Is this game worth playing? It feels slow, clunky, and quiet. The controls are tough to handle, and the pixelated visuals make it hard to see what's going on. Could the Saturn version be the issue? What’s your take, is this game actually good? Does it pick up after the first few levels? I don’t want to judge it too harshly, so I’d love to hear your thoughts. I know a lot of people seem to love it.

This game is hard as fuck, clunky, and downright terrifying at times. If you can get around the controls it's 11/10. I have a playthrough on PS1 every few years.

You are supposed to treat it like a 3D cinematic platformer I think. I never finished it back in the days

Saturn is the worst version, play the PC version with the Automated Fix

Exactly this, you don't play Flashback or Prince of Persia like a Mario game, same principle applies here.

I love the Saturn version but admitedly it's the worst version to play, it's more pixelated and darker. Play the PC version. You can also save anywhere on PC.

>You can also save anywhere on PC.

That's not a good thing

Save scumming ruin every form of tension or immersion

Play the PS1 version

yeah TR1 and 2 are fine without saving anywhere. TR3 though? Save at will, fuck that game.

I really like the shading from Saturn, feels darker and this works great for Tomb Raider, game should be dark. I stick to the PS1 version but would love to see someone work on the Saturn version and get more grunt out of it. Even turning down the draw distance to match PS1.

You can save anywhere in TR2 on PS1, it's not a PC thing.
TR1 had the floating save crystals that would vanish after one use and be your checkpoints.

That being said, TR1 consistently crashes on PS1 for me in one of the earlier levels, making it unplayable.

lol fuck me "quiet" being a criticism, people are so mentally third world they can't even handle silence in a videogame.

OP, save yourself the trouble and just play using the open source re-implementation of Tomb Raider for PC called TR1X, you can even enable the save crystals within it if you so desire, thank me later. ;-)

The dire lack of music and long periods of silence were a knock against it back in the 90s.

Yes, I love 2 as well and it definitely has improvements like more challenging combat; but the series lost a part of its adventurous feel after the first game.
3 is okay and anything after 3 is crap though so really it's only a matter of chosing between one of the 3 as a favourite. I hope the anon that claimed that 4 was a masterpiece never comes back.

The bigger issue is that they used red book audio or whatever for all the ambience, music, secret jingles, and voices are single audio tracks that have to interrupt each other and load into place before being played.

When the remasters came out I played and loved the first one but had zero desire to play the expansion or any of the sequels.

Really weird feel.
Anonymous No.11944139
should I get the remasters or the originals? They don't put the originals on sale anymore, but they're like 7 dollars a pop.

It's level 3 underwater city or something. I walk to the edge, back up, do a running jump, and she bounces off the wall and goes down a waterfall

Hard to tell from the screenshot but looks like the gap is only 2 blocks long meaning you shouldn't do a running jump. Walk up to the ledge, strafe to be against the wall so that you're as high as possible on the slope and do a normal jump.

Yeah, there are awkward jumps where you can't make it by grabbing the ledge so you have to just jump and not press X so that she ends up barely landing on top which snaps her up a few inches in a glitchy-looking manner.

There's a part is TR2 in these air vents with spinning fan blades where you have to make like 3 jumps in a row like that, and any mistake or attempt to grab the ledges means you get chopped up by the fans.

>Is this game worth playing?
Yes.
>It feels slow
That is deliberate. This ain't Mario.
>clunky
No, the controls are perfect and tuned for the slower platforming.
>quiet
The lack of music makes the atmosphere even better. You are raiding tombs.
>The controls are tough to handle
Git gud. The controls are perfect. learn when to run and when to walk.
>and the pixelated visuals make it hard to see what's going on
I guess it is a valid complaint.
>Could the Saturn version be the issue?
Saturn plays and looks like shit. Play the ps1 version.
>What’s your take, is this game actually good?
It is amazing and the best tomb raider 1 game behind 4.
>Does it pick up after the first few levels?
The first few levels are the best ones.
