I feel gaming lost 80 percent of its artistic value and visual appeal when 3D replaced 2D, perceived realism and freedom seem like they must be good on paper, but prove to actually limit things. Same reason a hand drawn animated film from the 80s can still and often does look way better than a modern CGI film

Nah I had more funky dreams with Mario 64 or Star Fox 64 than with 2d games. Genesis shit has like what, 40 colors?
Anonymous No.12115934 [Report]
Fully agree.

The only 3d gaming artstyles which I truly like are:

1. Cel Shaded cartoon style, employed best so far in 3rd person action/platformer games, and kart racers.

2. ARC SYSTEM WORKS Fighting Games - appears to be 2d hand drawn art, but it’s built on 3d models, in a 3d space. But gameplay is limited to the traditional 2d fighting game standard established by CAPCOM in the 90’s arcade world.

It has less colors aside that nobody ever complained about but it also doesn't look like Roblox unintentionally, hmmm

I mean you can see what everything is supposed to be, it's not like it's a fuckin Gameboy in all green and black

>nobody ever complained about but it
Everyone thought it looked like shit compared to the Snes because it had like 1/4 the colors. And then 5th Gen comes in with more colors and 3d allowing for more visual empathy. Only zoomers trying to fit in pretend to dislike early 3d.

Console babbys like to talk about a "jump" to 3D but if you played arcade and computer games it was just a gradual evolution over the years

>>12116072
That's bullshit lol arcade games started having 3D not much earlier than the PS1 and regardless arcade superiority is nonsense, arcade games really only matter to a couple genres, fighters, beat em ups, and racing games.... the latter is the only one where 3D took over predominantly, 3D fighting fans are the outliers and 3D beat em up fans don't exist

>arcade games started having 3D not much earlier than the PS1
ah I think we're talking about two different things.
You mean market-wise, there was an explosion of 3D game popularity around the time of the PS1
What I meant was I witnessed a slow iterative path from vector wireframes like Star Wars (arcade) to filled polygons like Arctic Fox (computers) and Hard Drivin (arcade), to eventually textured polygons by the time you get into the PS1 era alongside PC games like Descent and arcade games like Tekken, without ever feeling one specific "jump" in technology

PC games during the mid-to-late90's to late 2000s had the best 3D. The artistry was insane.

>this board was mostly Gen 4
It still is because of zoomers trying to fit in. Gen 3 and older are too intimidating for you so you just pose for gen 4 instead.
>arcade games started having 3D not much earlier
Winning run and Hard Drivin' are from 1988, Revs is from 1984 and runs in a british toaster.
>b-b-but that's racing games!!
The best selling ps1 games are racing games. Even if you like jarpigs then 5th Gen offers much more interesting choice than the usual shitty DQ clone from gen 4.

Zoomers overrate the late 90s and early 00s

You might think you're not a zoomer but if you're a "late millennial ' you are. If you didn't grow up with SNES and Genesis you're too young to really be Millennial culturally even if you are technically. And nobody who had SNES and Genesis as a kid thought 3D was better

It's not a 3D thing it's an artists retiring and dying thing.
The same thing happened with D&D and 40k art in the 90s. In so many artistic disciplines, the later boomer/Gen X artists that replaced the dying early boomer/greatest gen artists just weren't as skilled as the guys they replaced.

Name your top SNES and Genesis games or quit typing. I'm going to predict a bunch of decent at best games that don't come close to objective superiority such as Mega Turrican or objective trash such as Bubsy that zoomers only say is good because they played it for two minutes emulated and didn't actually own it and invest time into it

2D games are more calculating to play. The introduction of 3D games was when I had my first experience with mindless gameplay, just pressing buttons and passing time. Sure they were fun, but ultimately the experience was a lot more passive with 3D, where I was playing something between a video game and a movie.

I like action and adventure games, no good ones exist in 5th Gen aside from a couple carry overs like MMX4. The only games I play from that era are fighting games which weren't developed for console and the 2D ones kept being better and still are

You wanna play boring sloggy normie dog shit like MGS GTA and Tenchu be my guest, I'll stick to high octane hardcore 2D greatness like Contra, Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden

Racing games are boring.

I’m 41 years old and well I did think the transition to 3-D was kind of cool, a big part of me could not help but feel sort of sad and melancholy over the fact that 2-D was essentially “over”. Like there was a lot of potential that was never realized. I want to see that Project Dream game by RARE… I want to see a 2D Mario game on a 32 bit cartridge based platform… We never got these because the technology moved so fast.

Disagree. Go back to the pre2d and way too many games are just variations of action side scrollers. Very few games actually try to be unique with gameplay. And it wasn't for lack of tech, because some studios tried. Your op pic is a great example, hard corps is great but at the end of the day is really just another hard action platformer. Meanwhile PS1 had stuff like MGS and Kings Field.

2D is defintely more polished than more basic 3D... but 3D, even in its simplest forms, still have a lot of visual appeal even early on when done well.

>where 3D in fact looks like garbage due to the cartridge limitations
That's hardly why though. In fact, the cartage format was one of the N64's biggest advantages, and why it was possible to have huge levels with tons of 'cull zones' but minimal popup and tons of mocaped animations. Most of the disk space PS1 games used tended to be FMVs and music.

The texture cache size and RAM data transfer were vastly more limiting issues that contributed to why stuff often has low detail textures stretched over large things.

Crash is just like any Gen 4 mascot platformer, Nintendo still makes these. Gen 4 is when modern gaming really took off with its abundance of jarpigs and gradually killing their arcade roots in their plarformers. Sega Rally, Ace Combat, or Panzer Dragon are infinitely more retro than shit like Zoomer Shitroid or Chrono Nigger.
