You kidding me? People loved Lunar. The Working Designs scripts were one reason why, and a reason why the game is still talked about today. The only mistake they made was not including the WD difficulty changes, the balance in their versions of the PSX Lunars was fine.

I don't agree with changing game scripts as much as WD did, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy their scripts.

Trashing Working Design is a modern opinion, from the point of view of someone who can now play hundreds of JRPGs and tons of fan translations. Back then they were some of the only ones bringing JRPGs to the US, and the balance changes are also what western players were looking for at the time.

I'm not saying they were perfect, there are of course plenty of questionnable changes they did, but you have to look at the context to get the big picture.

Anyway Legend of Eldean is one game I doubt would be half as memorable without the WD humour, it's a pretty "by the numbers" game otherwise.

Don't play any version other than the original, especially EB. It's one of the worst remakes in history. Totally gutted and fucked both overwold and dungeons, less animations, less music tracks, pitifully easy.

Just emulate the original, it's easy as fuck.

The original Gamefan review if Lunar, Nick Rox heavily rags on the translation and pop culture references. Back then it really annoyed me as well because the last thing I wanted to be reminded of playing this anime RPG was fucking Bill Clinton. But now I see it as nostalgically whimsical. I miss those days now....

true, back in the day people tolerated horrific fucking shit. If working designs today was altering scripts making hilarious pop culture references today at the expense of a certain american president im sure youd be laughing your ass off and defending it right?

You don't need to "dissuade rentals" for an RPG, the game is already long enough that one wouldn't want to rent it, especially if the saves are internal to the cartridge. Besides rentals were only detrimental to the big publishers, anything with a low print run rentals were benificial because that meant thousands of guaranteed sales from the rental shops.
The average age of a JRPG player in the US was older than in Japan.
Western reviewers and players complained when games were too easy. In Japan they complained that the JRPGs were too hard.
"Challenge" was a big part of video game marketing in the west, even for RPGs. There is a 1991 press release from Square that uses the word "challenge" 6 times.

Forgot to mention, but in the case of WD the balance changes make even more sense than for your average game.

In Japan the target audiance for these games was: literally everyone.
In the west the target audiance for a game published by WD back then was a niche of hardcore gamers

Same games, completely different markets.

I agree with him. I think the difficulty balances WD made make it better. They set it so that if you explore each dungeon fully but don't stop to grind on purpose, each boss will be a challenge and drain your resources, but you will win. My first time through Lunar 2, the final fight against Zophar came down to just Hiro left alive, no more healing or MP items left, one round away from death and win the fight with a Poe Sword. This is my Borgan in the current playthrough I have been doing. Though as nails, but pay attention, use what you have at your disposal and you can win. It doesn't get better than that.

I never gave an opinion of what I think is better between the original or WD balancing as a whole (I think it varies from game to game, in fact I loved WD Alundra on my first play but hated it on my second play, go figure), I'm merely stating the context around WD because I feel that most people these days complaining about WD do not know or understand that context. They apply modern logic to it, like that anon above comparing the Bill Clinton joke to a moder "Donald Trump joke" in 2025.... the context is not the same.

I see what you mean then, and generally agree. With the pop culture stuff it wasn't so much specifically Clinton as much as just breaking the 4th wall like that pulled me out of the experience. Also shit like the fart jokes added in which I just thought were lame. Other than those parts though, I think the translation is really good overall. If you ever want to experience pain, play the Ubisoft port for Lunar SS on GBA, it is so dry and dull it somehow makes an awesome fantasy anime adventure utterly boring.

I remember that too, I rented Lufia 2 a bunch Didn't help that Lufia 2 had a habit of glitching and erasing my saves on top of people deleting it. But that kinda proves his point, you already had an incentive to buy RPGs instead of renting them because it wasn't fun fighting over saves or renting repeatedly.

When/where are you thinking of? When people were regularly renting 16-bit RPGs, emulation for those games wasn't very good or a popular thing to do. Didn't start getting more commonplace until the late 90s and especially the early 2000s as far as I remember.
