honestly its a retarded concept due to how many variables and subjective elements there are. however, a strong argument can actually be made for tetris (i dont care which version. not important to me). by being so simple, it attains a certain elegance and focus. its skill based. its an actual game. technological advancement does extremely little to illustrate shortcomings or create opportunities for improvement. meanwhile, graphics (and their progression) alone play a huge part in the quality of so many other types of games. yes, theres something to be said for art style, but anything on the n64 is easily laughed out of the discussion. graphics dont really affect tetris much. with 3d especially, the physical environment plays a huge role. appearance, intractability, layout/design, population, objectives, and how the character navigates the space are a huge amount of variables. tetris doesnt have to deal with any of that. its clean and elegant in its simplicity and objectives.

due to the nature of the 3d medium and how the n64 is a very primitive foray into it, its absurd to consider anything in its catalogue as any sort of contender for "best game ever made". again, by all means consider one your favorite, but "best ever made" is laughably wrong. every single aspect of those games has been improved upon. the more complex the environments/simulations, player functions, and objectives are, the more room there is for flaw and failure, as well as argument as to whether X aspect is truly "better" than something else. as such, while something like gta6 might be more technologically impressive than tetris, i would still consider tetris the "better game" due to checking so many success boxes and avoiding so many failure boxes.

its a generally stupid concept, but there are still certain games that EASY to recognize as laughably not even close to consideration (anything on the n64).

Like already mentioned, it's Tetris. Design-wise it did exactly what it set out to do perfectly on the first try. Enjoyed by gamers and non-gamers alike. The graphics never age, even the original version has its charm. Still being ported, copied and iterated on to this day. Even has e-sports style competition for those who like that sort of thing. I can't find a single fault other than it being a boring, safe answer to this question.

this is the problem with comparing any 2 games. different doesnt necessarily mean better OR worse. but the bigger problem with comparing things with oot, is that you're fighting zealots with their preconceived biases, so its like a double sized hurdle. its basically impossible to have honest conversation about things because of that.

as far the zelda franchise goes, personally, yes i do like that oot is generally lacking a core gimmick that dramatically changes the focus. i like that it feels more "plain" and "simple". future games have sailing shit, wolf shit, and waggle shit. theres always some majorly defining gimmick that nobody asked for to get in the way. oot's gimmick is literally "zelda but in 3d now" and arguably also the child/adult time travel. everyone has been waiting for "zelda but in 3d now, but BETTER", but instead we get gimmicks. people are so stuck on not liking those gimmicks, that they refuse to be honest with themselves and recognize all of the other improvements. and thats JUST within the zelda franchise.

Because people rightly have the judgement to recognize that no dev, even the original designers, have successfully created anything else as refined as OoT, and effort would be better spent polishing that to perfection than attempting something from the ground up that will almost certainly fail to capture what the whole industry has been unable to replicate for the same number of decades that the game has been 'missing depth'.

OoT beautifully balances a tons of different things at once in ways that greatly benefit it, few games try to and which is really hard to pull off, but if you can't acknowledge why that's impressive and games that say, don't have non-linear structure+real time action gameplay+key item progression that involves lots of different kinds of interactions, you're missing a lot of what people find impressive about the game and why this matters.

Even something like the combat is only bad because of the weak enemy AI, fix that and you have something honestly at least as good as any lauded action game, and it was the first game to do free movement along with Z-targeting. The other weaknesses are purely technical like the blurry low res textures.

They have to change things, and some strengths can be found in the alterations, but there's also always weaknesses introduced. The ocean is cool, but it slows the game down. Having an alternate gameplay style is cool, but I don't always want to be a wolf when the game wants me to be one. OOT is unfettered by all of this because being first allows it to just be.
