up and make it more responsive and feel buttery smooth, add some grease that isn't petroleum based. It won't be perfect but it might be good enough depending on what you're playing. I have a Steelsticks64 bowl in a decent OEM module and it feels and performs about the same, and that bowl cost a lot more than an O ring, and you can't even buy those bowls...
Any good alternatives for N64 power supplies?
>>11912552What was it about them that made you disappointed in them?
Best SM64 hacks that run on original hardware? (With Expansion Pack ofc)
>>11912547It is by 8shitdo, and people that got their preorders this week tested the sticks out, and the results are that it's more or less a gamecube-style analog stick that's way too sensitive for small, precise movements.
>>11912547>>11912969yet another stick you can't play f-zero on

This game is hard as FUCK
Got my new Kitsch-Bent parts in today! Four stick module kits with glow-in-the-dark sticks, two sets of gears and two clear sticks. Package was so light, they just put it in the mail. I set up the first batch of parts into my green controller and it was ugly. Did a little research and made some adjustments. She's working perfectly now. Can't believe it. So smooth. Definitely exceeds my expectations, which were admittedly fairly low, but I couldn't tell you what a 10/10 is regardless. Anyway, what I found out was the entire mechanism needs to work without restraint. The first time I installed the new parts my encoder wheels weren't spinning freely and it was preventing the spring from working properly. It turns out the tiny little silver screws used to fasten the stick module inside the controller match the diameter of the encoder wheels almost perfectly. I threaded the little encoder wheel holes with one of those screws, made sure the rest of the mechanism was working well enough, laid down some Permatex dielectric grease, put it back together and let it rip. When I got in-game I was getting just a tiny bit of drift, so I did a L+R+Start (apparently that re-calibrates the stick) and it fixed it right away. Couldn't be happier.
If you want to get your N64 controllers back in working order it's really not too tough, but there is a bit of a learning curve. It only took me three times to get used to taking apart a controller and the stick module. This is what I've learned. Be gentle with the screws and don't force anything. Hold the controller face down so the PCB and buttons stay put. Try to keep the screws in the same holes and don't let them lay new threads. Try to reuse the old threads when you're putting it back together because the plastic can't handle doing that forever. Use your fingers to keep a firm clamp on the plastic shell whenever you're putting screws back in. Don't forget about the two tiny screws inside the memory pak/rumble pak plug.
>>11912739My benchmarks with kitsch bent parts (pic related) were weak, which was noticeable in games. I had better results with
>>11912584. The stick felt very grindy even though it was new and had lube. You may you have better luck because it seems the quality varies, which is another reason I don't like them.
I had to carefully remove excess plastic from the gears for them to work, however the gears are the best part. I recommend those for rebuilding trashed OEM modules.
If I was in charge of Kitsch Bent I would improve the quality to match OEM and then up the price. Currently their parts are so cheap they could triple the price and it'd still be cheap compared to other options. Good OEM sticks are all that most people want. Speedrunners want steel sticks for durability and because you can tweak them for performance.
>>11913337To reuse the old threads you can turn the screw backwards in the hole until you feel it drop into place. If it's in the same threads as before it should turn easily. If you're using a lot of pressure something probably isn't right, but the screws can just be like that sometimes.
>>11908704 (OP)The N64 is probably Nintendos most cursed system ever desu. EVEN FUCKING TODAYS TIME,NS2 CARTRIDGES ARE CAUSING A HEADACHE FOR 3RD PARTIES AGAIN. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

I really enjoy a good working N64 controller. Something about it just feels good.
The beta firmware fixed everything for the analogue controller tested it myself and it definitely works better in games like Mario Kart 64 now

