I'm a zoomer and find boomer shooters very boring, but damn this is game is very fun.
I'm having way more fun with this than most modern games. The weapons feel very good to use, the sounds the enemy make, the atmosphere, caleb's lines, it's all just perfect.
I can't imagine how much more fun it would have been to play this back in the day.

I'd say it's held aloft mostly by its atmosphere (which admittedly is very solid). Higher difficulty levels devolve into creeping along, throwing dynamite around corners, hosing down the survivors, healing up, then repeating. This due to the high number of hitscan enemies which shred you as soon as they detect you.

I'm a boomer (the 30 yo kind) and I find shmups boring, age sometimes doesn't have a relevance on things.

If you find boomer shooters boring how the fuck did you even end up playing blood?
Admit that you just watched some streamer play it or watched a video essay on it, stop acting like you actually play games.
This goes for most zoomers. You people don't play vidya, you passively consume them and then pretend you have opinions on them, and I'm sick of it.

honestly idk. I played doom but didn't find it visually appealing and the guns didn't feel fun. The weapons in blood just feel very satisfying to use and the levels feel fun to play in. The only other shooter that has my eye right now is duke nukem probably since I like the alien theme, though I doubt I'll like it as much as blood. I'm open to any suggestions for ones that came out around the same time as blood and don't feel as old.

Since we don't have a sample of what other Ye-Olde-Rooty-Tooty-Point-And-Shooty games you've played, people aren't going to have any idea what you're comparing it to besides the aforementioned Doom. Fuck Descent was out before Blood and that game was about flying a little spacecraft through fucking space mines fighting killer mining robots and saving hostages and shit. You have to start with what you dislike before people can put together what you'd even like. That said
>The weapons in blood just feel very satisfying to use and the levels feel fun to play in.
Isn't going to help people with what you find good as they're pretty subjective and varied. Shot in the dark but you might like the other build games, as well as the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games. Descent as well if you can wrap your head around the controls. In the end its really about specific elements of what you liked, things like movement, enemy ai patterns, enemy types, weapon types, level design and progression, and so on.

Duke Nukem 3D, Powerslave, Shadow Warrior, Half-Life, Quake, Quake 2.

Doom may seem slightly rudimentary in polish and presentation compared to later shooters, but Doom 2, and Plutonia particularly, has a lot of very strong gameplay design.
Consider giving Doom another chance some day, you're probably not that concerned with purism so you would maybe appreciate them better with a mod like Smooth Doom, along with a gore mod and brightmaps.

NTA but Doom 64 specifically had a lot of switches that affected areas you haven't been to in a bit, usually with a monitor for a camera nearby to clue you in on where. if you didn't know to use the cameras, it would get confusing to navigate especially with how the lighting worked. Build games love showing you shit with environmental modifications, so when you saw a building get fucking leveled or a mountain blow up or some shit it was a pretty clear indication of where to go. Mainly applies to a few levels, but some levels like Hectic were also just fairly difficult to figure out if you're not a pistol starter. By comparison in Blood you can still follow the "If there are living enemies, I'm probably going the right way" method the vast majority of the time, though a few levels can be a bit more of a maze.

I think the references are cool but caleb laughing as you blow shit up and his other lines is something I really enjoy. In most shooter games you're some generic hero type guy but it felt very nice to play as an evil/morally grey character in a macabre setting. I finally got around to playing through Blood myself about a year ago. I ignored Blood for far too long and for the dumbest reason. I had a friend at the time tell me he thought Blood was bad, so I never even looked it up. In hindsight it's weird as fuck he'd tell me that, since he was an FPS fan who would have understood every horror reference in it.

Blood just feels different than any of the other retro shooters. Most horror games are all about making the player feel weak and trying to scare them, but Blood uses horror as a setting for you to wreak havoc as a powerful force. It's just a damn fun theme. Cultists, demons, ghosts and monsters of all sorts roaring through dreamlike yet familar world of early1900s bizarre horror locales that feel more grounded than Doom or Quake, but more strange and otherworldly than something like Duke.

A lot of boomer shooters focus on flying through maps at high speeds and moving around erratically while popping off shots to defeat enemies... but Blood slows everything down because of how accurate the hitscan enemies are. It feels like you're carefully crawling through the levels... creeping around, then bursting into a room and trying to take everyone out as fast as possible, switching weapons non stop and using every tool you have to survive.

