Anbernic’s max fan noises are annoying in their recent devices like the 557. Also kind of sucks that they only really have two performance profile modes, low power and full blast. At least from what I’ve messed around with my RG557, hopefully they patch in another mode if they haven’t done so yet.
If you like playing games in 4:3 though and you don’t mind sacrificing analog triggers then you’ll be fine. The performance for retro emulation is equally competitive despite driver incompatibilities with some newer software like Switch, but that’s not /vr/

Also there are a few DS games that require you to hold the DS in book format, this only works well if both screens are the same size. DS is really the only device that will probably never get a well replicated experience because all those handheld makers always want to make a device that emulates everything well, but this just doesn't work for the DS.

The 3DS is quite the opposite in that regard. Because it has a clear main screen which is also not the touch screen pretty much nothing interesting was done with the 3DS and all games work perfectly fine if played on a normal device.

Trimui brick is good at it's size. It's well built and the performance is enough up to PS1. The screen is great and very bright so good for on the go gaming. There's a few caveats mostly related to the backplate: it's unbalanced because of the backplate and feels worse in the hand because of it. The backplate gets uncomfortably hot if you push it. Buttons are a bit small. Other than that it's a great device for 4:3 gaming at this size and price point.
DON'T INSTALL MIUI. It's a piece of shit that kills battery life and will cause the device to overheat and possibly die because the sleep functionality is broken. Install crossmix os or wait for the next version of MUOS later this month that should bring support for this device.

It's unreal how steam deck is still the best one that exists. What is so appealing about it is that it's also a competent mini PC. So even if you stop using it as a handheld for whatever reason, you have a really cool mini PC. Let me tell you why an emergency fund, or in other words just a few grand liquid are always a good idea. While investing money into funds and low risk stocks is a good idea, you don't want to ever touch that money at all. There are hefty fees for taking anything out of the trust funds, the 401k and depending on timing exchanging bonds or stocks is also highly expensive. And with some bad luck you just won't be able to access your assets or convert them at all for some time.

With some liquid cash you cover so many bad situations it's unreal. The long term gains you get from investing a few grands versus the sheer versatility and problem solving skills liquid cash possesses greatly outweigh the lost value in inflation.

Is it worth upgrading from a regular 3DS to a N3DSXL? I got back into handhelds recently, and while I'm having fun, the smaller screen size and form can be quite uncomfortable at times. I found a Japanese model with an IPS model for pretty cheap. It's a little busted, but I hear you can replace the shell and the plastic display overlay.

TL;DR, I don't think it's worth it.

If you want a bigger device and screens, the regular 3DS XL is probably still cheap-ish. Ergonomics are still going to suck, they sell cheap grips on Amazon for every 3DS model. Everything else the N3DSXL does isn't impressive enough to spend $100+ more on. There are like 2 games for the 3DS that are exclusive to the New models that are worth giving a shit about, Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade Chronicles, and they both have ports on the Switch anyways. The second "stick" is mostly used for better camera control in a handful of games like Dragon Quest, Luigi's Mansion, and the N64 Zelda ports, but that's about it, and that doesn't mean it doesn't suck to use. Also, the 3DS TN/IPS lottery is a meme to further hike this already gouged tendie machine up, unless it really is cheap, I wouldn't even worry about it. If you play a lot of DS games on the 3DS, it might be worth getting a Japanese DSi LL on eBay for like $75 since they're guaranteed to have IPS panels. One last thing, the 3DS is one of most difficult Nintendo devices to teardown and repair, I really wouldn't fuck around with it unless you know what you're doing.

Was one of the first retro handhelds that could play up to PSX that went viral for being cheap and not built like a McDonald's toy, maybe more like a toy from Walmart. This gave it an established position that allowed for stable community support and good CFW. Nowadays there are better options, but if you really only need to play up to PSX and don't care about shaders or Portmaster and just want something that's been around and works, then it's not a bad choice. It's just not a competitively priced choice anymore. You can buy an Anbernic for $50 that has Bluetooth, analog sticks, support for Portmaster and some N64 and Dreamcast, stereo speakers, etc. meanwhile the Miyoo Mini is only a few bucks cheaper and lacks all that. Maybe if it was <$30 like the G350 and R36 it'd be a different story, but it's just in need of an upgrade at this point.

I know this probably isn't news to anyone but on knulli for rg35xxh devices the battery is completely whack right, I usually piss and shit myself when it gets to 5% to charge it. so the other day I was feeling risky and just let it go to 0% (zero) and shit lasted for like another 45 minutes and didn't even run out yet. was just done playing no idea how much longer it would of gone lol. i know for my device at least when I charge it fully it only goes to 89% so maybe 0% is actually that missing 11%

Yeah dude, the New 3DS sucks for anything that isn't 3DS games. Even then, the screens look like shit compared to modern IPS displays and especially the OLED that the Thor will use. It's natively backwards compatible with DS and GBA, sure, but they get stretched out unless you hold a button while launching them to add giant black bars. Also emulation caps out at SNES and struggles with Super FX chip games, a fucking $25 R36S mogs a modded 3DS. If the Thor ends up being good and not having exploding hinges a few months in, can play the 3DS library and more, and has more QoL features like actual thumbsticks and nice screens, why wouldn't you get one over a New 3DS? t. considering selling my N3DSXL for the Thor after it's beta tested for a few months.

