I had this extremely fat neighbor kid whose house I would go to so I could play his Genesis. I hesitate to call him a friend because we basically just used each other's game systems (I had a SNES).
Anyway he was the quintessential fat kid with divorced parents. He got all kinds of cool shit and would just sit back in his room all day and eat pizza rolls and drink Cherry Coke while gaming. He wouldn't let me play games unless he was eating and he'd always hand the controller to me and it would be covered in pizza grease. Slippery. It was a gross sensation and Genesis controllers always trigger a slight nausea in me because of that.

Whenever I had friends over they assumed were were rich or well off because we never had a third party controllers, and had a nice surround sound setup for games and movies. My father was familiar with video games and never bought any that wasn't official. Now that I'm old I've kept this mentality, but still buy hori controllers. Those bastards are great.

neighbor kids who would fight over petty shit every day, loudly wrestling with each other threatening to kill each other over a piece of candy, or if someone farted in their room. their poor mom having to come in and tardwrangle them constantly. i'd just want to play some vidya, and they pretty much ruined it every time. the mom would just kind of give me the look to go home, and i'd peace out.

That exchange always triggered the fuck out of my autism what with how it portrayed kids in the late 90's as obsessed with whether someone "had Nintendo," as if the SNES hadn't yet come out or any Nintendo console would do. Yeah, his dad got him a SNES, which pissed me off because he constantly shit talked to me about how lame he thought the SNES was. He has a Game Boy and Game Gear at his mom's. He got a PS1 and an N64 too later on.

This drove my own mother nuts as she considered it a waste of money and would never let me rent games for his Genesis which drove ME crazy because I wanted to play Gunstar Heroes on it when he'd just rent shit like Shaq Fu or Blades of Vengeance.
