Sonic Adventure DX vs DC
>get Sonic Adventure for Christmas of 2000 as a kid
>love it
>buy a Gamecube later on
>see Sonic Adventure DX in a Walmart one day, didn't even know it came out
>"Whoa, it's like Sonic Adventure but with better graphics!"
>buy it
>love it again
>years later, baffled to learn that a sizeable number of obese retards think DX is some kind of abomination that ruins the original work
>constantly see this hit piece of a website brought up during discussion: https://dreamcastify.unreliable.network
>tl;dr: "Ackshually, DX is SHIT and most people think Sonic Adventure sucks because they've only played DX and not the terribly misrepresented DC version that's way better!"
>indulge the autism and actually read through a good 80% of the content, give it a fair shot
>most of the proposed "downgrades" (as the site calls them on every page) are subjective bullshit like different textures (that typically look better than the originals) that the article author tries to paint as some whopping oversight just because he prefers the originals, even if there's nothing inherently wrong with the changes
>the few legitimate gripes are barely noticeable and mostly isolated to a small number of areas in the game; not to mention most are pedantic as fuck, e.g. "This one tiny texture in this one spot that you may never even notice is actually compressed to 16x16 down from 32x32! Game ruined LOL"
>almost completely glazes over the vast number of improvements DX has, like tons of additional geometry, shadows added to the environment in places where they were missing in the original game, and so on
>all of this on top of having a framerate double that of the DC (60 vs 30), significantly better looking character models and animations, better controls and greatly expanded content
It's time to admit that DX on Gamecube is the best version of the game, and that any of its flaws are massively overblown by fat deranged men online.

dx fucked every texture
dx fucked the lighting
dx fucked the models and made sonic's head an oval
dx fucked the framerate (instead of a solid 30, its 60 with massive drops)
dx ruined the water animation after the whale scene
dx ruined my favorite part of speed highway and you fall through the left wall every time
not to mention they completely gutted the sa1 chao and slapped in sa2

cube looks best. followed by dreamcast. The blur hides the way the textures are just pictures pasted onto basic geometry. It helps with suspension of disbelief, like 24fps for films. The high res outputs reveal the grass and the vine leaves to too clearly be pasted up photographs of the things and not the things. Like a movie interpolated to 60FPS by indian kid that now looks like a cheap soap opera

I think its a fair opinion to say that DX fucked a lot of the graphics and introduced some more jank. But for some reason, terminal Sonic autists have this idea that the only reason SA1 has a bad reputation is because more people played DX than the DC original, which is very amusing. Sure, there is more physics fuckery and movement jank in the DX port, but lets not pretend that the vast majority of that game's problems aren't also present in the DC original. It's a fucked up game no matter which version you play. I think it's very endearing and charming but its kusoge through and through, not some misunderstood masterpiece.

Sonic mega autists will reflexively try to prove you wrong by posting some webm where some speedrunning troon spindashes off a ledge to glitch through 8 walls and lands on a dime to finish the level in 10 seconds as proof that Sonic Adventure has good gameplay. Let's be fucking real, it just doesn't.

I'm a fellow zoom and first played Sonic Adventure in 2009 after my brother bought a bunch of old systems from a flea market, notably a Dreamcast. I loved my Dreamcast so much man. I eventually checked out DX on PC in 2012 and didn't think it was any worse; I actually thought it was far superior since you could now see Chao stats, you won't accidentally hurt your Chao anymore as picking them up is now a different button from attacking, and of course the game had smoother models + 60fps. It was only in the late 2010's that I started seeing people suppose the DX version was bad.

I think the 360 port gets a bad rap. I've played this game on DC, GC, 360, original PC release and Steam, and the Steam release is by far the worst. I've seen it thrown around that the 360 version was the basis of the Steam release but I don't think it's true. The game on 360 looks and plays almost exactly like the GCN release but with some higher poly models and better quality textures in places, and maintains stuff like being able to use the right joystick to look around in first person that the Steam release lacks (if you can do it on there I never figured out how unless there's some weird setting for it, but I don't think there is).

What's especially interesting about the 360 version is that there are actually two versions of it: the DX content was sold as a seperate DLC add-on. If you play the game on 360 without the DX add-on, the main menu is actually ripped straight from the Dreamcast version with the watery white background and classic logo and not the DX one with Sonic and Chaos on it. I haven't done a direct comparison or anything, and I don't know if the PS3 one is the same since I haven't played it, but the 360 version seems to have several assets from the DC version and improvements from DX mixed into one (even without the DX add-on). IMO, it's the best version of the game other than the DC original and it isn't the same as Steam.

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were built specifically for the Sega Dreamcast's SH4 CPU.

Dreamcast goes all out on transparency and lighting, supports 8-bit destination alpha blending with 24-bit sourcing 32-bit z-buffer, Saturn and Dreamcast diffuse+specular lightning based on palette indices, Dreamcast used tile layered deferred rendering which supported order independent transparency. the Egg Carrier in Sky Chase appears to be rendered using the functions that ignore palette lighting, and thus it is using Ninja Lights set up in the SL file.

Technically SA1 does have dynamic lighting effects, but you can't see them because they almost always get overridden with palette lighting. They were certainly meant to be in the game at some earlier point, though.

Sonic Adventure 1 was highly downgraded in terms of lighting on on the GC. SA2 lacked a bunch of shadowing effects which used the DC's modifier volumes. SA2 DC abused the Dreamcast's volumetric fog features for some interesting effects, like security alarms (Iron Gate, Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) and approximated "rain waves" (White Jungle). These effects are gone in SA2B, replaced with full-screen overlays (Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) or with a rotating vertex light (Iron Gate)

Sega changed SA1's palette based lighting to specular lighting in DX GC port and they barely even used it. SA2 CnkMultiDraw does support Vertex color + Lighting though used in Events

The porting team likely ran into problems implementing palette lighting, so they figured it would be easier to just update everything that didn't work immediately after they were brought over to SADX. Even SA2B doesn't use specular in the same way the DC version uses it.

That's what happens when the Dreamcast is the only system with hardware support for OIT lol
