Master System
Favourite games? Any recommendation? Any homebrew/aftermarket worth playing?

What I've played so far
>Air Rescue
>Batman Returns (route 1)
>Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
>Cool Spot
>Deep Duck Trouble Starring Donald Duck
>Golden Axe Warrior
>Land of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
>Master of Darkness
>Ninja Gaiden
>Phantasy Star
>Sonic Blast
>Sonic Chaos
>Sonic The Hedgehog
>Sonic The Hedgehog 2
>The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck

I also played Shinobi and AstΓ©rix but got filtered towards the end, as well as Keisenden which seemed good but really hard. I tried the SMS versions of Double Dragon and SoR 2 and I didn't like them at all (even though the GG version of SoR2 wasn't bad)

We rarely talk about this system but since we don't have a janitor anymore I figure it's finally safe to do so without getting a month b& for "b& evasion" because he immediately assumed anyone talking about it was you know who

Lol that's a weird specification. I think it was novel how they gave you the chance of choosing difficulty per level rather than as a global setting. Any way, great game; have you played the GG version? It's basically a completely different game that merely uses the same assets.

Asterix is extremely good btw, easily on the top-5 system exclusives. Shame the sequel is crap.

The most obvious thing you're missing in that list is Wonder Boy III I guess.

Is the final boss of Shinobi even possible without health upgrades? The shots of the tornado guys are unavoidable
Anonymous No.11929430
>>11929383
Holy shit I did it after like 30 attempts. The tornado guy is all luck honestly, if he fires 3 shots at all 3 heights at the same time it's unavoidable. The final guy also takes a bit of luck depending on what he does, the best strategy is to get him stuck in a corner of the room to stunlock him to death.

ATM I really can't imagine doing the entire game in one go without using the level select code, between the pixel jumps, the statue boss, stage 5-1 and the final bosses... That's a lot to take in without using a continue. There are no upgrades at all in stage 5 btw all the children only give score.

>Shame the sequel is crap.

I'm at 3-1 and so far I'm enjoying The Great Rescue more than the original. Sure the sound design is lacking (sometimes inexistant) and the hitboxes aren't always great, but the mechanics and level design are more interesting than in the original imo. In the OG I disliked how the challenge only come from hazards, especially in the late game where it felt like 90% of the rooms were hazard/trap rooms. Great Rescue also has proper boss fights and the graphics are excellent.

I can't believe I used Fusion so much for SMS emulation, even when using the colour boosting setting all the colours look so dark and washed out; I like bright colours and it's the SMS's strength, and Mednafen provides that.

The only issue I've found so far with Mednafen is that the bottom part of the screen in Cool Spot would glitch so I had to use Fusion for that.

You defend three medics (think β€œlives”), but they’re totally different guys and the first guy is just slow at everything, the second guy is faster but takes naps occasionally, and the third guy is a hyper-competent ace at everything

It's been a while since I've played it, but I recall it being harder, and the fact it ditched multiplayer might make it the worst version for some, but for singleplayer it's the best one since it's fullscreen instead of only using half of it.

Secret Mission is slower and messier than first Asterix game and mostly derivative of it except for the occasional level gimmicks (which vary from memorably weird to plain obtuse) and the (2) bosses, but on the upsideβ€”and though it's still quite fever dream-ishβ€”it feels more connected to the source material rather than seemingly extrapolated from a one-page outline by people completely unfamiliar with it like the first one did lol

Technically it's easier since the toughest enemies don't pop until later stages and the play area is larger, but losing co-op absolutely made it an inferior version. Also, having to pause to see the map is a drag.

Okay I've beaten the Secret Mission as well. Overall I enjoyed it, it's just the platforming in Egypt that kinda sucks. It's obviously a lot shorter than the other two but that's from the fact that it was Game Gear game I suppose.
There are 3 bosses btw: Pirate ship, Egypt, and the end Roman boss

The Great Rescue is my fav of the 3

Actually once the statues are closer to you, when they reach the middle point of the screen, you have to time your shots properly, if you don't and just spam and shoot as soon as you can you're going to die because it the second shot will hit the enemy while it's still in its i-frame

The third Asterix game is kinda eurojankish even in its Genesis version but considering the second Japanese-developed one is equally mediocre you certainly can't single out that as the cause.

The first one is truly great though; even as a fan of Asterix I didn't mind how fucking weird and random it is because how downright fun and well-made it is.

Yep, no continues but the game is fairly generous with health bar and power-ups. You will die on your first playthroughs but as you discover health restoration/XP and get familiar with enemies the game gets easier.

That's why I compare it to Lord of the Sword, where the hero has a large health bar that's worn down by every mistake. Also a short range blade attack in common.

Yeah I actually I beat it earlier, it's pretty short and easy, too much so even, which is a shame because otherwise it has high production value.

I started up on Wonder Boy III afterwards, amazing game.

There's unofficial SMS conversions of these GG-exclusive games like Tails' Adventure or Sylvan Tale. Usually the mappers are all fucked up since the games aren't optimized to display a bigger view area than what was intended:

https://youtu.be/ssUfrl0mqO8

That also tended to happen with the Brazilian TecToy conversions of Legend of Illusion and other originally GG-only releases though lol
Anonymous No.11935898 >>11935925
>>11935764
It's general that's true at least potentially, but those Game Gear screens aren't really representative of that fact since the GG had a much bigger color palette than the SMS (and funnily enough also bigger than the Genesis'!)

No idea, it's such a strange decision.

Either avoid enemies with party-wide attack or use a stone that blocks magic.
Still, there are some cool ideas like the reputation or dual currencies. The grotesque monster designs is a nice change from the usual fantasy bestiary, too.

SMS Ghouls'n Ghosts had some cool ideas, and is fairly easy by GNG standards, but too bad it's pulled back by a poor technical execution. It reminds me of NES GNG and not in a good way.

A middle ground between Super Off Road and Micro Machines. Not great but any means and in singe player only the final round of 5 races is actually challenging, but must have been fun in multiplayer. Still a nice distraction from Micro Machines.
