This is completely made up. A very small amount of JRPGs do this, much smaller than the amount of games that don't. Final Fantasy 2 (1988) had a male healer and a female pirate. Dragon Quest 3 (1988) lets both gender be any class. Fire Emblem (1990) has 4 male healers and 3 female healers, and more warrior-type women than mage-type women. All those series have been full of male mages, including some nerdy ones and some non-nerdy ones. You are chasing shadows of your own imagination.

I liked this game well enough. I replayed it a few years ago after beating it when I was 13, and I thought it held up well enough. The characters are very cute, I like they're a tight-nit group of friends who care about each other. Being unable to reach regions mid and late game and the plot ending without resolution bothered me though.
I never played the OG two though, they're back in my backlog and heard they were nice