>>11908906Seriously. What does this controller do that all the other "Modern" N64 controllers doesn't? If I'm going to play Nintendo 64, I want to use the controller that was specifically designed for it and vise versa for games that were designed with the limitations of the controller. It's not like the original Playstation where you can get away with the same controller layout across generations.
>>11914035>I want to use the controller that was specifically designed for itThat controller is specifically designed for that too
>>11914038It's designed for modern gamer sensibilities. You can't play Golden Eye with this layout. Believe me, I tried.
>>11913941you're retarded
the console was awesome, remember when me and my bro used to play mario party all night.Over time, using the controller intensively hurt the palm of my hand and my bro's, in that sense the controller was crap and lowered points to the console, it still left me with many anecdotes and I spent many good times with it and my bro

>>decent>L M A OHave you actually used it?
>>11913634Did you re-calibrate with L+R+Start before you did your test? Were the encoder wheels spinning freely?

>>11914252No, but I'm not going to spend money on a brand that is known to have QC issues.
>>11914393m8 that was like five years ago. Their current lineup is rock solid.
>>11914364>Did you re-calibrate with L+R+Start before you did your test?It was a while ago but I think I did
>Were the encoder wheels spinning freely? Not at first, but I widened the holes and then they were.
>>11914393Don't knock it til you try it. I got one recently and it's pretty good. It has worked well with every game I've tried, not tried F-Zero yet. It costs like $20.
>>11913659A lot of my favorite hacks have "Unknown" compatibility, because I'm guessing no one tested them. I don't have my flashcart yet, so can you test this out https://romhacking.com/hack/star-revenge-625-luigis-adventure-dx and see if it works? It's my favorite hack. It's fairly complex so I'm guessing it doesn't.
>>11914703https://romhacking.com/hack/shining-stars-3-sanctuary-of-the-star-comet this one too
>>11914703>>11914808OK, I'll test those. I have an EverDrive 64 X7 by the way.
>>11914826>I have an EverDrive 64 X7 by the wayThe one I ordered is a Summercart but I'm guessing the compatibility isn't too different
>>11914865Yeah I think so. I tested both and they show grey bars and then the title appears for a second but it's all glitchy, pressing the buttons does nothing. The ROMs run fine in Parallel Launcher on my computer. So not console compatible.
>>11914693It works fine with F-Zero X
>>11914903Unfortunate but expected, thanks for testing
>>11914956No problem. I needed to put a few hacks on my SD card anyway.
Is there a third party/chinkware N64 Mouse? Would kinda like to use it with the Mario Artist games/F-Zero X Expansion Kit's track editor
>>11913778Just wondering for cheap alternatives.
>>11914686So are you using a program loaded on to a flash cart to do those controller tests?
>>11915294Yes I use this https://github.com/wermipls/mimi
my only good n64 controller is yellow. fuckin yellow. bullshit
>>11917312If it's good because of the stick you can easily move it to another controller. If your other controllers have unresponsive buttons you can fix it by cleaning the contacts and rubber pads with isopropyl alcohol on a Q tip. For the pads you just need to take the shine off of them, what comes off of the pad is black and it's not dirt it's part of the pad, so minimal cleaning is preferred to avoid wearing them down.
>>11917324You can also get new button membranes. I haven't done that yet, but I plan on it. I'll probably get them from handheldlegend.com.

>Was interested in trying this because it looked kinda cool
>Controls like absolute ass
>>11909724Abso-fucking-lutely not. A grey n64 with what looks to be no jumper pack costing over 100 is highway robbery. You're paying the average price of a special edition console. I can almost guarantee you do not need 4 controllers either. Please be bait.
>>11917541It has the expansion pack included, you can see it says Console(Expansion)
so N64 consoles just by themselves are usually around $70 from what I can tell, and the expansion pack is $50. OEM controllers are like $20 at the lowest. $70 + 50 + 80 = $200, so the bundle being $146 ($162 - the $16 discount) would actually save quite a bit.
>>11917546Yeah, that guy's retarded. $146 is a pretty decent price for all that. It just sucks you don't get to inspect it before you buy it, which is something I would pay a bit extra for.
