I've recently learned an interesting fact about CD-i. Most rips of cutscenes from Hotel Mario have black horizontal bars on top and bottom, like the video segments were deliberately animated in a slightly wider aspect ratio. Well, turns out they are there only for PAL compatibility. On NTSC CD-is those bars are in overscan area, filling the whole screen with graphics. The bars are only visible on PAL machines since they have larger screen resolution.

It truly sucks that the shitty PAL version is the only version that's emulated properly on MAME.

PAL version is not shitty, it runs at the same game speed as NTSC. Philips is a Dutch company and they mandated that all CD-i software must be region free run at the same speed on both 50Hz and 60Hz machines. The only difference is screen resolution which is larger in PAL. For Hotel Mario it means that stage backgrounds extend further vertically but cutscenes are a bit squished and have black bars.

I see, my mistake. It's hard to get used to the fact that some consoles were made by yuros.

No biggie. Hotel Mario was developed by one of American branches of Philips, so it was most likely designed around specs of NTSC CD-i hardware. However, given how CD-i has almost no fast action games, you'd probably get a better platform experience overall with a PAL machine.

I hear that a lot with the C64. Having 10 less hz to deal with really makes a difference. It's crazy to me that it was created by Americans, but used FAR more by yuros!

Apologies for the poor reading comprehension. C64 wasn't a PAL system first and foremost, so I went off on an unrelated tangent.

Is the fan remake an acceptable way to experience the CD-i games? Been meaning to give them a spin
