I remember loving this game. Killing camps with people. Playing a dwarf cleric and making friends in the capital. Going back is impossible.

I never played them but I like the box art.

it's a solved game and the community is old and jaded, even if you play on something like p99 it's never going to be the same experience

I had a good time with this private server called Shards of Dalaya in the early 2010s, which was like a quasi-total conversion with all custom spawns/quests and a redone zone connection map that still played like Everquest. Helped a lot to combat that feeling of playing a solved game. Population was always pretty modest though and server devs were too obviously embedded in the raiding scene which led to gay drama.

custom ruleset privates servers always feel cheap and like you mentioned, admin corruption is a given - the only people with the time and desire to focus on such a project are neet manchildren and they just want you to be the npc while they live out their childhood dream of being that uber guy they saw in east commons once with the flaming sword

I wanted it to be good but it's a soulless, homogenized, tumblr-art looking shitshow that fetishizes the worst part of EQ...

kind of crazy, some of the zones on that map wouldn't be added to the game for over a decade
even ignoring kunark that's some massive fucking scale for a highly experimental 1999 release

I wonder what tools they used for zone building? the early zones seem bsp-based, like a quake map

Played it for the first time in 2024 with a friend of mine on some of the free servers on the....Platinum Edition? Anyway, it's still really fun, just incredibly grindy. Once you get strong enough to delve into dungeons though, and you can fight your way out of your starting area, it feels incredibly rewarding.

You can just download Everquest Titanium and enjoy the game how it originally was. The servers are still quite active. A few hundred people should be playing at any given time.

The most cancerous way you could possibly attempt to play EverQuest.

A few of the OG devs for EQ 1 are making a new mmo called Monsters And Memories its still in early alpha but they do open playtests from time to time. Might be worth checking out if your craving that old school mmo feel.

it's not good and it's probably not going to get good, very little about it is eq except the classes/skills they copy/pasted, and they haphazardly pushed in a bunch of classic wow shit that don't mesh at all, and what few "unique" systems they made are terrible

P99 is fun, but it’s a dead end. You’ll enjoy the looong journey to max level but then you’ll be stuck without new content and unable to do raids without a poopsock guild.
I recommend project quarm its a progression private server a little over a year old. Very active too.

It's actually amazing how much better EQ looks using the original 1999 client than the later clients. I think during the conversion to DX9 they completely butchered the lighting effects.

Ignore the magenta text, you can fix it by disabling ClearType but I don't feel like it.

Other amazing thing, 144fps, gpu doesn't even break 4% utilization. Absolutely butter smooth without a single jitter or hitch.

I remember this being way brighter back in the day, like outright neon. Maybe because of ultravision? Haven't reverse engineered the client enough to enable that.

if eq had just stuck with that style they would would still be printing money to this day and the game would run on a potato

Here's live with as close to "classic" graphics settings as the client allows. Level 1 human so no special sight or anything. They just ramped the ambient light or gamma or something way the fuck up, completely washes out the baked vertex lighting. Perspective also seems completely different, but maybe that's just due to the 16:9 ratio? In either case, structures look smaller, less epic.

everquest has vert- fov, you have to play with 4:3 /viewport settings

I have distinct memories of luclin still being dark as fuck, I would guess oow is when they started blasting the gamma because they did a lot of engine fuckery around then

Yeah the lighting effects were so kino. Reminds me of the lighting in dk64. It looks like absolute trash on the modern client.

kind of gives like unreal or quake vibes with the lighting intact
also explains that weird feeling I got trying out private servers using the titanium client that things didn't look right

I don't know, even setting the viewport to the right aspect ratio it's still way off. I don't know how rendering worked back in DX8 times with fixed function pipelines, but clearly the original perspective transform was completely different from the later one.

Yeah, it's really similar to Quake. Can almost guarantee you that whatever tool they used to make the zones for the first few expansions was heavily based on WorldCraft.

Can I get the demo running on a win98 machine with a decent gpu (for the time)? I'd love to record some footage of the demo and make a comparison to modern EQ and eq servers.

You don't need Win98, it just werkz on modern Windows. You can download the original CD off internet archive then just run tutorial.exe. If you want to scale it to high resolution like I did you can use something like dgVoodoo. Getting it to run zones besides the tutorial is a little more complex, and it's not really perfect because various environmental effects like fog would've been set by the server and aren't stored client side.
