Did you know anyone back in the 90s that owned a saturn? I didn't even know the saturn was a thing until I saw it on YouTube.

I mean i guess technically. I bought one off a friends, brothers, friends, brother who sold it to me with a bunch of games and accessories for 20 dollars in either 99 or 2000 so that he could buy a playstation or dreamcast.

I knew one person yes, ultimate Sega fanboy, only had Sega consoles (and all of them), bought only games for Sega consoles and nothing else, not even computer even though they had one.
He had lot's of games, bought everything the Sega magazines told him to buy like Guardian Heroes, Sega fans tend to be like this, only cared about Sega and that's why Sega consoles tend to have a great attach rate. The only thing he didn't do was import which for a Saturn fan in Europe was surprising to be honest.
Sega magazines in Europe talked a LOT about imports because I mean, if Americans thought they had it bad with Saturn releases they should check European releases and how grim that was:

https://www.satakore.com/sega-saturn-complete-european-game,,1,,0,,1.html
Note that his list includes games that were only released in 1 or 2 countries too.

only one or two people. it wasn't a very popular console and the specs were pretty average. i liked it but getting new software for it became challenging. had to rely on the piracy scene for new games not being shipped to my country quick enough or in great numbers.

I knew about the system from stores and magazines. But I knew noone who owned one. System did okay in the first year or two after which support seemed to have dropped fast. There were a few games I was interested in (daytona, panzer 2, sega rally, dark savior, legend of oasis, and a few more. Took a while before I could actually get to play them)

Yes. Friend of my brother had one and I got to play VF2. Loved it. Another kid i rode the bus with said he had one with Sonic R but that was honestly it. I was given my first Saturn summer of '00 with MK3 Ultimate and that was when I started collecting foe it because i was a poorfag and all the games were practically being given away.

It's the only mainstream console I've never seen in person and none of my friends had one. My friends had a 3DO, a CD-I, and I had a TG16 and then later a Turbo Duo, but I never even knew this thing existed until the early 2000s when people on GFAQs were talking about them

I owned a Sega Saturn, had the American one. I ended up buying the Japanese one when I became an adult. It's my favorite 5th gen console to be honest, mainly because of the arcade titles and the Sega exclusives.

The only person I knew who ever had a Saturn said Powerslave was the only good game. And that's how I learned about Powerslave.
Anonymous No.11999781 [Report]
I owned one, but I was the only kid I knew that had one. A friend was going to buy one, but ended up getting a PlayStation instead because it was cheaper/more games.
Even though I was the only kid that one had, my friends used to visit often and loved playing Die Hard Arcade, VF2, Daytona and Athlete Kings. It was a fun console.
When I went to high-school it was 1999 and the Dreamcast was out, and most friends were waiting on PS2, but I met one person who did have a Saturn and lended me Die Hard Trilogy to, which was fun.

As others have said, at first it was common enough to see in stores and at rental places, but after a year or two it quickly fell off in popularity. I couldn't find games to rent anywhere and most retailers didn't have it apart from Electronics Boutique or other specialists like Games Men or Games Wizards (Ausfag). By 1997 or 1998 I sometimes got a game sent from England by some relatives who were travelling there for Xmas or the like, that's how I got Shining Force III and Last Bronx.

My neighbor with rich parents who also had a psx and an n64 had it. I only played it once, and it was MK Trilogy. Never again since we got it for both the psx and the n64 later and he didn't have many games for it. This kid is also the only reason I've ever seen the Dreamcast IRL, also only once, but this time because I moved.

Hello from Ireland. I knew exactly one house that had one, and it's the only time I ever played it in my life, maybe a handful of times. Specifically I remember Panzer Dragoon and the Aliens game (trilogy?) It must have been 98 or something because the Playstation and N64 were out, N64 was 97 here and these lads were focused on those thinking the Saturn was old so I didn't see it often in their house. Funnily enough they had a NES they'd get out every so often.

The Saturn was a tragic moment in weeb history, because it revealed that "Japan makes good games" was actually "Capcom, Konami, Nintendo, and Square make good games".

No, I heard about the saturn in the 2000s because of Castlevania SOTN for saturn had Maria as a playable character. (I also learned about the PC Engine too that day).

However, back in the 90s. I rememeber I had a neighbor that had the 3do with Gex and it looked cool. The curious thing is that it was 90s in Mexico in a town in middle of nowhere and this cunt had a 3DO. No idea how the fuck did he get it since his parents were also middle class.

I used to think the Genesis was the last console and the Saturn was just a Genesis with a CD and 32x built in, so I dodged it. Then, in the summer of 2004, a crackhead sold me one for 2 or 5 bucks. I assumed it was broken because Genesis cartridges didn’t fit, and it wouldn’t play cd games. Turns out, a tech later explained to me that it had nothing to do with the Genesis.
I should have it somewhere.

I have never seen a Sega Saturn back then. Even here in Europe where Sega was really popular. I saw MD/Genesis and DC everywhere.
The first time I learnt about the Saturn was in the early 2000s when I saw the name in online walkthroughs. There were a bunch of PS1 games that had a Saturn version.

Normal though, when you have a Saturn you have to keep it to yourself. It's a special patrician console and you can't just let dirty plebeians near it.

Yep, only one. This cute tomboy who ran around with the goths in my year in high school. Think she'd been given one a few weeks after release date by her estranged dad, when the Saturn looked like the safer bet. Overheard her in Electronics Boutique trying to convince her friends to get one, and getting laughed at. Broke my heart. Thanks, Sega.

One awkward poor kid raised by a single mother brought one over to another poor kid raised by a single father's house one night and we played Virtua Farter for a bit but got bored and went back to playing Mario Kart on my SNES. I used to bring it over all the time because the single father kid only had a Mega Drivel and three boring games that he played over and over again in the dark because he was motherless. Last I heard he was trying to drink himself to death finally after trying for decades.

Within my circle of friends, there were 3 others which had a Sega Saturn. I'd go to libraries, other schools, even some friend's friends, or random visits to specialty game stores and there'd be 1 or 2 others there who owned the system. While the Playstation was much more popular, even in its day the Saturn still had a decent player support in its day from my perspective.

I only personally remember two kids from my school with a Saturn. Myself and a friend whose dad owned a Japanese import video store. I played Bug! at his house around the launch date. Then I got mine with Virtua Fighter and Panzer Dragoon for Christmas later that year. Can't remember when I got Bug! and Clockwork Knight, but those were two of the other first games I had.

I didn't realize just how obscure it was until later though, the Saturn felt like a big deal for my brothers and I. We loved Sega. I was kind of surprised learning just how few people in America had one. I knew tons of people with a Dreamcast though.

A cousin on mine, when I saw that cartridge port and was told it wasn't for Mega Drive I was so disappointed, my 1st impression of the Saturn was that it was a piece of shit and inferior to the PS1, finding out there was no Sonic title for it was even worse.

I didn't know the Saturn was a thing until I picked up a cheat code magazine in the early 2000s that had a section for it. Before that, I thought Sega went from the Genesis to the Dreamcast. Tbf, I was a kid and I really only got into console gaming at the tail end of 5th gen/early 6th gen.
