Alternative timeline: Nintendo 64 only comes with two controller ports by default. A multi tap accessory is released at launch for 25 bucks that's plugged into port 2 and features 3 controller ports of its own, allowing for 4 controllers total. No changes at all to games and their support of 4 players.
Would that have impacted your enjoyment of the N64?

no because ive always found more than 2 players to be mostly a meme. 4 way split screen sucks. most of my fondest multiplayer memories were fighting games with a room full of people just taking turns. and playing worms which only requires 1 controller anyway.

Yes. I played goldeneye with my friends a lot. If there were only 2 ports, they probably wouldn't have even bothered making it 4 player, Goldeneye would have just been a 2 player game like so many PS1 titles.

Impossible. Requiring a multitap would've limited the number of 4 player games that got released, and hurt N64 sales overall. Having four player support out of the box was one of the N64's killer features, and one of the only things that made it somewhat competitive with its contemporaries.
