I remember Knight Online. It was already a "Freemium" game - you could buy items increasing XP gain and other useful things, a premium account that gave you many benefits and of course it became unplayable once it was literally invaded by Turks. It was an European server that went from fun and playable to completely unplayable as Turks only formed parties among themselves as they didn't speak English. Even the main site had Turkish as a main language alongside English.
Too bad, as it was quite a weird game but fun in its own way, but you could only, realistically, advance if you had a guild with party members that actually played the game. Most people got bored quickly, though. Too bad.
Next shitmmo I played before WoW was Mu Online. A Korean hack n slash married to a mmo environment. Lots of bling, shining items after crossing certain level (of the item), +7 for starters. If you had a full set of+11 items you looked like a God (there were even wings available from, like, 180 level. I tell you what, it was very hard to level up after reaching around 30 level.
So, a lot of private servers sprang up and THIS is where you could actually play the game and discover all the systems and locations it had. I used a forum called Ragezone, where people could advertise their private servers for EVERY MMO that existed - so Lineage, Mu Online, etc.
It changed its name later on and I don't know what became of it.
