Legitimately, I believe a lot of the potential creative energy to invent new concepts in the fantasy genre has been funneled into inserting diversity. The current zeitgeist is that diversity is the ultimate good, therefore the fundamental evil is lack of diversity, therefore everything can be improved with more diversity, therefore bothering with anything else is pointless so only try to improve things with more diversity.
People who don't want to reinvent things will just replicate past tropes. Even people who want something new, some of the time, will (if a creator) add a black person or (if a consumer) see a gay person and be lulled into thinking their 'european fantasy with Tolkien-derived races but with modern sensibilities and a cash economy' is now fresh and new.
To be clear, I'm basically a grognard who will violently argue there has never yet been an actual "Generic Tolkien-style fantasy game".