NTA but I will also vouch for the MagicX Mini Zero 28 because it is due to get muOS support soon, which is a Linux CFW that will probably be much better than the Android that's currently on it. Dawn Launcher, the Android frontend it's using, isn't the worst in the world if you can settle with that until the muOS build is out.
As someone who had a Miyoo Mini before, OnionOS was one of my favorite parts about the Miyoo. I feel like muOS is familiar enough and a good recommendation for Miyoo refugees, it's very customizable and has an option to resume the last game when powered on like you mentioned. It also has a fast boot up time. It's probably my favorite CFW since OnionOS. Honestly, if you don't get either the Miyoo or MagicX, I'd at least get an Anbernic/TrimUI device that supports muOS.

I am going to give you the benefit of doubt, but yeah, if you lurked for like half a thread you would've quickly learned that these chinks are operating on thin margins with old unsold components and cheap parts, because half of the point of the thread is nitpicking every factory flaw and laughing at impulse buyers (aka beta testers).
This is compounded with SDs being a VERY old proprietary standard which means there's no telling if you got a good card or a shit counterfeit made with recycled garbage out of pirated blueprints in some sweatshop - and even then, even OEMs cut a lot of corners all the time.
On top of all that, the chinkheld manufacturers hardly bother with firmware anymore and rely on community made CFW to run the hardware. These people work on this firmware in their free time and bugs may take a long time to be patched, if ever.
tl;dr: these devices aren't a "consumer ready" product and probably never will, they need a modicum of tech knowledge to properly set up, customize, and troubleshoot.
Can you or whoever you're gifting it spare an afternoon to learn how to set up CFW, read the github page to make sense of the paths, etc? Can they possibly spare another afternoon in the future in the event something borks with the handheld to fix it? If yes, go ahead. Otherwise just get a Switch or something.

A low tier rockshit with something like a rk3326 (such as the aforementioned R36S) is a good entry point, but it is limited in what it can do.
Anbernics can usually run MuOS which was a satisfactory experience from what I tried, I just got unlucky with the hardware it seems.
I also have an OG trimui smart which is fine but the stock OS is very finicky in what file extensions it wants and I couldn't get it to handle zipped ROMs. MinUI is much more stable, in the sense that there's practically nothing to break, that is.
Had a trimui smart pro, and it looks and runs well for what it is, but runs quite hot unless you go and fix the retarded governor settings, would not recommend.

It really depends from model to model best I can tell. Even price sometimes doesn't matter. Obviously the cheaper chinkshit devices are the worst offenders for poor durability.
Some $200+ devices crack, but maybe only specific colors. Some cheap devices can last forever, while others will experience screen failure from short drops. Hinges usually break.
I don't trust reviewers when it comes to durability. I judge based on the amount of ppl complaining online, or the absence of ppl complaining online. But at the end of the day these devices are mostly all chinkslop built from 8 year old ewaste, so base your expectations on that.

If you have a large collection increase the scan timeout or you'll have to start a new scan every 4 hours. The scanner and hash analyser are fast but it's held-up by the artwork fetching as it avoids sending too many requests so you don't get blocked. It has overrides so you don't need to have an exact match to the directory names and you can freely exclude or include directories roms and platforms as you wish. It handles zipped roms just fine. It also differentiates siblings and rom versions and can group them up.
It also manages saves and BIOS files but it's kinda limited right now.
The manager auto generates collections based on theme franchise or game type so it's useful for discovery. It also doesn't make the mistake of not allowing you to disable them or mix them up with user collections.
It can also double as a self hosted game tracker/backlog with completion percentages tags and retroachivements integration.
The web app comes with emulationJS that allows you to play games directly in browser.
The account system is useful and manages saves and collections per user. You can choose to share those or not and restrict access as an admin.
The web app is very well done and fast.

There's playnite integration muOS integration and tinfoil for switch integration. There's also a desktop client a steamdeck client and an android client.

I tried the android muOS and desktop integrations.

The desktop app is just an electron webapp and almost the same thing as the browser webapp. It does setup folders automatically for you so If you can use it it's better than the browser app.

The android app is very pretty and fast and removes half of the functionality of the webapp. But again it setups folders automatically and allows you to auto extract downloaded archives. Good for downloading the roms but not for library management.

You wouldn't want to manage your library on an handheld so the muOS app only being a downloader is just fine. It does lack searching and filtering options but it's fast enough and setups folders automatically.

The biggest flaw right now is that on all clients I tried the only thing Romm serves is the roms. It doesn't carry saves artwork or BIOS files which is kind of a shame considering it's all in the database already.

It is however in active development and it had two updates in the time I used it.
I will personally continue to use it to serve games to my handhelds and devices and am looking forward to it's development. Everyone that has a NAS or home server should consider using it.
