That's a modern opinion. What happened was that classicfags started talking about the sanctity of the old design, not that the old design wasn't a cynical commercial marketing tactic, harkening to an artistic style that grew out of the necessity of the production line environment of cartoons in the 1930s. Adventure was also their cash-in on new trends, but it was never a bad design. Same thing with the humans in Adventure games, they fit better than the creepy ass cartoonish humans from Unleashed. That's fanboys going for the old good, new bad, and there were also Mario fanboys who piled on top of those criticisms, too, claiming the superiority of Mario's designs over Sonic's designs.

As the biggest garlord on this site i think SA2 is a fantastic game and one of the best of all time, SA1 is a terrible game an absolute piece of shit, Sonic 1 is an ok and charismatic platformer, Sonic 2 is absolute trash and Sonic 3 and Knux is decent enough but the blue spheres shit ruin it and Sonic CD is much more interesting anyway.
