Lucas Arts' were particularly bad in that regard. I recently played Day of the Tentacle for the first time and the puzzles were pretty good but the slow walking and repeated backtracking to the toilet got old fast.

I know this is a feature in the recent releases, but I don't remember this being possible in the original DOS game. Maybe it was and I just didn't know it.
To my kid self these were the closest thing to an open world game I had ever played, where you could explore the "world" back and forth as much as you wanted with relative freedom, so I didn't mind things like that.
I would probably be annoyed by it now though.

It's in the manual, which if you've played a downloaded version you probably won't have read. One of the problems with playing old games without all the box goodies.

Also - in most Lucasarts games, double clicking or right clicking on a doorway usually takes you straight through - though I can't recall if that's the case for DOTT.

Yeah I usually make sure to read it, like with KQ6 it was essential because of the clues. But for some reason I just skimmed the DOTT manual so that's what I get I guess.

>clicking on a doorway usually takes you straight through - though I can't recall if that's the case for DOTT.
I just tried it and it didn't work for DOTT. Not for Fate Of Atlantis either. You can skip dialogues though.

Call me a casual faggot but I VASTLY prefer the GBA version and BS3 because they have direct controls. Makes the games a lot more enjoyable. I also like just reading without the voice acting, but I know that's just me.
Like all genres, adventure games can range from great to awful. Broken Sword was one of the greats to me. I never really cared for le epic random humor stuff like Monkey Island, though it plays well for what it is.

Oddly enough, they were the only genre of games to make me actually feel immersed in the game world. I honestly think the sometimes obtuse puzzles helped in that regard, gave me so much more time to take in the atmosphere.
They're a bit hard to get full enjoyment out of in the smartphone era where everything's trying to grab your attention in exchange for a measly amount of dopamine.

Gonna dig into this game called AleX-WORLD soon. Played 30 minutes or so of it and was really intrigued. Doesn't seem like "le hidden gem" in need of translation or anything, but I'm a sucker for trippy visuals and 90s visions of bleak futures. Also will be good non-VN/anime language practice.

I'd say if anything it's more grounded than 2 which had aliens and an entire chapter where you're a historical pirate which ends with your beheading. There's a bit more direct murder, but I'd say it's no worse than the hitmen from 1 killing that one museum janitor at the end of the second chapter and showing some blood.

I love point'n'clicks. What I really like about the genre is you never know what you're gonna get. Gameplay loops across most genres stay the same but in point'n'clicks, the puzzles depend completely on the setting which can make for completely unique scenarios not seen in other games. I like the more weird and obscure ones. There's some amazing flash ones.
Some of my favorites are Eastern Mind, Mata Nui Online Game, Tony Tough, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream

As a bit of advice; one and two are essentially two halves of the same game. So if you play the first bear in mind you'll want the second on hand to directly continue the narrative.

The artwork of point and click games is so evocative in a lot of games. The environments of ones like Discworld and Syberia create an atmosphere that the text and story alone cannot convey.

playing a point and click really puts into perspective how much of your brain is neglected by the typical action game with shallow at best adventure elements. not that those games are bad there's just an entire plane of engagement that barely gets touched, using your brain and thinking is actually fun.

I always liked the art style of detailed 2D graphics and the chill tempo of figuring out what to do next, step by step. And these games were very much about story. They were definitely one of my favourite types back when I was a kid. I could name a couple handfuls of titles thinking about which makes me want to replay.

They're a bit of a bygone era now. Everything is all multi-genre, action-adventure with RPG and crafting elements stuff. Point & click games were pure story + puzzles.

That's not necessarily true... some of the LucasArts and Dynamix adventures had action sequences. Whether these were good additions to the games was controversial, even back then.

Even when doing the wits path in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis you still had to do some of the action/stealth mini games, I guess to make it feel more like an Indy movie.

This. Nowadays I enjoy the puzzle solving just as much as the story and atmosphere and regret using a guide on some of the best games the genre had to offer back when I was too stupid to care. Wish there was a feature in ScummVM where you could cheat your way through the puzzles of some games without seeing the puzzle solutions desu, so people don't have to waste the puzzles just to get through the game.

I have a really bad association with these old adventure titles. My dad had a family friend we'd go visit every summer and he had a PC down in the basement where I'd play adventure games. It smelled like cat piss and mildew, had rugs hung on the walls and all these shitty paintings that looked like Patrick Nagel girls painted by a retard. He looked like Dr. Katz and the rest of his house was sterile and depressing. I've never been able to shake the association of 90s point and clicks with that guy's unsettling home.