This pacing of slow then fast, slow then fast, makes the levels more interesting because you're actually looking at every corner and carefully exploring the level as opposed to quake or doom where you are just zooming around.

The weapons also make the dynamic of slowly creeping / explosive action more fun because they're so quirky. I can't think of any other game that so strongly relies on the use of tossed explosives, which are just so much more dynamic and interesting to use. The crazy gibs and explosive gore give amazing feedback to every action too.

Lastly, Caleb's one liners and the vocals on everything in the game do so much work to make you feel immersed in this crazy world in a way Quake / Doom do not. You feel much more attached to Caleb than doom guy because of this.

I agree with all of this, though you can definitely zoom through the levels if you know the layout and play smart with the tnt. Some of them you can beat in like a few minutes max too.
It is interesting how much of the time you're going to be using the tnt, in most games the throwables are just an afterthought but they're the center focus here. On higher difficulties you can't really beat the game without using tnt. And then of course shit like the vodoo doll is just icing on the cake. Every weapon feels fun to use and you'll use them all throughout the game instead of relying on just 1 or 2.

People tend to dislike zoomies on this board because your generation tends to want to warp older games to meet newer sensibilities. We all know there were a lot of mistakes made in designing older games, but even "QoL" removes a lot of delayed gratification they gave that newer games don't really have. Props for being up front about not having grown up with the games, but that kind of stuff is why it tends to have a negative connotation. For what its worth, its always great to see younger people learn to enjoy these games, just as long as you don't feel like the games need to adapt to you rather than the other way around.

A lot of Doom Mods are on par if not better than other games on the same engine. Some like samsara even let you play most of those games in Doom. Or Heretic, Hexen, etc. There's an absurd amount of gameplay mods or TCs to check out if you want to see Doom expand.
That said, a lot of Doom's appeal comes from its gameplay flow and design, both in maps and encounters themselves. You could call UV Fast a lot of things, but boring probably wouldn't be among them. In fact, you might like pistol starting if you've never tried it. Dakka makes a great introduction to the idea, besides being a great weapon mod it allows you to do stuff like keep weapons but reset ammo between maps. It might sound like a negative, but it really teaches you to hoard ammo less and splurge on the big guns more often.

Only NotBlood has tried to help with that, I think. There’s a setting to increase enemy speed and some behavior fixes: But her cleavers can hit you while crouched, stone gargoyles can’t get minimized through crouching, but that might be it.
Spitballing some ideas:
>Regular gargoyles could benefit from a more threatening projectile
>Maybe butcher vomit could have a small gross explosion
Not sure about rats, and the spiders work well as fodder when there’s a super spider around. The movespeed boost does alright in improving them.

Not the biggest fan of Fresh Supply, Heretic+Hexen was much better.

I played dusk recently before blood (which also got me interested in playing blood), and I saw this game being mentioned alongside the other 2. It looks kind of similar to dusk/blood (even plot wise), but other than that I don't know much about it and haven't played it. I'll probably try it out when it's on sale but desu I didn't like dusk that much even though everyone praises it everywhere. It felt extremely easy to play on ciero madre or whatever it was called and the npcs were extremely easy to cheese unintentionally. I also found most of the levels outside of a few kind of boring, though they looked well made visually.

H+H is good as a port, making it very easy to play on consoles. Considering they boast limited mod support, they really shouldn't have shoehorned stuff like wayfarer's tome and the awful map redesigns as the default. They're just fine, but definitely not "definitive" or anything like that. And yes I know you can turn a lot of that shit off, but zoomies and alphies are going to think that shit is "vanilla" since its the default for them.
>Just think about how many people still have GZD look like smeared shit in 2025 because they never bothered to change the settings, let alone all its other compat changes turned on by default.

Good one. Was there a big arrow on the floor in your brain pointing at the word "zoomer" so you'd know what to say and wouldn't get lost?

The new episodes are great. I play them with all the enhancements, they seem to be made with that in mind.

The original games I play in GZDoom though. I read that even with the enhancements off they still completely changed parts of both Heretic and Hexen.
